Introduction Reuters World News Express (WNE) is a file based television delivery system that transmits Reuters Video News (RVN) material, principally over satellite, as MPEG 2 video and XML scripts. The SkyStream Edge Media Receiver (EMR) is a DVB receiver that extracts IP content from the WNE satellite feed. This IP content is then reassembled into video and script files by the zband software and stored on your WNE PC. The EMR that you will have received from Reuters with your WNE installation is shown below: The Web-based interface for the EMR is shown below: Although, your EMR comes preconfigured for use, there are several procedures that you must complete yourself in order to begin receiving data from Reuters WNE satellite. Each of these procedures are described within this document: Connect the EMR to the WNE PC (described in the Physical Equipment Installation and Connections section of this document) Tune the receiver to the Reuters Satellite signal and verify that IP data is being received and stored locally on your WNE PC (the process by which this is accomplished is described within several sections of this document). Glossary of Abbreviations Abbreviation/Term C-Band DNS DVB EMR FEC GUI Description C Band is the original frequency allocation for communications satellites. C-Band uses GHz for downlink and Ghz for uplink. Domain Name Server Digital Video Broadcasting Edge Media Receiver - the SkyStream satellite receiver used for WNE reception Forward Error Correction is a system of error control for data transmission, wherein the sender adds redundant data (also known as an error correction code) to its messages. 7 Abbreviation/Term IFL IP/DVB K u Band LAN L-Band LNB LO MPEG NIC PID URL WNE Reuters Live Description Generically, IFL (Intra-Facility Link) refers to a cable which runs between two facilities. In satellite usage, the term IFL refers to the cable which connects the ODU (Out-Door- Unit) with the IDU (In-Door-Unit). This is the phrase used to describe the delivery of IP content over a DVB satellite network. The K u band (pronounced "kay-yoo") is a portion of the electromagnetic spectrum within the microwave range of frequencies. K u band is primarily used for satellite communications particularly from remote locations back to a television network's studio for editing and broadcasting. Local Area Network L band is a frequency range between 390MHz and 1.55GHz which is used for satellite communications and for terrestrial communications between satellite equipment. An LNB is used to convert Ku and C Band frequency bands to L band, which can be transmitted over the IFL and processed by the IDU. A low-noise block converter (LNB, for low-noise block, or sometimes LNC, for low-noise converter) is the (receiving, or downlink) antenna of a satellite dish commonly used for satellite TV reception. A device used to output the frequency of an incoming modulated radio-frequency carrier signal, to produce the required intermediate frequency. Motion Pictures Experts Group. Video file format. Network Interface Card (Process IDentifier) A temporary number assigned to a process or service. (Uniform Resource Locator, previously Universal Resource Locator) is the unique address for a file that is accessible on the Internet. World News Express - IP file-based delivery system for Reuters news content. Linear-based delivery system for Reuters news content. The WNE PC The WNE PC is equipped with a Stradis MPEG2 decoder card capable of playing out video content in both composite video and serial digital formats. The WNE PC also comes pre-installed with a second network card (NIC) which allows video content and scripts to be transferred from it to your server infrastructure. Video stories received from the Reuters satellite can be previewed on the WNE PC via the WNE website (provided that WNE PC has internet access). In addition, the WNE website can be used to control which video stories are played out via the Stradis card on the WNE PC (refer to the Online Help system within the WNE website for instructions on how to do this). Supplied Equipment The standard equipment supplied by Reuters with your WNE installation includes: EMR satellite receiver WNE PC able to store 10 days of video content (depending on the size of the files and the amount of content being stored) EMR Configuration Guide Issue 10 WNE v.5.0 2
Integrated Stradis MPEG decoder card with composite and SDI Output. Audio cable with 2 XLR connectors for balanced audio outputs and 1 XLR connector for digital audio output. Keyboard and mouse Physical Equipment Installation and Connections The EMR can be installed at your client site along with the WNE PC. The instructions below assume that: both the zband client software and other necessary Reuters applications are already installed on the WNE PC a monitor (not supplied with the WNE installation), keyboard and mouse are connected to the WNE PC. Steps 1. Mount the EMR in a 19-inch standard rack (or other appropriate location) using the screws and brackets provided. 2. Turn on your EMR and the WNE PC. Accessing the EMR through the WEB GUI requires that both devices share the same subnet address. All EMR LAN 2 ports default to an IP address of (LAN 1 is supplied with a default of ). 2. Change the IP address of the onboard NIC to match the subnet address on the EMRs LAN2 port (e.g ), with a Subnet Mask of Enter the LAN 2 EMR IP address into an internet browser window. EMR Configuration Guide Issue 10 WNE v.5.0 4
Note: A shortcut link may already exist in your browser s Links section called Skystream Networks Edge Media Router (also accessible via ). 4. The following EMR page will then be displayed. If you select one of the menu options in the left hand navigation bar, you will be prompted to login (as shown below). Figure 3 EMR web interface with login page 5. To login, enter the default user emradmin. No password is required. Note: If you are accessing the site for the first time or have just rebooted the EMR, you must supply the default user name. Otherwise, you will generally not be prompted for a login. The initial connectivity between your WNE PC and EMR has now been established. Next, you will need to ensure that you have signal lock to the satellite. Locking to the WNE signal 1. Select Satellite Receiver from beneath the Statistics menu in the left hand navigation bar. The Statistics- Satellite Receiver page will display the NO LOCK status for the key values shown below. This indicates that satellite parameters have not yet been entered into the EMR. Figure 5 Configuration of EMR tuner settings 3. Click Change Tuner Settings. The Configuration-Satellite Receiver 1 page will be displayed. EMR Configuration Guide Issue 10 WNE v.5.0 6
Figure 6 Tuner configuration page 4. Enter the parameters for the satellite that is applicable to your location. Refer to the tables in Figures 1 and 2 of the Global Satellite Coverage section of this document for the relevant regional downlink parameters. The settings you must reference are the D/L Frequency (L-Band Frequency), Symbol Rate and Polarization. L-Band Frequency is often noted as: KU Band Downlink Frequency LNB LO Frequency. C Band LNB LO Frequency Downlink Frequency A high proportion of LNBs used by subscribing Reuters Live clients tend to have a LO (Local Oscillator) frequency of 10GHz. In the example in Figure 6 above, the L-Band Frequency value is 1200MHz. In the example below, for an EMR unit in Europe, the frequency value is obtained by subtracting the D/L Satellite Frequency value from SES-4 for the Europe region (see Figure 1) from a local oscillator (LO) frequency of 10GHz or 9.75GHz. A few sample calculations are show below: 10GHz LO i.e MHz 10000MHz = 985.7MHz. 9.75GHz LO i.e MHz MHz = MHz. 5. Once the correct parameters have been entered, click Apply to accept the changes. If the entered parameters are correct, the Configuration - Tuner 1 page will be displayed. The Data Lock (FEC lock) field should now display a green lock (as shown in Figure 9). This indicates that the EMR has locked to the WNE satellite signal. Note: If a red light initially appears in the Data Lock (FEC lock) field, press F5 to refresh. The green lock light should then appear in that field. EMR Configuration Guide Issue 10 WNE v.5.0 7
Figure 7 Successful data lock Note: Refer to the Troubleshooting section at the end of this document if the signal has not locked. 6. Once you have successfully locked onto the Reuters signal, you must configure the EMR to extract the IP data from the satellite signal. This will include setting the relevant PID for the signal. Packet IDs (PIDs) are identifiers used to tag different MPEG component packets within a satellite signal (e.g. video, audio or in the case of WNE, IP data). WNE IP data is carried within the satellite signal on PID Select PID Selection from the Configuration menu in the left hand navigation bar. The Configuration PID Selection page will be displayed. 7. Click PID Selection. The PID Selection Receiver 1 page will then be displayed. Figure 8 New PID addition EMR Configuration Guide Issue 10 WNE v.5.0 8
8. Enter the PID value of 3550 in the New PID field and select the decimal option. Click Add to add this PID to the Active PIDs list for the EMR. 9. The EMR is now successfully locked to the WNE signal and is extracting IP data from the appropriate PID value. All IP data is carried on a multicast IP address and must be routed to the relevant EMR Ethernet port (e.g., Ethernet 2/LAN2). Standard WNE installations send received content through Ethernet 2 port on the EMR. 10. In order to distinguish between the different transmission standards, PAL (625) and NTSC (525), each format exists on a separate multicast address. These are provided below: Transmission paths multicast addresses 525 Satellite Transmission Path Satellite Transmission Path Select SkyCast from the Configuration menu in the left hand navigation menu. The Configuration - SkyCast page will then be displayed. 12. Click Edit on the multicast IP address ( or ). The Edit SkyCast Rule page will be displayed. Select the Forward and Ethernet2 options in the Action field for this multicast address. Figure 9 SkyCast Rule for the EMR 13. Click Apply to designate that IP data should be sent to Ethernet 2 and confirm your SkyCast Rule settings. 14. Your IP data should now be being received and processed correctly. You can verify data reception via the Network Interface Traffic and Statistics - Skycast pages. You can access these pages by selecting the Network Interface or SkyCast options from the Statistics menu in the left hand navigation bar. EMR Configuration Guide Issue 10 WNE v.5.0 9
Figures 13 & 14 below demonstrate the processing and destination of IP packets via the EMR. Figure 10 Network Interface Statistics Figure 11 SkyCast Statistics 15. Be sure to save all the configuration values you have just set to a configuration file! The process by which to do this is described in the Saving a Configuration File section of this document. Saving a configuration file Once the EMR is correctly connected to the WNE signal, extracting IP data from the appropriate multicast address and forwarding this IP data to Ethernet 2, this configuration should be saved as the default setting. EMR Configuration Guide Issue 10 WNE v
1. Select Configuration File from the Maintenance menu in the left hand navigation bar. The Maintenance- Configuration File page will be displayed. Figure 12 Default configuration file for an EMR Note: A default configuration file may already exist for this EMR. However, it is recommended that a new default file be created with the settings you have just configured. This default profile will then be loaded whenever the EMR is rebooted. In addition, if during the routine operation of your EMR, you or a Reuters support representative make any changes to the configuration settings of the EMR, you should save these changes to the configuration file to ensure that they are preserved whenever the EMR is rebooted. 2. Set the following fields on the Maintenance-Configuration File page: Enter a suitable name for this configuration in the Save current configuration as field. It is recommended that you enter the date that the profile was created In the Configuration description field. Ensure that the Default option has been selected. 3. Once these details have been entered, click Save to save this configuration. 4. It is recommended that you now reboot the EMR to ensure that the configuration is loaded correctly upon startup. 5. To reboot, select System Reboot from the Maintenance menu in the left hand navigation bar. A Reboot Now button will be displayed. Click it. The EMR requires approximately 60 seconds to fully reboot and lock onto the WNE signal. You EMR configuration is now complete. Note: If the configuration file is not correctly loaded when your EMR is rebooted, ensure that you have properly set all your configuration settings and saved them to the configuration file or contact a Reuters support representative for assistance. Troubleshooting Unable to lock to the WNE signal Items to verify: Verify the LNB values that have been entered (refer to Figures 7 & 8). Several WNE installations have uncovered a different LNB value when examined by an engineer. For example, if it is believed that a 10GHz LNB is installed, try altering the L-Band frequency value by ± 500MHz. Check the quality of the RF coaxial cable connecting to the EMR. The F connector is a type of coaxial RF connector commonly used for: EMR Configuration Guide Issue 10 WNE v
