All of you are destined for greatness, said Cheryl Wills, longtime anchor for NY1 News and special guest at the East Flatbush elementary school. You are descendants of people who did something powerful; people who were the strongest of the strong and bravest of the brave. Wills, who is also an author, has been on television for years and interviewed many icons, including, most recently, Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf at York College in Jamaica, Queens. I knew, from the time I was little, that I wanted to be on television and that I wanted to be an author, Wills told students at the East 53rd Street school. I have accomplished both of those things. The news anchor told the story of finding out her great-great-greatgrandfather, Sandy, was auctioned on the slave block at age 10. That is why I m here, she said. I am here because my ancestors were brought here as slaves and when the Civil War broke out, my grandfather Sandy became a courageous soldier and fought for his freedom from 1863 to She brought two volunteers to the stage, also 10 years old, to give the students a better idea of what her great-great-great-grandfather might have looked like and the trials many African Americans were forced to undergo in the 19th Century. Wills told the assembly, comprised of predominately black and Hispanic children, that their relatives probably went through similar struggles. And they fought thinking of you and imagining a better world for you, the anchorwoman said. They meant for you to be excellent. At the end of her speech, Wills invited a handful of students to share their dreams for the future. Those dreams included the desire to become a zookeeper, an entrepreneur, a dancer and female football player, a doctor, a pediatrician, a teacher, a soccer player and a surgeon. When you speak your dreams, you re putting that energy out into the world, she said. This is what your ancestors demand of you. In addition to Wills inspiring speech, students in each grade who made honor roll were given awards, and the fifth graders showed off their ballroom dancing skills. 3 March 26, 2015 Canarsie Courier 3 It s A Long Road To Recovery For Mill Basin Family As Hurricane Sandy approached Jamaica Bay in 2012, the Cardone family of Mill Basin boarded up their house along the National Drive waterfront and prepared for the worst. While many homes in the area were badly damaged or flooded, somehow their house was spared with virtually nothing damaged. Three years later, the windows are boarded up again this time under different circumstances. Now, the Cardones are fighting to rebuild their home and their lives. On March 9th, at approximately 2:30 p.m., a fire began at a neighbor s house and quickly spread, engulfing the Cardone s home. The four-alarm fire also gutted two houses and damaged the majority of the back and interior of the Cardone s home before firefighters were able to bring it under control. As a veteran of the construction industry, Dominick Cardone had a friend help him inspect the property. They determined the city was wrong in its initial assessment that the property required demolition. Subsequently, they applied for a Stop Work Order. They are now awaiting approval of permits to start the work themselves. The family is now living in a hotel in Bay Ridge until they can move into a temporary house next week. The most important thing right now is to get the kids back into their routine, Dominick said. They re back in school. Janine went back to chemo. My daughter wanted to stop going to softball and my son Peter didn t want to enlist in the Coast Guard like he planned after graduating high school. Everyone needs to continue on their path and move on. Even my wife, with her cancer, needs to continue to fight it and move past it. On October 6, 2014, after having night sweats and other symptoms, Janine Cardone had blood work done and was diagnosed with leukemia. With a clinical trial medication and chemotherapy, her cancer went into remission to the point of a possible stem-cell transplant in October. However, a biopsy showed too much of the cancer had returned. She has returned to chemotherapy and is taking new medicine with a positive outlook of the transplant in the coming weeks. When asked about her future goals, Janine said they are to have the transplant and get well. I have a long road ahead of me. I need to see that my family is settled somewhere while Dominick rebuilds. I want to help them any way I can. We re a close-knit family; we re always together. We were going through so much before the fire. Everyone was so affected by my illness. That was devastating in itself for them. I don t know what condition I will be in when I come out of the transplant health wise. I would love to say I want to find a job and go to work, but I don t know if I ll be able to. Now we re going through this - yet no one is falling apart. Thank God, to the community and friends, to my family for supporting Dominick and I. They really gave us a lot of hope. The Cardone kids, Tommasina, 13, Nicholas, 16, Peter, 17, and Dominick, Jr., 21, are doing what they can to keep their parents on the right path. I m so proud of my boys, said Dominick. They make me feel at ease and my daughter is a spitfire. I am getting used to them giving me pep talks when I used to give them pep talks. They tell me we have our goals to look forward to and need to keep going, and they are right. Seeing my family function and stand on their own two feet is amazing. Tommasina has remained strong on the outside, in front of everybody, said Janine. In reality, once we re behind the door, she s emotionally devastated. She s sad. We see it in her. It s horrible watching her go through this and knowing her mom has cancer. It s too much to be on the mind of a 13-year-old. The rest are handling it fairly well. They want to help out any way they can. They don t want to be apart from us. To aid in the rebuilding, the Cardones will be utilizing funds from Dominick s successful decorative concrete business. Considered a pioneer in the industry, he has created methods of inserting gold designs into concrete for floors, ceilings and architectural accents. Although Janine hasn t worked with Dominick since the pregnancy of her first son, she has thoughts of returning to work when she is well enough. Dominick is looking forward to returning to his home after construction permits are approved by the city to begin clearing out the debris. Once everything is cleared out, he approximates the rebuild will take six to eight months. While the Cardones rebuild, they are in need of donations to offset construction material costs and to purchase clothing and household items. Donations may be made to St. Bernard Church, located at 2055 East 69th Street, between Veterans Avenue and Avenue U, or by visiting Tommasina Cardone helps move charred debris to a truck. Rockaway Parkway was mobbed with teens after a stabbing allegedly took place near Canarsie High School just after 3 p.m. on Thursday, March 19th. Droves of school safety officers tried to keep the peace among students some who were seen running towards the L train station near Conklin Avenue and Rockaway Parkway after a fight broke out that led to a teenager being stabbed near Rockaway Parkway and Avenue J. According to reports, the victim, who is 15 years old, was approached from behind and stabbed in the back. He was taken to Kings County Hospital for his injuries and was listed in stable condition. He is expected to survive. As of press time, no arrests were made. By Dara Mormile It looked like a fireball flew through the house, stated Dominick Cardone. 5 March 26, 2015 Canarsie Courier 5 A month has passed since 20-yearold Brian Gewirtz, an autistic man with diabetes, walked out of his Marine Park home and never returned. Now, the search for him has gained help from the family of Avonte Oquendo, the 14-year-old autistic teen whose remains were found along the East River after a four-month search in Brian Gewirtz' mother Kathleen advises 1010WINS of the search for her son. Gewirtz was last seen on February 17th wearing a maroon and gray striped sweater, blue jeans, tan work boots, and a black jacket with a hood. When he disappeared, he left his medicine and all identification behind. His family says he is verbal and friendly but may get scared and run off if approached by strangers. We have been searching hospitals but we can t get information on their patients due to HIPAA laws, said Brian s mother Kathleen at a press conference that was held on Saturday, March 21st. We re asking anyone who works for hospitals or visits hospitals to keep their eyes out for Brian. If you see someone who looks homeless on the subways, then try to get a look at their face and see if they may be Brian. Over the past month, his family organized search parties across New York City, checking homeless shelters, hospitals, parks, and any other place Brian may have gone. With a search center based out of the 41st Assembly District Democrats Club Office, at Avenue R and Haring Street, Kathy and her husband Steve continue to send out teams of volunteers to update the public through social media. However, despite reports of sightings, his whereabouts remain unknown. Sightings are coming in but a day or two late. They haven t been verified because people aren t taking photos, Kathy continued. We can t say if it s Brian or if it s not. We ll hear something like Yesterday on the bus or Two days ago so it s very difficult. If anyone wants to report a sighting, then we need that person to immediately call 911. Stay a bit away from him but follow him so you can tell 911 where he is. As the search moves into the second month, the Gewirtz have begun raising money for a reward through donations and a GoFundMe account ( The reward currently sits at $2,000. The family hopes to raise the reward to $10,000. Any money received through GoFundMe will be split between the reward and purchasing supplies needed for the search. Excess money will be donated to the Marine Park Jewish Community Council and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. After hearing Brian s story, Avonte s brother Danny Oquendo decided to step in to help find Brian and add another group of volunteers to the search. He also wants to help promote Avonte s Law, which would provide funding for GPS tracking devices. Please, put yourselves in the shoes of these families, Oquendo said. Imagine losing a loved one and having no idea where they are - and no leads. Imagine that feeling you would have after a month. Imagine reaching out to your community and not having people reach back out to help you. So, please, it s imperative that you come out and help your community members when they re down or their loved ones are missing. If you were in that situation, you d want help as well. And, to America, please support Danny Oquendo (left), brother of the late Avonte Oquendo, speaks with Kathleen Gewirtz (right) about search. Avonte s Law for GPS funding for individuals who are at risk of being lost or running away. It would help prevent situations like this and like Avonte s. Please call your congressman to support Avonte s Law. Heather Arabadjas has also joined the team to help find Brian while searching for her father, Philip Arabadjas, as part of a new support network being organized by the Gewirtz Family. Along with her uncle George, Heather has been spreading fliers as much as she can. She hopes connecting with Brian s parents will give a much-needed boost to her search. My father went missing on the evening of February 12th, said Arabadjas. He left his apartment complex with no shoes, a light hooded sweater jacket, and black sweatpants. Continued on page 30 Safety Of New Synagogue Questioned By Residents Homeowners on Avenue X and Ocean Parkway attended Community Board 15 s (CB15) March meeting to voice concerns about a new synagogue being built in their neighborhood. Congregation Mishkan Yerushalayim currently holds prayer sessions inside two trailers at 522 Avenue X and has led religious observances at the location for over 10 years. Now, congregation officials want to demolish a three-story building at 461 Avenue X, owned by synagogue president Steven Israel, to make room for an 8,000 square foot house of worship. Three-story home scheduled to be demolished to make room for new synagogue. The plans call for the use of the property combined with an empty lot next door, which was offered for sale to the congregation. The new structure would be comprised of three stories and a cellar, with a total height of just over 30 feet and will reportedly meet the characteristics of the community. The cellar would be used for a social hall for children and added space for Sabbath service. The main synagogue is slated to be on the first floor. The second floor will be utilized by the women congregants for their prayer area. The Rabbi and a janitor/caretaker will reside in apartments on the third floor. Citing last week s house fire when seven children died in Midwood, Ocean Parkway resident Rosemarie Varone voiced concerns about the safety of the congregation in the new building. The proposed building has a path four feet under the regulated width on the East 4th Street side and no path along the Ocean Parkway side for emergency exit, Varone said. In an emergency, access to the building by the fire department or any other emergency vehicle would be non-existent. Currently, they have over 300 members with membership steadily increasing. The lack of adequate access to this building can lead to a major tragedy and puts the congregation s members in danger. Lack of parking and the possibility of greater traffic congestion along Ocean Parkway and Avenue X were also raised. Under the construction proposals, there would be no parking lot at the synagogue. Our congregation s people are local to the site where we want to create this synagogue, Congregation Mishkan Yerushalayim President Steven Israel said. Everyone lives nearby and is within walking distance of the synagogue. None of them will be driving to the synagogue, especially during the Sabbath observances, when we are unable to drive due to religious restrictions. Despite Israel s assurances, many CB15 members were unconvinced, citing the chances of individuals outside the congregation s membership taking up spaces near the facility and/or double parking for future functions. Attorney and Counselor at Law Alexander Levkovich answered questions about the project and said, The synagogue will have a large front entrance for access to the cellar, first floor and second floor. There will also be a side entrance for access to the Rabbi and janitor residences. Both will be adequately accessible to emergency services, as required by building standards. There will be no school for our children or other things going on during the daytime hours, he continued. So there will be no issues of school buses or other vehicles during the regular daytime hours. The only time we have something during the day is for the Sabbath service, and we are not allowed to drive during that time. Israel and Levkovich s answers seemed to instill enough confidence with the board s Housing Committee, and 11 members approved the project. Many more members voiced disapproval in the final decision, but CB15 passed the project s variance. The next CB15 meeting will be held on April 28th at 7 p.m. in the Kingsborough Community College staff cafeteria. The campus is located at 2001 Oriental Boulevard. For more information, call (718) or BKLCB15@verizon.net. Artist rendering of the front of a new synagogue.

6 6 Canarsie Courier March 26, 2015 A Wake Up Call For The Late And Not-So-Great (?) Mayor de Blasio Telling It Like It Is By Dara Mormile Okay I know if someone s labeled as late and great, you re referring to a person who s passed on someone who s possibly leaving behind a legacy, of sorts, for their amazing character and feats. It s not always implied that if you re late, you re great, but will that label ever be bestowed upon New York s Mayor Bill de Blasio who s notorious for showing up late, if at all, to dozens of events he s scheduled to attend? First, my apologies. It s been a while since I ve covered a slew of evening community meetings. When I DO cover meetings, I m prompt and waiting patiently for civic matters to begin. I wrote a column years ago on how community meetings rarely start on time. If they say it s supposed to start at 7:30 p.m., you can wait from 7:45 until 8 p.m. for a politician to arrive and for everyone to get settled and start talking business. An 8 p.m. meeting? If everyone s seated by exactly 8:15 and an important politician who s making a speech is already present, you re in luck! Yeah, it s frustrating when you re on a newspaper deadline and a Tuesday night civic meeting has potential to last until 10 p.m. but that s part of the job. Starting meetings earlier or on time would be a real treat for those who don t have all night. A lot of politicians are fashionably late especially when a civic organization is waiting for them to arrive so they can begin. I understand if a politician is traveling from another state or even from one meeting to another - and has to be at three or four places in one night. What s the mayor s excuse oh, that s right, he has lots of them, including how tired he was from the night before! Mr. Tardy de Blasio overslept in November 2014 and was late to the memorial service for families who lost loved ones in American Airlines Flight 587. Recently, he was 15 minutes late to the St. Patrick s Day Mass. The poor baby has problems sleeping Isn t taking care of your nocturnal problems..um NOT the public s problems? Let s go back even further this time to address how stubborn he is about attending certain functions most electeds naturally attend. Our fabulous mayor decided he didn t want to pay respects to the late (used in a positive definition) former Bronx Congressman Herman Badillo last year. He also consciously decided not to attend the city s St. Patrick s Day parade because of its exclusion of those who have different sexual preferences. He made himself clear and told the media upfront that he was hired to implement policy and not go to parades. So why should he make an appearance at ANY parade AT ALL? Hey de Blasio, just stay home and don t worry about showing your face! After all, didn t New Yorkers vote for him because they want him involved in everything going on in this city? Is this guy even a team player? Is he just assuming what most people already know that plenty of events don t begin on time anyway, so why get there at a reputable hour? Does he run late simply because he can? I guess he needs his beauty rest after a long night of organizing whatever city things he needs to delegate. If you ask me, he s setting a bad example not only for his children, but also for New Yorkers who voted for him. When it comes to memorials, ceremonies and school events, you CAN T oversleep! What kind of values does a person have if they make excuses all the time? This was the job he was hired to do and if he can t be there to DO IT, why should New Yorkers support him? Come on if I came in to work late every day just because I overslept or didn t get a good night s sleep, my boss would have a serious talk with me. I m sure others, working in high corporate positions, would be fired for not attending company meetings just because they don t want to. Does de Blasio really have a right to be late? Let s get real! The big deal is that things get done and people are respected for DOING THEIR JOB which they can t do efficiently unless they arrive at work ON TIME! It s more than just a professional call what about the fact that those who practice punctuality have to wait on our mayor? We re talking about making thousands of people WAIT. Does this mayor of ours respect those who are waiting for him? Personally, I never made repeated excuses for arriving late to work. Maybe I should have gone in to work an hour late the next day for every hour I was kept waiting at a meeting the night before! Yes! Okay We all know it doesn t work that way! Being on time is part of the work grind, which our almighty mayor doesn t think he has to abide by. Well excuuuuuuuuse me! I m just going to hit the snooze button and skip watching Hizzoner the next time he holds a press conference zzzzzzzzzz. Ridge Abstract Corp. Two cars collided at the intersection of Gerritsen Avenue and Avenue U early Monday morning all because of bad driving habits. According to an eyewitness, a livery driver was traveling southbound in a Toyota Prius on Gerritsen Avenue around 7:50 a.m. when the accident occurred. Apparently, the driver of a gray Toyota, who was traveling northbound on Gerritsen Avenue, attempted to make an illegal left-hand turn onto Avenue U when he rammed into the Prius and damaged the driver s side of the car. The driver of the car service appeared to be very dizzy from the impact of the crash. Photo by R. Rivera

10 10 Canarsie Courier March 26, 2015 Midwood Fire Kills Seven Children The use of a simple hot plate led to the death of seven children last weekend and is reportedly the deadliest fire in New York City in eight years. On Saturday, at 12:23 a.m., the electric hot plate being used by an Orthodox Jewish mother in Midwood to feed her family during the Sabbath malfunctioned and flames ignited in the kitchen. Soon after, the entire Bedford Avenue house, with eight sleeping children and their mother Gale Sassoon, was engulfed by the flames. The father, Gabriel, was at a synagogue attending a conference. As it was Sabbath and the Sassoon family are observant Jewish, he could not be reached right away. In the Jewish faith, followers are not able to use electronics small appliances, like the hot plate used, are an exception from sundown on Friday to sundown on Saturday. Sassoon, who was separated from her children by 15-foot flames, attempted to save her family. Sassoon, unable to reach her children in time, jumped from their second-floor window with her second-oldest daughter, Siporah, 15. Reportedly, neighbors could hear the cries and wails from the Sassoon children who were unable to escape. By the time firefighters who attempted to resuscitate the children retrieved the family, it was too late. Eliane, 16, David, 12, Rivkah, 11, Yeshua, 10, Moshe, 8, Sara, 6 and Yaakob, 5, were all pronounced dead at the scene or upon arrival at Maimonides, Beth Israel and Community hospitals. Sassoon and Siporah were transported to Jacobi and Staten Island University North hospitals, respectively. Both remain in critical condition. Mayor de Blasio paid a visit to the gutted home on Saturday afternoon to take in the devastation. You can literally see what was a home for a large, strong family and now it s wiped out, every room empty, burned and charred, he told the. This is a tragedy that has very few examples to look at. It s so painful, it s so difficult. According to New York Fire Commissioner Daniel A. Nigro, firefighters only found one smoke detector in the entire home. The recovered alarm was in the basement, two floors below the family s bedrooms. Most homes are typically required to have a smoke detector on every floor, especially in old homes like the Sassoons which was 90 years old, according to the Department of Buildings. An investigation into the fire is ongoing. 14 14 By Dara Mormile The 69th Precinct Clergy Council met Monday night to discuss the creation of a domestic violence program that would benefit youngsters in the community. We re looking to hold meetings and workshops once a month in different churches and locations for teenagers who need spiritual guidance, Clergy President Reverend Cecil Moonsam said at the meeting, which took place at the 69th Precinct stationhouse on Foster Avenue. The goal is to have the meetings on a Saturday from 9 or 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. There s a great need for this type of program in Canarsie. All we need to do, with the help of our clergy, is release a mission statement Canarsie Courier March 26, 2015 Clergy Council To Focus On Programs For Youths and proposal about how it s going to operate on a regular basis. With help from Judith Dustin, a representative from the Brooklyn D.A. s office, the Clergy Council hopes the program is successful in deterring youths from a life of violence and gang involvement. Some of our youths have no direction, Dustin said. We want to assist with mentorship and teach kids what domestic violence is because, whether you know it or not, children are often financially abused by their parents, and it s not just physical abuse that they re seeing. Rev. Moonsam said the clergy will continue conducting peace and prayer vigils in Canarsie where violence has occurred. By holding prayer vigils and distributing fliers at high-crime locations, they hope more residents will be aware of what s going on around them. Commanding officer of the 69th Precinct Captain Norman Grandstaff briefly addressed the slashing that occurred last week outside of Canarsie High School. Thank God, the young man will be okay, Captain Grandstaff told the audience. Our school safety agents are always at Canarsie and South Shore high schools making sure dismissal plans go smooth. We increase their presence so kids can get home okay. Grandstaff did not provide details on the post-dismissal incident, only saying it was a fight that escalated and resulted in a 15 or 16-year-old being stabbed near Avenue J and Rockaway Parkway last Thursday afternoon. We re not sure what kind of knife or weapon was used in the attack, he said. Captain Grandstaff also said residents should be vigilant when it comes to seeing kids idling around the community. Last year we had kids working in tandem from Avenue J to Seaview Avenue from East 100th to East 108th streets where they cased different locations. If you see a youngster hanging out somewhere during school hours, ask yourself what s their reason for being there call the police if something doesn t look right or looks suspicious. 15 March 26, 2015 Canarsie Courier 15 Group Homes And New Sewers Planned For District 18 By Linda Steinmuller Over the years, group homes have popped up around the Canarsie area. Another home was recently proposed for Canarsie this time on East 103rd Street - at last week s Community Board (CB18) meeting. The home and repairing water mains on Louisiana Avenue were the main topics of the evening. The Independent Living Association (ILA), under the auspices of the New York State Office for People with Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD), applied to establish an Individualized Residential Alternative (IRA) at 1125 East 103rd Street, between avenues K and L. Arthur Palevsky, Executive Director of ILA, said that the two-family house will accommodate five developmentally disabled adults, ranging from 30 to 55 years old. Presently, the five adults two males and three females live in two apartments above a bagel store on Flatbush Avenue, near Avenue N. Their living conditions were deemed unsafe due to carbon monoxide leaks. The community residence would provide safer conditions, and the house is large enough so each resident would have their own bedroom, Palevsky said of the new Canarsie location. The residents would attend day programs from Monday to Friday. Still focusing on the eastern edge of District 18, a $30 million project for a new storm sewer along Louisiana Avenue is in the pipeline. Representatives from the NYC Department of Design & Construction (DDC) said that the work is scheduled for Fall The project will replace water mains on Louisiana Avenue near The Landings at Fresh Creek a condominium development. The work will cause temporary street closures and parking restrictions, as well as water service interruptions. The DDC assured residents that the sidewalks would not be dug up, and residents would be given 72 hours advance notice for any water service interruptions. A board member from The Landings expressed concern that the project would compromise the structural stability of the stairs at several of the units along Louisiana Avenue. The DEC confirmed that they will underpin (i.e. reinforce) the property if needed, and an elevation survey would be conducted before work begins. The next CB18 meeting will take place on Wednesday, April 15th at 8 p.m. at 1097 Bergen Avenue. Call (718) for more information. Site of proposed community residence at 1125 East 103rd Street. 16 16 Canarsie Courier March 26, 2015 Pratt Area Community Council Tries To Solve Housing Crisis By Tess McRae As housing becomes a bigger and bigger issue in the city, people in the outer boroughs, particularly in Brooklyn, are struggling to find an affordable place to live without leaving the neighborhoods in which they grew up. In order to deter the problem, the Pratt Area Community Council (PACC) held a resource fair at Brooklyn College on Saturday to better inform Brooklyn residents of their options. There is a housing crisis in this city, said Lynn Rutledge, outreach coordinator for the PACC administration and finance department. The crisis is showing in many ways. Tenants are getting pushed out of their homes or they can no longer afford the homes they live in. For people who are trying to stay in their home or looking to buy a home for the first time, we want to show them how to go through the process. Handfuls of people trickled in and out of the fair throughout the day, asking questions, having their credit reports reviewed and meeting with PACC representatives. It s a good opportunity, said Steve, a resident from the Flatlands area who is interested in buying a home. It s information you want to ask, but feel embarrassed to ask and it s helpful. I think everyone wants to own a home of their own, but sometimes you don t think you d be able to. In addition to PACC representatives, corporate and non-profit vendors set up tables and laid out information materials for those interested. Vendors included Habitat for Humanity, Citibank, Department of Housing Preservation and Development, Reserved Realty and National Grid. The city also had representatives on hand to discuss flood insurance. After guests perused the vendor tables, they gathered in a meeting room to hear from a panel of PACC representatives who answered questions and provided insight on the affordable housing problem. PACC started as an economic development group, said Charisse Smith, assistant foreclosure and financial credit counselor. We would purchase homes and sell them for low, affordable housing. In this area especially, there is a lot of gentrification going on. Things are changing and prices are starting to increase. That s why we re here. We help you and direct you to affordable housing. If you or someone you know needs advice in dealing with a bad landlord, raising rent prices, or if you are interested in buying a home for the first time, you can visit the PACC website at pacc.publishpath.com or call their main office at (718) Representatives from different housing organizations help residents. Clergy Council... Operation Ceasefire was another program that was discussed. The initiative would identify gangs, crews and youths who are prone to engage in violence. We get social workers and ex-cons to visit the kids and talk to them we put them on notice and let them know that if they re involved in a shooting, we re going to deal with them in full force. The 69th Precinct Clergy Council s mission is to act as a liaison between the police department, the community and its congregations. They also help in crisis situations and participate in ministry to police officers of the 69th Precinct before their daily tours of duty. House of worship leaders are encouraged to join the Clergy Council by ing 69thclergycouncil@gmail.com. Meetings are scheduled for the fourth Monday of every month. 17 March 26, 2015 Canarsie Courier 17 New Health Clinic Comes To Our Community By Linda Steinmuller What if you could find a doctor s office where you could get a physical, have your heart checked, remove that annoying bunion and have a colonoscopy all under one roof? It would certainly make your life a whole lot easier. You can get all that done - and more - at Multi Specialty Health Clinic, located at 4713 Church Avenue. Dr. Vignendra Ariyarajah known as Dr. Vic, an internist and cardiologist who has several clinics throughout Brooklyn, recently expanded his services to East Flatbush, where he opened his newest clinic last October. His state-of-the-art medical facility is constantly growing. Health services, including gastrointestinal, OBGYN and podiatry, will be available within the coming weeks at the Church Avenue facility, making Multi Specialty Health Clinic a true one-stop shop for all your medical needs. Dr. Vic also plans to open an ambulatory center for outpatient surgery by this summer. Besides top-notch medical care, Dr. Vic offers innovative technology for his cardiology patients. In fact, his clinic is the only one in Brooklyn that offers ECAT (External Cardiac Ambulatory Telemetry). Typically, patients who need their heart monitored either spend time in a hospital for observation or wear a Holter monitor, which records the patient s heartbeats usually for hours. The patient must then return to the doctor for a follow-up. With ECAT, the patient wears a monitor the size of a beeper, which transmits information via a wireless connection - to a cell phone which connects to a satellite and then sends it right to a laptop in Dr. Vic s office. With this modern technology, a patient can be monitored up to 30 days, if necessary. We can monitor you while you are sleeping and you can spend time at home instead of in a hospital. If we see something alarming, we just pick up the phone to call you and take it from there, Dr. Vic told the. The doctor s impressive education and extensive research background equips him to serve Brooklyn s diverse population. He holds degrees from the University of Alberta, the University of Massachusetts, Harvard Medical School, the University of Manitoba and Thomas Jefferson University - and has an astounding 75 research papers under his belt. The cardiologist also holds awards like Young Researcher of the Year from Turkey and Researcher of the Year from the Province of Manitoba. The diverse cultures in Brooklyn present many varied medical problems as different ethnic groups have different genetic issues, Dr. Vic said. My education and research background enables me to deal with these issues as well as new discoveries, practices and guidelines. Medicine is always evolving. Despite his busy schedule, Dr. Vic makes himself available for house visits. If someone had a debilitating stroke or a longtime patient broke their hip and cannot travel, we ll gladly make a house call, he said. As part of their personalized service, all cardiology patients get a follow-up call four times a year from Dr. Vic s right hand and chief operating officer, Paul-Marie Raymond. As Dr. Vic says, Prevention is the best medicine. We only have one life; is yours protected? To make an appointment at Multi Specialty Health Clinic, call (718) or (718) Their office is open Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. They accept walk-ins and same day appointments too. Check out his advertisement on page 13. Multi Specialty Health Clinic provides superior health care for all your medical needs. Dr. Vignendra Ariyarajah

19 March 26, 2015 Canarsie Courier 19 Local Survivor Is On A Mission To Raise Awareness - And Funds For Colon Cancer March is Colon Cancer Awareness Month, and Dan Foster is doing his part to raise awareness about the deadly disease, which will claim approximately 40,000 lives this year. Foster, a Gerritsen Beach resident who survived Superstorm Sandy, battled his own storm when he was diagnosed with colorectal cancer at the age of 46. Now, he s fighting to help others beat cancer. The 19-year cancer survivor has raised $185,000 to date for various cancer organizations. He s also spreading the word about the importance of early detection and cancer screening, which should be done by age 50. Colorectal cancer is 90 percent beatable if detected early, Foster told the. Just because you re 50 and not experiencing any problems doesn t mean you don t need a colonoscopy. The biggest symptom is no symptoms. That s why it s so important to get screened. Foster, who did not consider himself a big doctor person said, Chances are I wouldn t have gone for a colonoscopy at 50, but that decision was made early for him. When he was 46, he suffered terrible stomach cramps while at work one day. A co-worker immediately took him to a doctor. While there, he was rushed to the hospital. After ruling out kidney stones, he visited a urologist and a gastroenterologist, had his first colonoscopy and was diagnosed with Stage I rectal cancer in After undergoing radiation and surgery, Foster was doing well - until 1999, when a blood test and subsequent CAT scan revealed the cancer had metastasized to both lungs. He had surgery on one lung that September and the other in October, followed by six months of intensive chemotherapy to fight the cancer, which was now Stage IV. The Gerritsen Beach native says that one of his biggest gripes with doctors is that many of them don t tell you to get a colonoscopy. It should be automatic once you turn 50. Most people won t go on their own. Those who have a family history of colon cancer should get screened early. I was diagnosed at 46 so my children should be screened 10 years prior to the age I was diagnosed at 36 - since they are at a higher risk, Foster said. He also emphasized the importance for African Americans to get screened. African- American men are screened 25 percent less than Foster with Mount Sinai Beth Israel patient navigator Lizanka Rodriguez at the hospital s Colon Cancer Awareness event. Foster getting ready for a colonoscopy. white men, and African American women are screened 50 percent less than white women. Foster continued, The rate of colon cancer among African Americans is 45 percent higher than whites so screening is recommended by age 45. A tireless spokesman, Foster is passionate about giving hope to others who are experiencing the same struggles he faced and helping them deal with the everyday stress brought on by a cancer diagnosis. As the Brooklyn ambassador for the Colon Cancer Alliance, he is very active in their Buddy Program, a support program for cancer patients. It s important to talk with people who are newly diagnosed. The most difficult part is the depression stage. The first thing that goes through your mind is, How much time do I have? It helps to have someone to talk to. Foster had over 10 buddies and has talked with people as far away as Hawaii. In recognition for his efforts, the Colon Cancer Alliance named him Hero of the Month in His advice to those who have been recently diagnosed with colorectal cancer: Take one day at a time. If yesterday was a bad day, don t look back. There s nothing you can do about yesterday. Tomorrow is not here yet. Just deal with each day. Foster has received numerous awards for his efforts to stamp out cancer and has participated in many fundraisers and awareness events. He s extra busy during March with a slew of events to raise awareness about the disease. March 6th was national Dress in Blue Day. At an event at Brooklyn Borough Hall, Borough President Eric Adams presented a proclamation to Foster, honoring him for his tireless fundraising efforts. Foster presented Adams with a Knock Out Colon Cancer Mug, blue star pin and wristband. He explained the significance of the blue star pin to the. Blue is the color for colon cancer, and the star is in eternal memory of those that lost their lives and in shining hope for a future free of colorectal cancer. He s especially grateful to all his doctors at Mount Sinai Beth Israel - the hospital where he had his surgery and on March 17th, he participated in their annual Colon Cancer Awareness event. The cheerful cancer survivor, who always has a smile on his face, founded Dan s 5K Fun Run/Walk in 2003, an annual event held in Gerritsen Beach that raises money for a different charity each year. In 2012, the Dan Foster Colorectal Cancer Research Fund was created in his honor, and funds raised were used to purchase robotic surgery equipment for Beth Israel Hospital. He s also walked many miles to fight the disease. In 1997, he walked from his church in Gerritsen Beach Resurrection Church to St. Patrick s Cathedral in Manhattan. In June 1999 just months before both lung surgeries Foster made a seven-day trek, known as the Walk of Hope, from the Montauk Lighthouse at the tip of Long Island all the way to St. Patrick s Cathedral, where he was blessed by Cardinal O Connor. He walked a total of 150 miles and raised $22,000 for Circle of Hope. Later in 2002 with decreased lung capacity, Foster held a three-day Cancer Awareness Walk throughout Brooklyn. The tireless organizer, supporter, fundraiser and advocate has been featured in countless publications, was named New Yorker of the Week and was interviewed on radio and news shows. He won t stop fighting to raise awareness - and funds - to knock out colon cancer for good. To learn more about the Colon Cancer Alliance, visit Foster with other advocates inside a giant, inflatable colon. 21 March 26, 2015 By Jason Linetsky Portions of a building in Marine Park deemed the monstrosity of Kimball Street by neighbors and officials may finally come down. For over a decade, the six-level structure, at Kimball Street between avenues U and V, has stood incomplete and is an eyesore to the community. At a recent Marine Park Civic Association (MPCA) meeting, Reeves Eisen, Chief of Staff for Councilman Alan Maisel, reported that the structure is presently surrounded by scaffolding, and it appears crews have begun demolishing the top two floors. Constructed by Kimball Holdings LLC (formerly Kimball Group LLC), the building was originally slated to be four stories high and serve as a medical facility. However, the developer decided to add two more floors to the building without the approval of Community Board 18 (CB18) or a building code variance from the Department of Buildings (DOB). The choice led to dozens of complaints to the DOB from Canarsie Courier 21 Monstrosity In Marine Park Finally Loses Its Top Floors neighbors, CB18, the MPCA and local officials. The project began in 2002 but was left incomplete following complaints and a Stop Work Order (SWO) made by the DOB, which stated the property was at least 20 feet over the zoning height restrictions of the neighborhood. Every time Kimball Holdings fought for a variance to complete the six-floor building, they were turned down by CB18 and the DOB. The DOB then decided to give the developers a chance to remove the sixth floor in December 2006 with a partial SWO, but Kimball Holdings claimed they lacked money for demolition contractors. Six years of property neglect led to many more complaints ranging from debris-strewn walkways to collapsed wooden barriers around the property until the DOB stepped in again. Kimball was ordered to clean the site, repair surrounding barriers and upgrade security to the building. They followed through with those demands but still refused to remove the top floors. Now it appears Kimball Holdings LLC has decided to save their building. It looks like they are finally following through on taking down the top two floors, Eisen told the I noticed the scaffolding up last month but wasn t able to report on it at last month s MPCA meeting. I believe the fight against this building started before Lew Fidler took office - a while before Alan Maisel came in after Lew, took over where Lew left off, and continues to monitor the situation. Former Councilman Lew Fidler said, It's about time. I guess this proves that even the Buildings Department can enforce blatant violations of the law from time to time. We put an enormous amount of effort into making this finally happen. We contacted the Department of Buildings to determine exactly what is going on with the property, stated CB18 District Manager Dorothy Turano. They may not be taking down just the top two floors. They may be taking down the whole building. We are anxious to have this cleared up. It s a project that should never have happened. A representative with Kimball Holdings, who asked to remain anonymous, told the We have no information about the Kimball Street project. Calls to the contractors, C.S. Scott Enterprises Corp, were also unreturned. I m looking forward to this work being completed. It s been an eyesore for far too long, and the owner of the property has an obligation to make things right, Maisel said. CULTURAL ARTS ACADEMY NOW ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR KINDERGARTEN! Mann Junior High School in Bergen Beach, featured three games: Boys varsity, girls varsity and boys junior varsity. Six teams played, but only three won. First up was the boys junior varsity championships between number two seed I.S. 62 and number one seed I.S.14. The game was close from start to finish and came down to the wire as both teams were trading baskets and fouls until the very end. Tons of steals made for an exciting game to watch, but in the end, I.S. 62 came out on top. Rashawn McGhie, a student at I.S. 62, was named MVP. Next up was the girls varsity game between I.S. 383 and W.A. Cunningham, seeded at number two and number one respectively. They won Game three was a Brooklyn classic with two teams, I.S. 66, number six seed, and Roy H. Mann, number one seed, going head to head. At times the game got heated and even resulted in a small fight between the two teams, which was handled quickly by school staff and safety officers. Eyewitnesses at the scene reported that a Nissan Murano, traveling westbound on Avenue L, rear-ended an Infiniti SUV last Friday around noon. Apparently, the collision caused the SUV to hit a pedestrian. Paramedics arrived at the scene and transported the injured man to a nearby hospital for treatment. The accident occurred near the corner of East 99th Street, which is in close proximity to a food pantry that distributes food on Fridays. It s unclear whether the activity near the location may have contributed to the accident. 25 March 26, 2015 Canarsie Courier 25 Search For Autistic Brooklyn Men Continues, Groups Aim To Reduce Wandering By Tess McRae Being the parent of a missing child is an exhausting, overwhelming and painful experience. It often results in countess sleepless nights and the burning desire to have their son or daughter walk through the front door. While any child runaway is tragic, the odds of it happening are rare. This is not the case, however, with autistic children. According to a study by the American Academy of Pediatrics, nearly half of all children with autism will run away and potentially go missing at least once before their 17th birthday. In less than 30 days, two Brooklyn families were rocked with the disappearance of an autistic family member. Brian Gewirtz, a 20-year-old from Marine Park, was last seen on February 17th when he wandered off. Gewirtz, who lives with his mother, father and dog, often spent his days walking around his neighborhood and has a love for the outdoors. It s a living hell that no mother should ever have to go through, Gewirtz mother, Kathleen previously told the Every day I have some kind of breakdown in the morning and again at night. I just want him to come home. In East New York, a family is desperately searching for Joseph Logue, a 21-year-old who wandered off on March 2nd. Both young men are on medication and both men s families are worried about their state of health. Though Gewirtz and Logue s stories are heartbreaking, autistic children bolting or eloping, as it is referred to by psychologists, is commonplace. However, it wasn t until 14-year-old Avonte Oquendo, a non-verbal autistic boy, bolted from his school in Long Island City, Queens, that the public became more aware of the phenomenon. Oquendo s disappearance resulted in a citywide search that ended three months later when his remains washed ashore in Whitestone, Queens. Children with autism go missing under a variety of circumstances, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children s (NCMEC) website reads. They may seek out small or enclosed spaces. They may wander toward places of special interest to them. Or they may try to escape overwhelming stimuli such as sights, sounds, surroundings or activities of others. Common attractions for children with autism include roadways, trains, heavy equipment and bright lights. Water is, by far, the most popular attraction. Because of this, NCMEC recommends first responders and search teams immediately check all nearby bodies of water in an effort to head-off the child. Unfortunately, about a third of wandering autistic children are found dead, many by way of drowning. Even though bolting and wandering are almost unavoidable, there are resources and programs available to parents. The Hebrew Educational Society (H.E.S.) in Canarsie hosts an array of programs for children on the spectrum and offers advice to parents. There isn t one solution, but I think the most important thing is vigilance, said Alana Javors, staff member at the H.E.S. who works in the autism program. You need to know the signs and be able to see when your child is getting antsy, especially when you re in a crowded place. Learn your child. It s important that a parent knows the triggers so they can catch it and prevent bolting or wandering. Though the H.E.S. is not offering parent workshops currently, they do provide afterschool, social groups and Sunday programs for children on the spectrum. Autism Speaks an activist group that worked with Avonte Oquendo s family and is currently working with the Gewirtz family also offers several options to help prevent wandering-related tragedies. These precautions include securing your home, alerting your neighbors and first responders of your child s condition, teaching your child to swim and placing a tracking device or ID bracelet on your child. The idea of using a tracking device has become increasingly popular, especially with politicians. In a piece of legislation called Avonte s Law, Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY) proposed the federal funding of tracking devices for children with autism. Though the bill has yet to be passed by Congress, it has garnered support from many parents of autistic children and autism awareness groups. In this new Congress, I am calling for my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to work with me and help pass Avonte s Law, which will create and fund a program to provide voluntary tracking devices and expand services for children and families who have Autism Spectrum Disorder or other developmental disorders in which wandering is common, Schumer said of the bill. My legislation will help Avonte Oquendo s memory live on, while helping to prevent any more children with autism from going missing. While the legislation is a welcomed improvement, the parents of Gewirtz and Logue must press on in the search for their children.

26 26 Canarsie Courier March 26, 2015 Breukelen Leader Scouting Out Dedicated Youngsters With four Girl Scout troops active at the Breukelen Houses, young women have plenty of opportunities to learn about etiquette while having a good time. Soon, young boys in the community will also have an organization to call their own. Starting April 11th, a pilot program of the Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts will be in full swing. We re going to have volunteers from the NYPD Explorers work with the group of new Boy Scouts, said Girl Scouts leader Vanessa Hughes, who is also the vice president of the Breukelen Tenants Association. Hughes touts the Breukelen Girl Scouts as a distinguished group of young women who have a fun time building character and modesty. We have troops 2101, 2102, 2104 and 2277 hosting formal English tea parties and community breakfasts, Hughes said. We teach them about women s history because a lot of them don t know that many political leaders were involved with the Girl Scouts and that s how they built their professional reputation. The Girl Scouts have been at Breukelen for over 10 years and leaders are looking to add more programming that will help develop a scout s skills. Eventually we want to take them camping and teach them things like archery, boating and outdoor safety, Hughes added. The leader also confessed that cadets and junior troops are approaching a stage in their lives where media age issues need to be addressed. At the same time, completing projects that include giving back to the community remain high priority on the self-discipline list. Hughes said one of the most successful programs was the Pajama Party, which took place in February The Girl Scouts came to the party wearing their pajamas and donated over 60 new pairs of pajamas to St. Vincent s Church. Hughes is also working on a Snack Bag project, where scouts will make nutritious snack packages. The bags will go to children in shelters or latchkey kids who might not have access to healthy food when they come home from school and their parents are not there, the Girl Scout leader said. In order for a girl to become a scout, she has to be six years or older. They don t have to live in the Breukelen Houses, located in the northeast section of Canarsie. Those interested in getting involved in the Girls Scouts can Vanessa Hughes at breukelengirlscouts@aol.com. They also have a Facebook page dedicated to the organization s success. Last weekend, the Gewirtz family took to a crowded Times Square to distribute fliers bearing their son s image. The family hopes that by covering more ground, New Yorkers will be vigilant if they see Brian and tell authorities right away. However, the Gewirtz advise that the public approach Brian with caution, as he might be scared. It s been over a month since Brian, an autistic and diabetic man from Marine Park, went missing. His parents, Kathleen and Steve, have been working tirelessly with volunteers to spread the word about their son. Brian left his home on Coleman Street on February 17th for a morning walk without his ID or cell phone and never returned. Since Brian requires medication, the family hopes he s found refuge at a hospital or some place safe for shelter. The Gewirtz family recently established a GoFundMe page where the public can contribute to the search efforts. They are in desperate need of supplies that will assist with the search efforts. For more information on Brian Gewirtz, go to Facebook and search for Find Brian Gewirtz or FindBrianNow@gmail.com. The senator spoke with the student body and staff members about his experience attending the school, which he graduated from in After walking the hallways he once scurried up and down as a student, Schumer discussed his time as a public servant and conveyed the importance of serving the community. Schumer was born to Selma and Abraham Schumer in Sheepshead Bay and attended public schools throughout his primary education. While at Madison High School, he scored a perfect 1600 on the SAT and was valedictorian before attending Harvard College where he developed an interest in politics. 28 28 Canarsie Courier March 26, 2015 MEDICAL UPDATE Improved Method For Attributing Nocturnal Grinding Foodborne Illness Developed It is usually estimated that one in 20 The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the USDA s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) have developed an improved method for analyzing outbreak data to determine which foods are responsible for illnesses related to four major foodborne bacteria. The three agencies recently released a report on the new method. The report, titled Foodborne Illness Source Attribution Estimates for, O157 ( O157), using Outbreak Surveillance Data, was produced by the Interagency Food Safety Analytics Collaboration (IFSAC). A partnership of the three agencies, IFSAC focuses on foodborne illness source attribution, which is the process of estimating the most common food sources responsible for specific foodborne illnesses. The report briefly summarizes IFSAC s methods and results, including estimated attribution percentages for the four pathogens named in its title. CDC estimates that, together, these four pathogens cause 1.9 million cases of foodborne illness in the United States each year. The agencies anticipate that IFSAC s work will enhance their efforts to prevent foodborne illness. The new estimates, combined with other data, may shape agency priorities and support the development of regulations and performance standards and measures, among other activities. The recently developed method employs new food categories that align with categories used to regulate food products and emphasizes more recent outbreak data. As outlined in the report, IFSAC analyzed data from nearly 1,000 outbreaks that occurred from 1998 to 2012 to assess which categories of foods were most responsible for making people sick with O157, and. IFSAC experts divided food adults and three in 20 children unconsciously grind their teeth at night. It is the sound of bruxism. While the noise may disturb spouses or children, it has a far more distressing effect on the sleeper. Nocturnal grinding can exert into 17 categories for the analysis. The pathogens were chosen because of the frequency or severity of the illnesses they cause, and because targeted interventions can have a significant impact in reducing them. The report presents the methods behind the results and provides details about the amount of uncertainty around the estimates. Some of the findings include: More than 80 percent of O157 illnesses were attributed to beef and vegetable row crops, such as leafy vegetables. illnesses were broadly attributed across food commodities, with 77 percent of illnesses related to seeded vegetables (such as tomatoes), eggs, fruits, chicken, beef, sprouts and pork. Nearly 75 percent of illnesses were attributed to dairy (66 GARY S. RAFAL, D.D.S. thousands of pounds of pressure per square inch on the surfaces of teeth. It can be rough not only on teeth but on the supporting bone, the gums and the jaw joint. For many years, bruxism was attributed to the release of tension from emotional stress. However, many dental authorities today believe that the cause exists in the patient s mouth. Night grinding may be an unconscious effort to correct irregularities on the chewing surfaces of the teeth. Dentists term this a malocclusion. They grind away to eliminate a spot that is too high, or to find a comfortable place to fit the upper and lower teeth together. percent) and chicken (8 percent). Most of the dairy outbreaks used in the analysis were related to raw milk or cheese produced from raw milk, such as unpasteurized queso fresco. More than 80 percent of illnesses were attributed to fruit (50 percent) and dairy (31 percent). Data were sparse for, and the estimate for fruit reflects the impact of a single large outbreak linked to cantaloupes in Due to limitations in outbreak data and uncertainty in the estimates, IFSAC recommends caution in interpreting certain findings, such as the estimates for in dairy and in fruits. IFSAC suggests that the results be used with other scientific data for risk-based decision making.

29 March 26, 2015 Canarsie Courier 29 MEDICAL UPDATE Are You Considering Psychotherapy? Usually people consider psychotherapy as a vehicle for relieving the distress of emotional upset and illness. Sometimes a person s physician will recommend psychotherapy because he or she believes the patient s discomfort is predominantly psychological. Less fortunate people sometimes run from one doctor to another seeking the one medication that will end their misery. It s safe to say that people consider psychotherapy as a form of treatment when they experience unbearably distressing emotional symptoms that cause them much physical pain. Psychotherapists recognize that the problem which disturbs the person is in some way related either to past developmental or learning difficulties, or to present-day environmental conditions which tax the individual s coping capacity to a point beyond which one can effectively tolerate. Psychotherapists believe that through the therapy experience, which is a new learning experience, an individual can avail him or herself of alternatives toward a better way of adapting to life. The patient s and the therapist s immediate goal is to achieve some relief from the existing symptoms causing the excess stress. Relief can sometimes be affected through short-term treatment. Once this is accomplished, the person may desire to re-assess his or her goals so that he or she can learn how to better cope with the continuing hardships of life. Longterm therapy is more in-depth and focused on maximizing the individual s creative capacity. The work of long-term therapy requires the individual to learn all one can about one s behavior and the underlying feelings that shape his or her personality and make up one s character structure. Regardless of the type of therapy selected, growth and greater self-realization are always the by-products. Advertise Your Next Health Fair In The Canarsie Courier! Call For More Information

30 30 Canarsie Courier March 26, 2015 Anti-Violence Initiative Headquarters Now Open Gangstas Making Astronomical Community Changes, Inc. (G.M.A.C.C.), a violence interrupter group in East Flatbush, celebrated the opening of their new headquarters last week. Councilman Jumaane Williams, deputy leader and co-chairman of the City Council s Task Force to Combat Gun Violence, joined G.M.A.C.C. founder Shanduke McPhatter and Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams in front of the new facility, located at 5712 Church Avenue. G.M.A.C.C. is a community-based organization with a mission to change the lives of individuals who are at risk or are currently being absorbed by street life. McPhatter and the G.M.A.C.C. group felt the East Flatbush location will effectively target and service high-risk zones to provide the resources and solutions to the various issues affecting the community. McPhatter, son of a single mother, has first-hand experience with street life. When he was 16 years old, he was incarcerated at Rikers Island and shortly after joined the Bloods. McPhatter spent the next 15 years of his life living a life of crime and violence. It wasn t until a 23-hour stint in the special housing unit in an upstate prison that McPhatter realized the system wasn t going to change him. Eventually, he found a stable job and began raising his twin sons before forming G.M.A.C.C. The headquarters, working in cooperation with the 67th Precinct, will also partner with East Flatbush Village, Inc., Opportunity for a Better Tomorrow, Sesame Flyers and the Legal Aid Society. "This year, let's not accept as fact that just because we are approaching warmer months that gun violence has to increase. It doesn't," said Williams. "I am proud to stand with our anti-violence advocates to welcome G.M.A.C.C to our neighborhood during today's ribbon-cutting ceremony. G.M.A.C.C. has been working as credible messengers to reduce violence and shootings among youth in our community and will now have more resources to fulfill their mission. I look forward to partnering with Shanduke and all violence interrupter groups in the 67th precinct to make this summer one of the safest our community has seen in years. This $15 million initiative, funded jointly by the de Blasio administration and the City Council, expands the cure violence system and includes: Expansion and addition of "wrap around," community-based preventive services, such as job training, mental health and legal services, which will increase the likelihood of long-term violence reduction. Establishment of school-based conflict mediation and anti-violence programs, including the Match program, which provides daily tutoring in Algebra to high school students, and which randomcontrol trials have demonstrated reduction in violence by 44 percent - while improving academic performance by three grades. Establishment of an anti-violence program training academy to train neighborhood-based anti-gun violence providers to ensure consistency and fidelity to the effective models of community based anti-violence work. Development of community messaging and educational materials to reinforce community norms against gun violence, similar to successful campaigns promoting seat belt use and against smoking. Betty was a wonderful person with a heart of gold and was loved by all who knew her. Betty was born here in Canarsie and lived most of her life on East 92nd Street and also on Avenue L. She attended P.S. 114 in the 1920's and also Holy Family Church in both it's original and present location. She knew a Canarsie that most of us have only heard of. She was pre-deceased by all of her siblings, brothers Harry and Joseph Locke and sisters Frances Locke, Catherine Davenport, Sue Mansey and Patricia Henaghan. As Betty got older, we would always tell her that if Rose Kennedy could live to 105, that she could live to 100, and we honestly thought she was going to make it. She was 89 and doing wonderfully, then on September 20th she was diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer and in one month was gone. With her, passed a precious part of"little Old Canarsie", and for us, her family, went a piece of our hearts. Have a wonderful 100th birthday in Heaven Aunt Betty. Let s have a deeper understanding of this healing sacrament. It is not Last Rites, at the moment of death. As Jesus ministered to the sick, so does the Church. It is for anyone who is seriously sick. So it is intended for those with an ongoing condition (Cancer, Sickle cell, Asthma etc.) those who are going into hospital during the month for an operation, elderly whose health is slipping and for those with a mental illness like depression. We are The Village Church in the Big City! Do you ever weary of our urban environment, and the often impersonal flavor of life in New York City? Come and experience Christian community in a congregation where everyone knows your name. We follow the traditional liturgy, with hymns and songs both old and new. A brief children s sermon is offered every Sunday, along with preaching based on the Bible readings appointed for that Sunday. Sunday school, for kids of all ages, begins about 12:30. We proclaim and celebrate the gift of salvation through faith in Christ alone. We gather for worship on Sunday mornings at 11:15, at 1187 East 92nd Street in Canarsie that s right off of Flatlands Avenue, between Flatlands and Avenue J. Call Pastor Christoph Schulze at (718) for information on Sunday School, Friday night youth group, Courageous Dads men s group, Sunday and Saturday Bible studies, and receiving God s priceless gifts of Holy Baptism and Holy Communion. The sanctuary is open each Tuesday night at 7 p.m. for prayer. Each Sunday at 9 a.m. there is a service in the French language, led by Pastor Jean Cenat, who shepherds our French-speaking Lutheran congregation. Please call (718) to leave a message for Pastor Cenat. Saturdays at 3 p.m., Into The Garden (an eleventh-step group of Alcoholics Anonymous, or A.A.) meets downstairs in our church building. The only requirement for membership in A.A. is a desire to stop drinking. Our congregation also hosts a full-time, Christian day school: Great Commission Christian School. The focus of our school is on forming disciples of Jesus Christ who will be well prepared to meet the challenges and opportunities the world will offer them. For information on enrolling your 1st through 6th grader, please call Mrs. Rhonda Schulters, the Principal, at (718) Come, join us for worship at St. Matthew s... and be assured that you will receive a warm welcome at The Village Church in the Big City.

The next graph says 79 seats need to be eliminated in District 18, 4,295 in District 22 Dear Dara (it s okay if I call you that, right?): From this point on, I will not try to be satirical like your column. (BTW, if you really wanted to be closer to unique, you should ve called the column Telling It As It Is, which would be better English too...) What was really disconcerting was reading your response to Ms. Reiner s letter, which, as a longtime resident, I agree with except for one thing, which is and so I have trouble believing you had written it. Namely, this:...have the least amount of restaurants... Doesn t something sound wrong here? Are restaurants measured or counted? If the latter, which is of course the case, then it is the fewest number of restaurants. [SOY! - Shame On You for this gibberish, which I assume you d want to distance yourself from completely.] With regards to Mr. Friedman s letter, I think you should have edited something in it, namely the name Ghandi, which of course is spelled. (Oh, please don t tell him I wrote this as he (still) might try to track me down...) More Grammar Gripes and 400 in District 19. In fact, these are the number of new seats that need to be in order to eliminate current overcrowding in these districts. And just to be clear, the enrollment and capacity numbers we used for each school building in the districts came from the education department. Doug Turetsky Chief of Staff/Communications Director NYC Independent Budget Office Finally, I thought this issue of the would be a tipping point as Mr. Linetsky s second article on Page 3 (I was surely glad to read about the great money support for the family in the first) had the following in the fifth paragraph:... between Avenues U and V,... Unfortunately, on Page 8 we find... between avenues I and J,... Anyway, keep up the good work except for that least amount of [plural] nonsense. [As I sometimes tell others who rarely write but make the error also (besides how dumb it sounds), it is number of words, amount of reading; number of coins, amount of money; number of slices, amount of pizza.
