WHAT IS A HOME HEALTH AIDE (HHA)? Home Healh Aides (HHAs) primarily ake care of people in he places where hey live. This care allows people o say in heir own homes, which many older people and heir families like. HHAs help cliens wih aciviies like geing dressed, bahing, using he oile and making meals. They may also help wih laundry, changing linens, vacuuming and washing he dishes. Under he supervision of nurses, hey check he clien s hear rae, blood pressure, breahing and emperaure. Mos HHAs work for licensed home care agencies. These agencies coordinae basic healh and personal care services for heir cliens, who are usually elderly people or people wih disabiliies who live a home. These agencies assign each HHA o care for one or more cliens. WHAT KIND OF PAY AND HOURS ARE INVOLVED IN THIS TYPE OF WORK? Home healh aides migh work full-ime or parime. People wih more experience and people who work for larger, sable agencies wih a big clien base ofen work more hours. HHAs may work shor shifs, longer shifs, or a combinaion. Work is mosly in he mornings and evenings. They work on weekends. HHAs may have o ravel around he Ciy. Pay for HHAs in NYC is a leas $10/hour and HHAs are eniled o paid leave and employersponsored benefis (like healh insurance). Some agencies may pay more. In NYC, mos home healh aides are covered by union agreemens, which can ofen mean beer pay or oher benefis. HOW CAN I BECOME A HOME HEALTH AIDE? In order o ge a job, you mus have a Home Healh Aide cerificae. To obain his cerificae, you mus complee a New York Sae-approved raining program, which akes a leas 75 hours and includes 16 hours in a home-like seing where you will be observed. You mus show ha you can carry ou he required asks before becoming cerified. Courses are offered direcly by home care agencies, hrough CUNY, and by privae raining schools. People in hese jobs operae special imaging (or sonography ) equipmen on paiens. Sonography equipmen shows images of inernal pars of he human body, such as he hear, somach, brain and he female reproducive sysem. Many employers require people in hese jobs o have official credenials, like a cerificae or a degree from an accredied program. CERTIFIED NURSING ASSISTANT (CNA) CNAs help paiens wih heir basic healh and hygiene needs. The asks are similar o Home Healh Aides, bu CNAs usually work in hospials, nursing homes and oher long-erm care faciliies and in healh clinics, raher han in he paien s home. CNAs mus have a CNA cerificaion. DIRECT SUPPORT PROFESSIONAL (DSP) DSPs work mainly wih people wih disabiliies, usually people wih developmenal disabiliies. Alhough he duies are similar o HHAs, hese cliens usually require more inensive and specialized care beyond wha HHAs ypically provide. DSPs mosly work for communiy agencies ha boh operae group homes and provide services o people wih disabiliies in heir homes and a heir workplaces.
