1 Program Website Program Description Program Accreditation Dental Hygiene: Associates Degree Program A series of natural science and general education courses are associated with the Dental Hygiene program at Miami Dade College. It is recommended that students interested in this program complete these general education courses prior to applying and enrolling in the program to reduce the course workload in each semester. Completion of these courses does not guarantee admission to the program. The Dental Hygiene Program prepares its graduates to become members of a dental health team dedicated to helping individuals maintain oral health and prevent disease. The Dental Hygienist is qualified by education and licensure to provide direct patient care prescribed by the dentist, to remove deposits and stains from the teeth, expose and develop dental x-ray films, and perform various other preventative and therapeutic services related to oral health care. The Dental Hygienist educates individuals and groups of patients in proper preventive measures and explains the relationship between diet, smoking, general health and oral health. You are 18 years old and have earned, or will earn at the time of enrollment into the program, a high school diploma or a high school equivalency diploma (GED). 2. If this is your initial enrollment at Miami Dade College or you have not been enrolled at Miami Dade College during the past 12 months, complete the Application Packet available from the Admission Office s on any of the eight MDC Campuses. Choose the Medical Center Campus as the "preferred" campus; be sure to enter "23022" under "Program Code." 3. Register for and take the Computerized Placement Test (CPT) through Testing Services, Room 1303, Medical Center Campus, , or through the testing center at any of the other MDC campuses. You must sign up at least one month in advance of taking the test, and you must take the test before the date that program application materials are due. You must have passing scores on the Computerized Placement Test (CPT), or, if you have taken the test but have not passed, then you must have satisfactorily completed the developmental courses prescribed by

Job prospects are expected to be favorable in most areas, but competition for jobs is likely in some areas. Employment change. Employment of dental hygienists is expected to grow 36 percent through 2018, which is much faster than the average for all occupations. This projected growth ranks dental hygienists among the fastest growing occupations, in response to increasing demand for dental care and more use of hygienists. The demand for dental services will grow because of population growth, older people increasingly retaining more teeth, and a growing emphasis on preventative dental care. To help meet this demand, facilities that provide dental care, particularly dentists' offices, will increasingly employ dental hygienists, often to perform services that have been performed by dentists in the past. Ongoing research indicating a link between oral health and general health also will spur the demand for preventative dental services, which are typically provided by dental hygienists. Job prospects. Job prospects are expected to be favorable in most areas, but will vary by geographical location. Because graduates are permitted to practice only in the State in which they are licensed, hygienists wishing to practice in areas that have an abundance of dental hygiene programs may experience strong competition for jobs.

4 Salary Information Older dentists, who have been less likely to employ dental hygienists, are leaving the occupation and will be replaced by recent graduates, who are more likely to employ one or more hygienists. In addition, as dentists' workloads increase, they are expected to hire more hygienists to perform preventive dental care, such as cleaning, so that they may devote their own time to more complex procedures. Median annual wages of dental hygienists were $66,570 in May The middle 50 percent earned between $55,220 and $78,990. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $44,180, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $91,470. Obtaining Professional Licensure Earnings vary by geographic location, employment setting, and years of experience. Dental hygienists may be paid on an hourly, daily, salary, or commission basis. The written National Dental Hygiene Board Examination is required and offered through the American Dental Association. 7 Sonagraphy: Degree Program Program Website Program Description Program Accreditation Admission Requirements Diagnostic Medical Sonography students learn to obtain diagnostic images; analyze technical information relevant to the scan; and evaluate sonograms for image quality and anatomical abnormalities. Students will spend approximately 1,920 hours in supervised clinical rotations. The program provides learning experiences that enable the student to acquire and assimilate the necessary technical competencies to function effectively as a supportive health care provider in the Diagnostic Medical Sonography profession. Graduates of the program are eligible for the following credentialing examination processes administered by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography: Obstetrics and Gynecology, Abdomen, and Adult Echocardiography. As the population continues to age, there will be an increasing demand for diagnostic imaging. Additional job growth is expected as healthcare providers increasingly utilize ultrasound imaging as a safer and more cost-effective alternative to radiological procedures. Ultrasound imaging technology is expected to evolve rapidly and spawn many new sonography procedures, enabling sonographers to scan and image areas of the body where ultrasound has not traditionally been used. Hospitals will remain the principal employer of diagnostic medical sonographers. However, employment is expected to grow more rapidly in offices of physicians and in medical and diagnostic laboratories. Health care facilities such as these are expected to increase in number because of the strong shift toward outpatient

10 care, encouraged by third-party payers and made possible by technological advances and less expensive ultrasound equipment that permit more procedures to be performed outside of hospitals. Salary Information Obtaining Professional Licensure Job opportunities should be favorable. In addition to job openings from growth, some openings will arise from the need to replace sonographers who retire or leave the occupation permanently. However, job opportunities will vary by geographic area. Sonographers willing to relocate will have the best job opportunities. Sonographers with multiple specialties or multiple credentials also will have good prospects. The median annual wage of diagnostic medical sonographers was $61,980 in May The middle 50 percent of sonographers earned wages between $52,570 and $73,680 a year. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $43,600, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $83,950. Median annual wages of diagnostic medical sonographers in May 2008 were $62,340 in offices of physicians and $61,870 in general medical and surgical hospitals. Licensure is not required in the state of Florida for employment as a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer. However, sonographers may become credentialed by one of the professional credentialing bodies. Most employers prefer to hire registered sonographers because registration provides an objective measure of an individual s professional standing. Completion Requirements The Associate of Science Degree is the completion point of the college credit certificates offered by the Emergency Medical Services Department at the Medical Center Campus. Before entry into the Emergency Medical Services Degree program, students must complete the training as a First Responder, Emergency Medical Technician, and Paramedic. It is highly recommended that students meet with a representative of the Emergency Medical Services Department at the Medical Center Campus prior to enrollment in the Associate Degree. In addition to the program courses, students must also complete a series of general education and natural science courses at Miami Dade College. Completion of these courses does not guarantee admission to the program. Where Do I Send My Program Application Materials? There is no formal program application process for the Associate Degree track. To be eligible for admission to the Associate in Science Degree in Emergency Medical Services, all applicants must come to the Medical Center Campus and meet with a representative of the Emergency Medical Services Department. The Medical Center Campus is located at: Employment Outlook Miami Dade College Medical Center Campus 950 N.W. 20 Street Miami, FL Employment of emergency medical technicians and paramedics is expected to grow 9 percent between 2008 and 2018, which is about as fast as the average for all occupations. Growth in this occupation is due in large part to increasing call volume due to aging population. As a large segment of the population aging members of the baby boom generation becomes more likely to have medical emergencies, demand will increase for EMTs and paramedics. In addition, the time that EMTs and paramedics must spend with each patient is increasing as emergency departments across the country are experiencing overcrowding. As a result, when an ambulance arrives, it takes longer to transfer the patient from the care of the EMTs and paramedics to the staff of the emergency department. In addition, some emergency departments divert ambulances to other hospitals when they are too busy to take on new patients. As a result, ambulances may not be able to go to the nearest hospital, which increases the amount of time spent in transit. Both these factors result in EMTs and paramedics spending more time with each patient, which means more workers are needed to meet demand. In addition, hospitals are increasingly specializing in treating a particular illness or injury. This results in more patients needing to be transferred to the hospital best able to treat them. Most patients must be transferred by ambulance, so their condition can be monitored en route. Therefore, more demand for transfers between hospitals increases the demand for the services of EMTs and paramedics. There also still will be demand for part-time, volunteer EMTs and

16 paramedics in rural areas and smaller metropolitan areas. Job prospects. Job prospects should be favorable. Many job openings will arise from growth and from the need to replace workers who leave the occupation because of the limited potential for advancement, as well as the modest pay and benefits in private-sector jobs. In addition, full-time paid EMTs and paramedics will be needed to replace unpaid volunteers. Emergency medical service agencies find it increasingly difficult to recruit and retain unpaid volunteers because of the amount of training and the large time commitment these positions require. As a result, more paid EMTs and paramedics are needed. Salary Information Obtaining Professional Licensure Competition will be greater for jobs in local government, including fire, police, and independent third-service rescue squad departments that tend to have better salaries and benefits. EMTs and paramedics who have advanced education and certifications should enjoy the most favorable job prospects, as clients and patients demand higher levels of care before arriving at the hospital. Earnings of EMTs and paramedics depend on the employment setting and geographic location of their jobs, as well as their training and experience. In 2008, about 27 percent of EMTs and paramedics belonged to a union or were covered by a union contract. The completion of the Associate in Science degree does not lead to licensure or certification. 37 Nuclear Medicine: Degree program Program Website Program Description Program Accreditation Admission Requirements Nuclear Medicine is the injection or oral administration of radioactive materials into the human body that are detected by an imaging device known as a gamma camera. A scan of the distribution of the radiotracer within an organ in the body is produced. A Nuclear Medicine Technologist prepares and administers the tracer radiopharmaceuticals to the patients and records the images using computerized detection systems. Nuclear Medicine Technologists are employed in hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers, and private physician offices. Employment of nuclear medicine technologists is expected to increase by 16 percent from 2008 to 2018, faster than the average for all occupations. Growth will arise from technological advancement, the development of new nuclear medicine treatments, and an increase in the number of middle-aged and elderly persons, who are the primary users of diagnostic and treatment procedures.

39 Technological innovations may increase the diagnostic uses of nuclear medicine. New nuclear medical imaging technologies, including PET and single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT), are expected to be used increasingly. Cost considerations will affect the speed with which these new applications of nuclear medicine grow. Healthcare facilities contemplating these procedures will have to consider equipment costs, reimbursement policies, and the number of potential users. Although these new imaging technologies will be used more often, they will likely replace older technologies, not supplement them. Thus, only a small amount of job growth will stem from the adoption of new technologies. Salary Information Obtaining Professional Licensure In spite of growth in nuclear medicine, the number of openings into the occupation each year will be relatively low. Job competition will be keen because the supply of properly trained nuclear medicine technologists is expected to exceed the number of job openings for technologists. Technologists who have training in multiple diagnostic methods, such as radiologic technology and diagnostic medical sonography, or in nuclear cardiology, should have the best prospects In this area, entry-level graduates may expect to earn an annual salary of $43,000 if employed full-time in a hospital setting. This does not include a sign-on bonus, benefits or overtime. Graduates are eligible to apply to sit for the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists Examination in Nuclear Medicine as well as the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board Examination. 42 Opticianry: Degree Program Program Website Program Description Program Accreditation The Opticianry Program provides learning experiences that enable the student to acquire and assimilate the necessary technical competencies to function effectively as a supportive health care provider in the Opticianry profession. This program simultaneously prepares students for jobs in three ophthalmic health care areas, as opticians or as technicians working with optometrists or ophthalmologists. A concentrated presentation of career development and clinical experience, combined with general education courses accomplishes this multidisciplinary approach. Among the marketable skills acquired are clinical data collection and ophthalmic fabrication and dispensing. The program prepares students to assist in performing tests to determine defects in vision, preparing and fitting eyeglasses and contact lenses, and administering corrective eye exercises and other treatments under the supervision of an optometrist or ophthalmologist. Middle age is a time when many individuals use corrective lenses for the first time, and elderly persons generally require

45 more vision care than others. As the share of the population in these older age groups increases and as people live longer, more opticians will be needed to provide service to them. In addition, awareness of the importance of regular eye exams is increasing across all age groups, especially children and those over the age of 65. Recent trends indicate a movement toward a low vision society, where a growing number of people view things that are closer in distance, such as computer monitors, over the course of an average day. This trend is expected to increase the need for eye care services. Fashion also influences demand. Frames come in a growing variety of styles, colors, and sizes, encouraging people to buy more than one pair. Somewhat moderating the need for optician services is the increasing use of laser surgery to correct vision problems. Although the surgery remains relatively more expensive than eyewear, patients who successfully undergo this surgery may not require glasses or contact lenses for several years. Also, new technology is allowing workers to make the measurements needed to fit glasses and therefore allowing dispensing opticians to work faster, limiting the need for more workers. Job prospects: Overall, the need to replace dispensing opticians who retire or leave the occupation will result in very good job prospects. Employment opportunities for opticians in offices of optometrists the largest employer will be particularly good as an increasing number of ophthalmologists are expected to utilize better trained opticians to handle more tasks, allowing ophthalmologists to see more patients. Job opportunities also will be good at general merchandise stores because this segment is expected to experience much faster than average growth, as well as high turnover due to less favorable working conditions, such as long hours and mandatory weekend shifts. Nonetheless, the number of job openings overall will be somewhat limited because the occupation is small. Also, dispensing opticians are vulnerable to changes in the business cycle because eyewear purchases often can be deferred for a time. Job prospects will be best for those who have certification and those who have completed a formal opticianry program. Job candidates with extensive knowledge of new technology, including new refraction systems, framing materials, and edging techniques, should also experience favorable conditions. Licensed physical therapist assistants are educated health care providers that work under the supervision of a licensed professional physical therapist and assist in the provision of physical therapy interventions. The physical therapist assistant helps manage conditions such as sprains/strains, fractures, back and neck injuries, sports and work related injuries, and others. 56 Radiography: Degree Program Program Website Program Description The Radiography Program provides learning experiences that enable the student to acquire and assimilate the necessary technical competencies to function effectively as a supportive health care provider in the Radiography profession. A radiographer, also known as a Radiologic Technologist, is responsible for producing radiographs as prescribed by a physician. As the population grows and ages, there will be an increasing demand for diagnostic imaging. With age comes increased incidence of illness and injury, which often requires diagnostic imaging for diagnosis. In addition to diagnosis, diagnostic imaging is used to monitor the progress of disease treatment. With the increasing success of medical technologies in treating disease, diagnostic imaging will increasingly be needed to monitor progress of treatment. 68 Veterinary Technology: Degree Program Program Website Program Description Program Accreditation The Veterinary Technology Program provides learning experiences that enable the student to acquire and assimilate the necessary technical competencies to function effectively as a supportive health care provider in the profession. A veterinary technician is a rewarding profession with many opportunities for the graduate to grow and develop special interests in the vast field of veterinary medicine. Veterinary technicians typically conduct clinical work in a private practice under the supervision of a licensed veterinarian performing various medical tests and treat and diagnose medical conditions and diseases in animals. Some veterinary technicians record patients' case histories, expose and develop x rays and radiographs, and provide specialized nursing care. Veterinary technicians assisting small-animal practitioners usually care for small pets, such as cats and dogs, but can perform a variety of duties with mice, rats, sheep, pigs, cattle, monkeys, birds, fish, and frogs. You are 18 years old and have earned, or will earn at the time of application to the program, a high school diploma or a high school equivalency diploma (GED).

If this is your initial enrollment at Miami Dade College or you have not been enrolled at Miami Dade College during the past 12 months, complete the Application Packet available from the Admission Office s on any of the eight MDC Campuses. Choose the Medical Center Campus as the "preferred" campus; be sure to enter "23062" under "Program Code." 3. Schedule an appointment to take the Computerized Placement Test (CPT) through Testing Services, Room 1303, Medical Center Campus, , or through the testing center at any of the other MDC campuses. You must sign up at least one month in advance of taking the test, and you must take the test before the date that program application materials are due. You must have passing scores on the Computerized Placement Test (CPT), or, if you have taken the test but have not passed, then you must have satisfactorily completed the developmental courses prescribed by MDC as a result of your scores. 70 Completion Requirements Program Length call Students who have attended a foreign allied health or nursing program should consult the Miami Dade College catalog for more information about how to have their transcripts, diplomas, and credentials evaluated for U.S. equivalency. The Medical Center Campus Veterinary Technology Program is a six-semester course of study. Graduates of the program earns 73 credits resulting in an Associate of Science degree that includes approximately 400 hours of clinical exposure for the students in a variety of clinical settings, primarily but not exclusively small animal. Attendance is full-time, and the program commitment averages up to 40 hours per week. Since the program is designated to prepare students for the profession of Veterinary Technology rather than simply for a job, students should expect to attend conferences and seminars that are offered on occasional evenings and weekends.
