2 Accents on a Mac Op-on 2: Select the French keyboard (le8ers will move around). To Ac&vate Keyboard Go to the Apple menu and open Systems Preferences. Click the Interna&onal icon on the first row of the Systems Preferences panel. Click the Input Menu tab and check the keyboards you want ac-vated. Note: If you do not see the keyboard you need to ac-vate, you may need to install them from an OS X CD or download the most recent version of OS X from Apple. Make sure the appropriate Localized Files are checked during the installa-on set up wizard. Switch Keyboards Make sure you have ac-vated all the appropriate keyboards following the instruc-ons in the previous sec-on. Open a sokware applica-on such as a word processor, spread sheet or any other applica-on in which you need to enter text. On the upper right por-on of the screen, click on the American flag icon (). Use the dropdown menu to select the Extended Keyboard (). The keyboard will be switched and an appropriate font will be selected within the applica-on. A flag icon corresponding to the keyboard will be displayed on the upper right. To switch back to the U.S. keyboard or to some other keyboard, click on the flag icon on the upper right and select a keyboard from the dropdown menu.

4 Accents on a PC Op-on 2: As for the Mac, it will be easier to load an alternate keyboard. Use either the US Interna-onal or French keyboards. Windows 7 or Windows Vista Click Start Collapse this imageexpand this image, type intl.cpl in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER. On the Keyboards and Language tab, click Change keyboards. Click Add. Expand the language that you want. For example, English (United States). Expand Keyboard list, select the United States Interna&onal check box, and then click OK. In the Default input language list, click Language name United States Interna&onal (where Language name is the language that you selected in step 4), and then click OK two -mes. In the Regional and Language Op&ons dialog box, click OK. No-ce that the Language bar appears on the taskbar. When you posi-on the mouse pointer over it, a ToolTip appears that describes the ac-ve keyboard layout. Click the Language bar, and then click United States Interna&onal on the shortcut menu that appears. Windows XP Click Start, type intl.cpl in the Run box, and then press ENTER. On the Languages tab, click Details. Under Installed services, click Add. In the Input language list, click the language that you want. For example, English (United States). In the Keyboard layout/ime list, click United States Interna&onal, and then click OK. In the Select one of the installed input languages to use when you start your computer list, click Language name United States Interna&onal (where Language name is the language that you selected in step 6), and then click OK. 5 Note: You can also use the character map in both PC and Mac. For Windows, click on the Windows Start menu, then All Programs (Start» All Programs) on the lower lek of your screen. Select Programs» Accessories» System Tools» Character Map. VISTA USERS: Click the Accessories folder, then the System Tools folder to access contents. ALTERNATE LOCATION: On some PC's, the Character Map may be in another loca-on under Accessories or the Start menu. TIP: If you use the Character Map a lot, you may want to make a Shortcut (alias) to it on your Desktop or add it to your Start menu. A window should open which displays a series of characters in a grid.

6 For Macs, Add Character Pale8e access to your menu bar, so you can access it when you re working in other applica-ons (like Microsok Word or Adobe InDesign). You do this by going to the System Preferences in the Apple menu, under Interna-onal, and clicking on the Input Menu tab. Turn on the checkbox for Character Pale8e and it will appear in the menu bar along the right side.
