Blended Learning Why blended learning? Accommodate learning styles Maximize face-to-face time Experiences not possible in the classroom Instructor and learners maintain connections beyond official class time
Blended Learning Increasingly being used in K-12 for same reasons Cost savings? Adjunct instructors, teacher aides Replicable and repeatable Expectation as undergrads?

MOOCs What is a MOOC? Who is using them and why? How to MOOC? How can small institutions use MOOCs? Free MOOC Offer FAQs
Massive Open Online Courses MOOCs University of Manitoba, Athabasca University MOOC coined name and early experiences Lots of big names: Coursera (Stanford, UPenn, Princeton, UMichigan) edx (MIT, Harvard, CalBerkeley, UTexas, Wellesley, Georgetown) Udacity (Stanford faculty origins, corporate collaborators, San Jose State University) Some small names: Edvance360 (Holy Apostles College & Seminary)
3 Benefits of a MOOC are: (1) Partnership and collaborations, (2) Personal learning goals, and (3) Network building. OnlineCollege.org Massive open online courses appear to be a way for colleges to broaden their appeal and stand out among other institutions. Chronicle of Higher Education This tremendous jump in professional productivity is the most significant advance in the pedagogic part of higher education in a millennium. Forbes forbesleadershipforum/2013/03/12/thereal-winners-of-the-coming-revolution-inhigher-education/ Why MOOC?
from the MOOC Guide moocguide.wikispaces.com 12 benefits of a MOOC You can organize a MOOC in any setting that has connectivity (which can include the Web, but also local connections via Wi-Fi e.g.) You can organize it in any language you like (taking into account the main language of your target audience) You can use any online tools that are relevant to your target region or that are already being used by the participants You can move beyond time zones and physical boundaries
from the MOOC Guide moocguide.wikispaces.com 12 benefits of a MOOC It can be organized as quickly as you can inform the participants (which makes it a powerful format for priority learning in e.g. aid relief) Contextualized content can be shared by all Learning happens in a more informal setting, at a place of your convenience and often around your own schedule. Learning can also happen incidentally thanks to the unknown knowledge that pops up as the course participants start to exchange notes on the course s study
from the MOOC Guide moocguide.wikispaces.com 12 benefits of a MOOC You can connect across disciplines and corporate/ institutional walls You don t need a degree to follow the course, only the willingness to learn (at high speed) You add to your own personal learning environment and/or network by participating in a MOOC You will improve your lifelong learning skills, for participating in a MOOC forces you to think about your own learning and knowledge absorption
from the MOOC Guide moocguide.wikispaces.com Possible challenges of a MOOC It feels chaotic as participants create their own content It demands digital literacy It demands time and effort from the participants It is organic, which means the course will take on its own trajectory (you have got to let go) As a participant, you need to be able to selfregulate your learning and possibly give yourself a learning goal to achieve
Content Crowd-Sourcing Automated and individualized feedback Quizzes Discussion Boards and Chats Content Video and Audio Lectures PowerPoint Presentations Links to Websites and Lecture notes
Connectivist Design Principles Aggregation. The whole point of a connectivist MOOC is to provide a starting point for a massive amount of content to be produced in different places online, which is later aggregated as a newsletter or a web page accessible to participants on a regular basis. This is in contrast to traditional courses, where the content is prepared ahead of time. The second principle is remixing, that is, associating materials created within the course with each other and with materials elsewhere.
Connectivist Design Principles Re-purposing of aggregated and remixed materials to suit the goals of each participant. Feeding forward, sharing of re-purposed ideas and content with other participants and the rest of the world.
What can MOOCS do for small colleges? Increase awareness of institution among target audience Experiment with online teaching and test new technology Expand reach of institution s mission globally Holy Apostles College & Seminary MOOC approach: Smaller class sections for increased interaction Engaging moderator to increase retention Integration of multiple course tools Content developed by experts and enhance with technology from LMS
How to Set Up a MOOC 1. Identify an audience 2. Prepare a topic and identify a facilitator 3. Develop a website to give away the material and a learning management site to host the learning community 4. Develop a registration method Advertise your MOOC and begin accepting registrations
Approach Smaller course sections to increase student engagement Content developed by experts in their discipline Technology enhanced course design Engaging course moderator
