5 Honorary Doctor of Technology Mr. Allan Trice Senior Designer, International Submarine Engineering Ltd. The Honorary Doctor of Technology is awarded to individuals who are widely recognized for outstanding and sustained achievements in their areas of expertise. Allan (Al) Trice is Senior Designer with International Submarine Engineering and well established in the high technology subsea industry in Canada. For the past 45 years he has been continuously involved in developing the practice of marine engineering. Al was given his first boat an 8 foot kayak at the age of 8 and at the age of 12 his dad helped him build a 12 foot sail boat which he in turn learned to sail. At 15 they built a 15 foot boat which allowed him to roam the coastal waters of BC. At 18, he built a 22 foot Star sailboat the largest one-design class yacht in the world and raced the boat for the next seven years. He also had a love for planes and won his first model airplane contest at the age of 8 and at that time his dream was to become an aeronautical engineer and design airplanes. By the age of 17 he and some of his friends built a full sized Boeing primary glider. They flew this from Sardis, using a car to tow it and teaching each other how to fly. Shortly after graduating from Vancouver s McGee Secondary School in 1947, he started a one-man company building and selling hand-made dinghies in a space rented from a woodworking shop. In 1951 he started a Shipwright Apprenticeship with the Star Shipyard in Queensborough. It was here that his interests changed from working on water to underwater. The next 11 years involved diving contracts in Western Canada while working on the development of prototype submersibles. Al was hooked on diving and he formed a diving company Carter Brothers Diving Ltd. with friend Keith Carter where they dived to recover bodies, cargoes, sunken boats and assisted the police in uncovering insurance scams with sunken cars. In search of a better way to dive in the late 50 s, he started another company, Hyco - which built manned submersibles which brought high technology together with the subsea industry and put Vancouver on the map as one of the world s centers of excellence in subsea technology. Hyco and Al s legacy is a $300 million dollar BC industry, directly and indirectly involving 100 companies in the province. Wanting to add his photography interests to the underwater scene his first effort was to modify a Han Hass housing to accommodate a wide angle lens on a Leica F1 camera body. He could not find a machine shop willing to do this so he bought a lathe and did it himself. This proved successful and was the start of a financially rewarding side venture. Al is a designer at heart and his list of innovative designs include the Pisces submersible, a modular ship which could be shipped by rail for manned submersible support in Hudson s Bay. He also developed a novel launch and recovery system for underwater vehicles and was involved with the development of the NASA space shuttle booster rocket de-watering system. In the 80 s he became involved with the design and operation of the Remote Operated Vehicles and more advanced Autonomous in the 80 s and 90 s. This required that he make the jump from paper to electronic drawing a step which he achieved at the age of 69. Al s stamp can be seen on many of the vehicle designs and in the several hundred vehicles which have been delivered worldwide. Al is a quiet but strong individual who has made a fundamental contribution to subsea engineering in BC. He has partnered with BC educational institutes to teach young people the basics of underwater technology. He has contributed significantly to numerous high school students on Work Experience Programs, is a long-time supporter of University Co-op programs, both within Canada and internationally. Al s success in life has been due to his unique talent for engineering design and innovative thinking, his dedication to students, his work ethic and the love of what he does. He is highly respected by all who have had the opportunity to work with him. He has been from sky to sea and sea to sky on the highway of life.
