However, this is dependent on the volume of applications in each month of the application period. The Academy may call upon individuals for interviews in certain circumstances. 6 PORTFOLIO: Practical tasks must please be presented in a simple undecorated A3 binder of your choice. Section A: Practical tasks To be presented in a simple undecorated binder of your choice in A3 size. Try your best, we are asking for your own answers or interpretations, there are no right or wrong answers. 1. Draw, sketch, scribble. On an A3 sheet please draw fifteen different drawings of a piece of furniture or household object. Different can mean different media (i.e. pencil, brush, pen) and also different styles of drawing (i.e. line only, shading only). Fill the sheet with the drawings. 2. Design a postcard Conceptualize (important) and design a post card for one of the following cities: Cape Town, P.E, Durban or Johannesburg. This postcard needs to have a professional finish whether it is a sourced image, photographed image, illustrated image, or purely typographical execution. It should not be your average literal visual of the city, but rather what one experiences or leaves the city with, what stays with you long after you have gone. 2.2 Once you have completed your postcard concept and design, please identify your target market and write up a brief description of your concept.

7 3.1. Logo design. Choose only one of the two options below and design a suitable logo and poster. 1. Design a new logo for the Stellenbosch Academy of Design and Photography. The Academy offers degree courses in Graphic Design, Photography, Art Direction, Illustration and Multimedia Studies. Your new logo must be attractive for prospective students yet represent a highly professional brand identity. 2. Design a logo, Toro Toro, a steak house that specialises in only organic products. The establishment is also proudly South African, which requires that you identify key concepts that represent the country in your design solution Poster design: Design a poster for the logo option that you chose. The poster can be in colour or black and white depending on the personality of your brand. Format: A3 portrait. Research: This part of the project is a written component. Please use bullet points. Who are the main competitors? Who is the target market? Use key words to describe your brand Visual research: This part of the project requires visual reference. Create a concept board that represents the brand you have chosen. Format: A3 Medium: You can use colouring pencils and pen and ink for the process work and the final execution. Digital (computer) design must only be done for the final logo and not the process work. Use the work sheet supplied for process work and final design. This sheet can be enlarged to A3 to utilise the given space better.

8 4. Observations Interpret the following photographically (each image approximately A4 size) and indicate if/where Photoshop is used. 1. Interpret the family without including people in the image. Has our idea of family changed within contemporary society? 2. Show an example of how light interacts with the construction of urban space. Study how light begins to influence shape and form and thus our experience of a place. 3. You get out of life what you put in. Push past the obvious and see the inspiration all around you. Discover the extraordinary by using your mobile phone to view the world through a different lens. 4. What does Monday look like? What does Monday feel like? 5. Optional extra: If you have some of your own work you would like to add, please add max 3 pieces.

9 Section B: Written Tasks (Complete by hand or typed on A4 sheets and added to binder) 1. Why are you applying to study BA Visual Communication at Stellenbosch Academy? 2. Where did you hear about the Academy? 3. What are your interests? What inspires you? Be as descriptive as possible. 4. Name the last three movies you watched. Write a very short synopsis of one of these movies using no more or less than thirty words that will persuade us to go and see it. 5. Name three of your all-time favourite books. 6. Which is your favourite television advertisement? What makes it appeal to you? What does the advertisement promise you, the consumer? That s it. There are no right or wrong answers we want to see your solution to these questions so go with your gut feeling. This is more about how you think and see things than it is anything to do with how well you can draw. Have fun.

10 3. Logo design - (Worksheet). SKETCH DESIGNS Produce three ideas for a new logo in rough form. FINAL DESIGN Produce your final design below: RATIONALE/ REASONING Please write a small paragraph explaining your final choice of logo and design.

11 All students who enrol in the first year BA Degree course will need the following photographic equipment for the first six months of the course: 1. A digital SLR camera body + lens: Low price range and recommended: Nikon D3100/D3200/D5100 DSLRs Canon EOS 100D/600D/700D DSLRs; Middle price range and recommended: Nikon D7000/D7100 DSLRs, Canon EOS 70D/60D DSLRs; High price range and recommended: Nikon D600/D800/D800E DSLRs, Canon EOS 5D Mark III/60D/70D DSLRs 2. USB Cable (usually supplied with purchase of new camera) 3. Memory card 2 GB or more 4. Camera Bag 5. Lens cleaning kit 6. 4GB/8GB USB flash drive If a student is going to choose photography as their major, it is recommended that the following additional equipment be purchased for the start of the second semester in July: Dedicated Camera Flash, AA batteries, A solid stable tripod e.g.: Manfrotto 055 range with a 332RC2 or 222 Head, UV Filter for all your lenses, Polarizing filter, Gaffer tape, Anti-static cloth, Dust-off air can, Glass for contact prints: 35 x 30cm, 5mm thick. You can tape the edges with gaffer tape. ADDITIONAL you do not have to purchase the following but is recommended if you plan to continue in photography as a major in all three years: Macro lens, Wide angle lens e.g mm, Standard fixed 50mm lens, Zoom lenses covering the longer focal lengths e.g.: mm
