Chronic sress is ofen made worse by crises: unforeseen evens ha can cach sudens off guard. As members of he Carleon Universiy communiy, we all have concern for he wellbeing of our sudens. We also have a role o play in idenifying sudens who are in disress. Suden Success Programs a Carleon Bounce Back Program FIT: Acion The Bounce Back Program is designed o provide suppor and encouragemen o firs-year sudens sruggling academically. I is a suppor program ha idenifies firsyear undergraduae sudens who received an average of less han 60% (GPA of less han 4.0) in heir firs semeser a Carleon. Wih he help of he Regisrar s Office, hese sudens are conaced via and invied o ake par in his program. Those who opin are parnered wih an upper-year faciliaor who works individually wih each paricipan o help hem idenify he source(s) of heir academic hardship in he fall semeser and se new goals and idenify sraegies o achieve hose goals over he course of he winer semeser. carleon.ca/seo/bounceback The From Inenion o Acion (FIT: Acion) Program helps undergraduae as well as graduae sudens learn o beer manage heir sress and improve heir academic performance. The FIT: Acion program provides one-on-one suppor, in he form of weekly meeings, wih a program saff member who will help craf an individual plan for managing sress and geing back on rack. The mos common ways we help are: ime managemen, sress managemen, coping skills, learning sraegies and esaking sraegies. 6 Awards & Financial Aid 202 Roberson Hall carleon.ca/awards The Awards Office is responsible for providing financial suppor, encouragemen, and financial advice o sudens. Our goal is o guide sudens hrough he decision making process so hey may have he appropriae financial suppors in place o successfully achieve heir educaional goals. Scholarships Carleon Universiy recognizes academic achievemen by awarding enrance, incourse and deparmenal scholarships. Sudens enering Carleon Universiy wih an admission average of 80 per cen or beer will auomaically be considered for one of our enrance scholarships. Our highes awards are our 25 Presige Scholarships ha require an admission average of 90 per cen or beer as well as a review of he suden s communiy or secondary school aciviies. Sudens wih an A- sanding who have no been awarded a renewable enrance scholarship, will auomaically be awarded an in-course scholarship for he following year. There are also numerous deparmenal scholarships awarded o sudens based on heir academic sanding and year of sudy. An A- sanding (Annual GPA of 10.0) or beer is required o mainain and renew a scholarship. If a renewable scholarship is los in one year, i can be regained in fuure years. Bursaries A bursary is a moneary award ha is graned on he basis of financial need. Work Sudy Program Work Sudy is a financial aid program inended o supplemen he resources of sudens who are in financial need and have limied financial resources by providing par-ime employmen on campus. Sudens mus apply and be approved o paricipae in he Work Sudy Program. Applicaions are available in Augus. Governmen Suden Financial Aid The Awards Office is responsible for adminisering he Onario Suden Assisance Program (osap.gov.on.ca) which is designed o help Onario sudens cover he cos of pos-secondary educaion. These ineres-free loans and grans are inended o supplemen a suden s financial resources. Similar programs exis in all provinces and he Unied Saes and he Awards Office collaboraes wih he oher provinces and he USA o ensure sudens receive heir funds. We offer medical and counselling services and a healh promoion program. Appoinmens are recommended, however sudens wih urgen care needs may walk-in o be assessed beween he hours of 8:30 a.m. and 3:45 p.m. Medical services Our eam of healh professionals provides services o mee he needs of Carleon undergraduae and graduae sudens. If i is a final exam he suden mus fill ou he Regisrar s Office Deferral of Exams Form and ge a medical cerificae from a docor. If you are uncerain of he validiy of a suden s incapaciy or need documenaion of an illness he suden mus be seen while hey are ill. There is a $15.00 charge for medical cerificaes. The following reasons will no necessarily be acceped for a docor s noe/medical cerificae: missed classes/labs excep in exenuaing circumsances; minor illnesses (e.g. colds, flu); pas illnesses ha have been resolved and ha here is no documenaion for; and obvious injuries (e.g. broken bone in a cas). ISSO saff provide a friendly environmen o respond o quesions, hos programs, and work as official represenaives for immigraion advising and UHIP adminisraion. Our aim is o creae global engagemen and inernaional opporuniies for he enire Carleon communiy. We liaise wih sudens, faculy, saff, he Oawa communiy, and inernaional educaion organizaions on behalf of Carleon inernaional suden iniiaives. Services for grad sudens The Inernaional Suden Services Office (ISSO) is dedicaed o serving inernaional and exchange sudens, including graduae sudens, a Carleon. One of ISSO s major iniiaives is he Graduae Suden Menor program, a peer suppor program in which incoming inernaional graduae sudens are parnered wih a peer menor. The menors, who are all graduae sudens a Carleon, help hem learn more abou he universiy and answer heir quesions and concerns even before hey arrive in Oawa. ISSO also offers a range of oher programs and aciviies graduae sudens migh be ineresed in: An Orienaion program for new graduae inernaional sudens; Resources for Carleon sudens ravelling abroad; Academic Suppor and Workshops: Collaboraive workshops are offered in conjuncion wih oher suden services for academic suppor, career planning and culural adjusmen o develop skills for success.

14 Paul Menon Cenre for Sudens wih Disabiliies 500 Universiy Cenre carleon.ca/pmc In accordance wih he Onario Human Righs Code and Carleon Universiy s Human Righs Policies and Procedures (2001), Carleon Universiy is commied o providing access for boh undergraduae and graduae sudens wih disabiliies o is rich variey of educaional opporuniies. The Paul Menon Cenre (PMC) for Sudens wih Disabiliies (PMC) is mandaed o assis in his obligaion, in par by faciliaing he provision of appropriae academic accommodaions. Appropriae accommodaions do no make i easier for sudens wih disabiliies, nor do hey allow hem o bypass essenial requiremens of heir courses. PMC Coordinaors recommend accommodaions only on he basis of evidence from relevan and curren documenaion from qualified professionals, consisen wih provincial and naional sandards. For example, documenaion of a learning disabiliy requires ha a formal psychoeducaional assessmen be conduced by a regisered, licensed psychologis. How he PMC can help you as a faculy member? PMC-recommended accommodaions are iemized on a Leer of Accommodaion, which is sen elecronically o faculy members. Responsibiliy for adminisering exam accommodaions (e.g. providing space, procors, and equipmen) depends on he ype of exam. Accommodaions for formally scheduled exams and CUOL miderm exams are he responsibiliy of Scheduling and Examinaion Services and he Educaional Developmen Cenre respecively. Insrucors mus balance he righs of sudens wih disabiliies wih he crucial need o ensure ha essenial requiremens are me by all sudens who receive a passing grade in heir courses. If an insrucor believes ha PMC-recommended accommodaions hreaen academic inegriy, a formal appeal process is available. This process recognizes ha he insrucor is he exper in he managemen of his/her course, he PMC is he exper in deermining appropriae academic accommodaions, and Equiy Services is he exper on insiuional obligaions under he Onario Human Righs Code. Our programs and services are designed o foser independence by providing sudens wih he decision-making and academic skills hey need o be successful. SASC offers a range of services o mee individual learning needs. Academic Advising The Suden Academic Success Cenre (SASC) is Carleon Universiy s cenralized academic advising service. Academic advisors can help sudens: fully undersand he skills and benefis associaion wih your degree; choose or change degree programs, majors, minors and areas of specializaion/concenraion; undersand academic rules and regulaions; explore any academic difficulies you may be experiencing and develop an Academic Improvemen Plan and sraegy for success; learn how o read your audi and help you ensure you are on he righ pah for success and graduaion; and discover oher suppor resources and personnel on campus, including deparmenal advisors. There is no appoinmen needed. Sudens can drop-in o 302 Tory when i is convenien for hem. How Academic Advisors can help you as a faculy member: The Suden Academic Success Cenre is open 12 monhs of he year for academic advising.
