ONLINE doesn t mean LEFT ALONE Klaus Woelk woelk@mst.edu Chemistry Department, Missouri S&T Missouri Learning Commons Scholar

Online Education a thread to traditional universities and colleges? Online Universities University of Phoenix Kaplan University Walden University Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) Kahn Academy, Coursera, Udacity, MITx, edx ed2go, Stanford Online,

Seven Principles for Good Practice in Undergraduate Education Principle 1: Encourage Student-Faculty Contact Frequent student-faculty contact is a key factor in student motivation, involvement, and learning. Faculty concern helps students get through rough times and continue to strive for success. Devise methods that actively and successfully promote studentfaculty contact with both individual students and larger groups of students.

Why redesign a course? Why use more online material in traditional courses? Improve student learning in changing environments online society millennium students No Child Left Behind generation Save money in times of budget constraints same work done with less faculty or with less expensive instructional personnel more students per section

Missouri Course Redesign Initiative ( ) The Governor of Missouri and Missouri s public four-year institutions established a major course redesign initiative to achieve improvements in learning outcomes as well as reductions in instructional costs by redesigning large-enrollment, multi-section courses using technology-supported active learning strategies. Missouri S&T participates in this redesign initiative with its General Chemistry I course (CHEM 1). Characteristics of CHEM 1: First in a sequence of two general-chemistry courses Annual enrollment exceeds 1,000 students Required lecture-and-recitation course (4 credit hours) for more than 75% of S&T s students General-chemistry education to both major and non-major students. Students typically enroll during their freshman year Generates the most student credit hours in a single S&T course.

Student Comments The use of clicker questions and the live text feed help me pay attention in class Strength: explaining the material without giving the answers out right Strength: Getting the class involved in discussions during lecture He really emphasized learning and helped us find out the answer ourselves instead of giving us all the answers Dr. Woelk made me realize the importance of working with others to complete assignments and study for tests, a skill I plan to use for the rest of my time here at Missouri S&T.
