5 The initiative - Objectives 5 General Objectives q Focus on Institutional & national priorities to adress the local needs Provide valuable information services for Research, Management and Decision-Making of marine resources and coastal areas from the institional level Specific Objectives Identify, organize, Preserve intitutional outputs Enable web publishing of local information resources throught institutional platform
6 Why Institutional Products? Access to local resources have been a Major constraints of many Intitutions in Africa Since several years some marine and aquatics libraries are building tools to provide better access to these kind of informations resources Most of informations systems are now available at the project level or regional level: ( hosted in IODE server) Oceandocs-Africa AFRILIB However most of product/services s are NOT accessible online from the institutional level
7 Initiative - Process Steps: Selection of the Open Source software Develop capacity at the regional level: Training of Trainers August 2012 Develop capacity at the libary level: Training on software installation of IM by September 2012 Installation the easy to install software as localhost for all libraries from October 2012 Development of all library catalogue and institutional repository from October 2012 Set up the web server (2 libraries as pilot : Kenya March 2013, Senegal September 2013 Review and updating library catalogue & institutional repositories October 2013 Training in alternative open sources solutions Octobre 2013
8 What is Open Source? OS software can be used freely without having to pay license fees to developers Underlying code is made available (commercial software secret). Libraries can change software OS communities & individuals share responsibility for development OS software is highly dependent on users for its development
9 Selection of software Guiding principles Open source software, possibilities to be customised adjustable to specific need Unique platform for multiple use, catalogue and repository Interoperability with existing systems, export-import functions IT support and local technical expertise available Sustainability beyong the funding support

16 Alternatives Solutions proposed Use free reference manager software for stand alone and web based library catalogue & repository Zotero : free and open-source reference management software to manage bibliographic data and related research materials (such as PDF files). Interoperability with AOD (export-import functionalities Mendeley: free reference manager and academic social network that can help you organize your research, collaborate with others online, and discover the latest research. Reference manager for bibliography creation and research papers management.
