1 CENTER OF EXPERTISE IN ACADEMIC HEALTHCARE MANAGEMENT FOR PARTNERS RESIDENTS & FELLOWS 2009 PARTICIPATING FACULTY CENTER CHAIRS: JEAN R ELRICK, MD Dr. Elrick is Senior Vice President, Administration, at Massachusetts General Hospital, a position she has held since In this role she is responsible for hospital operations and three clinical departments, including over 2900 staff and employees, $300 million of the operating budget and over $875 million in capital and construction projects. Prior to this position, she was Vice President at Partners HealthCare in Boston, responsible for marketing, supply chain management, joint operating programs, system wide cost reduction and system based services in pharmacy, radiology, and clinical laboratories. She joined Partners from the MGH in 1996 where she had been Director of the Decision Support Unit and Associate Director of the Cardiac Surgical Intensive Care Unit. Dr. Elrick joined the medical staff of the MGH in 1991 and continues an active clinical practice in the Department of Anesthesia and Critical Care. She is an Assistant Clinical Professor in Anesthesia and Critical Care at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Elrick received the MD degree magna cum laude degree from Harvard Medical School in 1986, completing the specialized curriculum of the Harvard/MIT Division of Health Sciences and Technology. This followed a BS in computer science summa cum laude from the University of Massachusetts at Boston in 1982 and a diploma in nursing from the New England Deaconess Hospital in At the MGH she completed an internship in surgery followed by residency in anesthesia and fellowship in critical care medicine, finishing in In 1996 she completed the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School. She currently serves on the Board of Directors of VHA, Inc.

2 MICHAEL GUSTAFSON, MD, MBA CORE FACULTY MEMBERS Dr. Michael Gustafson is Chief Operating Officer of Faulkner Hospital, Boston, MA. In his previous role as Senior Vice President, Clinical Excellence, BWH/Faulkner Hospitals, Dr. Gustafson directed the Center for Clinical Excellence, which was created in 2001 to guide the institution s strategies for clinical performance measurement, analysis, improvement, and planning across such dimensions of care as service excellence, operational efficiency, quality, and patient safety. He also served as a principal quality liaison and representative for the institution within Partners HealthCare System and with the Dana Farber Cancer Institute. He was the Executive Sponsor for a hospital wide Balanced Scorecard reporting and management system at BWH, one of the first of its kind to be implemented in a U.S. academic medical center. In 2005, he also assumed direct operational responsibility for the institution s Pharmacy and Pathology Services, with oversight for approximately 800 FTE s and annual operating expenses exceeding $140 million. Dr. Gustafson serves as an Instructor in the Department of Surgery at Harvard Medical School, with research interests including riskadjusted surgical outcomes, the application of human factors and systems thinking to patient safety, and effective structures and methods to drive change within complex healthcare settings. He completed his MD degree at West Virginia University, his General Surgery residency at Brigham & Women s Hospital, and a 3 year NIHfunded surgical research fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital. He later went on to become one of the first surgeons to ever receive an MBA degree from Harvard Business School, where he graduated in 1999 with honors. Dr. Adler is responsible for department and hospital network development and strategy, for physician mgmt of Brigham Medical specialties, for BWH DOM relationship with other health care centers. 3 O Neill Britton, MD Associate Chief of Medicine, Faulkner Hospital Craig Alan Bunnell, M.D.,M.P.H. Assistant Professor of Medicine, Breast Oncology Center, Dana Farber Cancer Institute Marcy Carty, M.D.,M.P.H. Director, Clinical Operations Improvement, Brigham & Women's Hospital Dr. Bunnell received his MD from Harvard Medical School and his MPH from Harvard School of Public Health in He received his MBA from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in He completed his residency in internal medicine and a fellowship in hematology and oncology at the Brigham and Womens Hospital, where he also served as chief medical resident. He joined the DFCI faculty in 1996, and is a member of the Breast Oncology Center in the Gillette Womens Cancers Program and the Associate Chief Medical Officer of the Dana Farber Cancer Institute. Marcy Carty, MD, MPH is BWH director of Clinical Operations Improvement, a newly created role in which her foci are leading many on going and new IT projects and developing and implementing an innovative inpatient care model with improved caregiver communications, streamlined processes, improved ACGME work hour compliance and cost stabilization. Dr. Carty earned her MD from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and a master s in public health from Tufts Medical School, and trained in BWH s Department of Medicine and served as a hospitalist at BW/F for several years. Most recently, she was a senior consultant in the Center for Clinical Excellence. In addition, Carty is completing a two year fellowship in pain and

4 palliative care on her way towards board certification in that specialty. Dr. Coblyn is the former director of primary care at BWH and has managed network Integration of inpatient activities to improve efficiencies. Jonathan Coblyn, M.D. Faculty, Brigham & Women's Hospital Christopher H.Colecchi Vice President, Partners Research Ventures Dennis D. Colling Vice President, Partners Human Resources Mr Colecchi serves as Vice President of Research Ventures at Partners. In this role he is responsible for the trranslation of intellectual property and science to commercial entities. He oversees licensing, start up companies and acquiring venture capital for research innovations. Mr Colling has overall responsibility for Human Resources Management for Partners HealthCare. This role incorporates General Management, Organization Development. and developing health careers. Mr Colling previously worked as Associate Vice President at University of Pennsylvania and Assoc. VP Human Resources at University of Pennsylvania Health System..

5 Jessica Dudley, M.D. Chief Medical Officer, Brigham & Women's Physicians Organization Sunil Eappen, M.D. Executive Director, Operating Room, Mass Eye and Ear Infirmary As Chief Medical Officer for the Brigham and Women s Physician s Organization, Dr. Dudley is responsible for overseeing the contracting efforts on behalf of the BWPO and leading the medical management team in developing and implementing programs designed to meet pay for performance targets related to efficiency and quality. Additional responsibilities include addressing physician work life issues and collaboration and development of physician leadership and volunteerism programs. In 2009 Dr. Eappen is Chairman of the Department of Anesthesiology and the medical director of the operating rooms at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary in Boston, Massachusetts. The Mass. Eye and Ear has 17 operating rooms and performs approximately 17, 000 operative procedures yearly including nearly 4500 pediatric procedures. Prior to this position, He worked at the Brigham and Women s Hospital as a staff anesthesiologist and was the Vice Chairman for Clinical Affairs and the Clinical Director. Dr. Eappen started his career spending three years in a basic science laboratory investigating the contribution of the spinal cord to mechanisms of action of general anesthetics and the interaction of various anesthetic agents. Recent research interests involve quality and operational efficiency in the utilization of operating room resources Matthew Fishman Vice President for Community Health, Partners Matt Fishman became Director of Community Benefit Programs for Partners since In 2005, he became Vice President for Community Health. His work focuses on improving systems of care for low income and uninsured patients; improving state payments for health services; participating actively in statewide efforts to reform the Medicaid program and to provide affordable coverage for the uninsured through the state s health care reform legislation. He also leads Partners efforts to collaborate with community health centers and other community based organizations to make measurable progress on tough public health problems (including racial disparities, cancer, alcohol and substance abuse among young people, infant mortality, domestic violence, and immigrant

6 health) in the urban communities the Partners system serves. Workforce development initiatives, in collaboration with the Partners hospitals, are another important element of his work. These initiatives focus on providing lower wage workers and community residents with options for moving up the health care career ladder through additional education and training. Mr. Fishman began his career in state government. He served as Budget Director for the Massachusetts Department of Public Welfare and then as Assistant Secretary of Human Services during the second and third terms of Governor Michael Dukakis. He helped to develop and obtain legislative financing for what became a nationally recognized job training, employment, and child care program for women on public assistance, and he played a major role in the first effort to design and finance a statewide universal health coverage system. He also led efforts to improve services for the elderly, expand substance abuse and HIV/AIDS treatment, and convert underutilized hospitals to other uses. Nancy Gagliano,M.D. Former Vice President, Practice Improvement, Massachusetts General Physicians Organization Nancy J. Gagliano, M.D. has been Chief Medical Officer of MinuteClinic, Inc. since March Dr. Gagliano is responsible for the overall delivery of high quality clinical care to MinuteClinic patients, the provision of appropriate physician supervision to nurse practitioners in collaborative practice and the establishment and maintenance of relationships with the external physician community. She also serves as an Assistant Professor of Harvard Medical School. Dr. Gagliano has more than twenty years of experience in ambulatory care operations, including quality, administration, compliance, and finance. Most recently, she served as Senior Vice President of Practice Improvement at Massachusetts General Hospital and Massachusetts General Physicians Organization in Boston. Dr. Gagliano also has experience as a Medical and Clinical Director of Massachusetts General primary care and women's health ambulatory operations. She is a member of the Healthcare Information Management Systems Society, the American College of Physicians and the American College of Physician Executives. Dr. Gagliano is a graduate of Harvard Medical School.

7 Tom Glynn Former Chief Operating Officer, Partners Gary Gottlieb, MD,MBA President, Partners Healthcare Thomas P. Glynn was the Chief Operating Officer of Partners HealthCarefrom 1996 through 2010, where he is responsible for oversight of finance, information systems, human resources, real estate, development, marketing, and community benefits. Previously, Glynn served in the Clinton Administration as Deputy Secretary of the United States Department of Labor, as Senior Vice President for Finance and Administration at Brown University, as General Manager of the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority and as Deputy Commissioner of the Massachusetts Department of Public Welfare. Mr. Glynn is Chairman of the Board of Overseers of the Heller School at Brandeis University and a Brandeis Trustee. He serves as a fellow of the National Academy of Public Administration. Previously, he served on the Board of Directors of John Hancock Financial Services. Gary L. Gottlieb, MD, MBA today became President and CEO of Partners HealthCare, serving as the fourth Partners CEO since the organization was founded in Dr. Gottlieb held a number of senior leadership positions since he joined the Partners organization in 1998, as its first Chairman of Partners Psychiatry and Mental Health and Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. He has been President of Brigham and Women s Hospital since Prior to this, he served as President of North Shore Medical Center from 2000 through In addition to his numerous roles nationally in psychiatry and health care, Dr. Gottlieb is committed to expanding access to care for all members of our community as evidenced by his past role as co chair of the Mayor s Task Force to Eliminate Health Disparities; he serves as chairman of the Private Industry Council, the Mayor s workforce development board in guiding and building a health care labor force for the future, as well as expanding educational opportunities for young people in Boston.

8 Dr. Harris serves as Co Director of the BWH/PO Physician Leadership Academy in addition to maintain a practice as a BWH Spine and orthopedic trauma surgeon. Mitchel B. Harris, M.D. Associate Professor in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Brigham & Women's Hospital, Chief of the BWH Orthopedic Trauma Service James Heffernan Chief Financial Officer, Massachusetts General Physicians Organization James L. Heffernan, FHFMA, MBA, is CFO and treasurer of the Massachusetts General Physicians Organization (MGPO), Inc., a charitable, not for profit corporation in Boston, Massachusetts. He is responsible for all the finance functions for MGPO, including billing, payment analysis, corn phance, budgeting, and financial reporting. He also plays a significant role in managed care contracting. The MGPO has 975 physicians and more than 2,000 employees, and contracts with another 600 physicians for managed care. Massachusetts General Hospital, the corporate member and general hospital of the MGPO, is one of the principal teaching hospitals of Harvard Medical School. Brent Henry Vice President and Brent Henry is Vice President and General Counsel of Partners HealthCare. He oversees the legal department and corporate compliance. Previously in his career, Mr. Henry was Vice President and General Counsel of MedStar Health, a hospital system serving the Baltimore Washington corridor. He has also served as the Deputy Administrator of the New York City Human Resources Administration (where he directed the NYC Medicaid program), and as the Director of Business and Governmental Affairs for Greater Southeast Health Care System in Washington, DC. Mr. Henry began his career as an attorney with the law firm of Jones, Day. He has also taught health care law at the Howard University and University of Maryland graduate programs in health

9 General Counsel, Partners Sheridan L. Kassirer Vice President, Quality Management and Clinical Programs, Partners Ramin Khorasani, M.D.,M.P.H. Vice Chair of Radiology, Brigham & Women's Hospital administration.mr. Henry received his J.D. degree from Yale Law School, and a Master of Urban Studies from the Yale School of Art and Architecture. He received his B.A. degree from Princeton University, where he studied in the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs. Ms. Kassirer oversees Partners Quality Management as well as the Partners Clinical Programs She is also the Associate Director for High Performance Medicine focused on 5 major system wide quality improvement efforts. Previously, Kassirer served in Vice President positions at the BWH and other management positions at Children s Hospital, Beth Israel Hospital and the New England Medical Center. She has served in an operations role serving departments such as Surgical Services, Medicine, Cardiac Services, Radiology as well as staff roles in Strategic Planning and Quality Management. She was a founder of Pratt Medical Group, an academic group practice for the Department of Medicine at Tufts New England Medical Center. Ms. Kassirer holds an MBA from Northeastern University. Dr. Khorsani leads the BWH Decision Systems Group (DSG), a biomedical informatics research and development laboratory at Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women's Hospital. Its overall focus is on development of algorithms, software environments, and computer based tools that support the work of health care professionals (physicians, nurses, and other practitioners) and biomedical researchers. The DSG conducts research in computer based decision support for patients and physicians, information retrieval, clinical information systems, image based reasoning, bioinformatics, informatics for global health, and a variety of machine learning applications. The DSG is a key participant in the Boston area Informatics Research Training program. DSG faculty teach and supervise trainees in the Master's of Biomedical Informatics program at Harvard MIT, as well as postdoctoral fellows (mostly MDs and PhDs in computer science or statistics).

10 Peter Markell Vice President for Finance, Partners David McGuire Vice President, System Contracting and Contract Finance, Partners Betsy Nadel, President BW/F Mr. Peter K. Markell has been Vice President of Finance of Partners HealthCare Systems, Inc. since Peter is responsible for Partners research management as well as Finance. Prior to, he served as a Partner with Ernst & Young LLP from 1977 to 1998 and Interim Chief Financial Officer for Massachusetts General Hospital from 1995 to He has been a Director of Courier Corp. since November 1, He serves as a Member of the Boston College Board of Trustees and a Member of their Finance and Audit Committee. He serves as a Director of Eastern Bank. In addition, he serves as a Director of several educational and charitable organizations. He was educated at Boston College, Mr. Markell earned his BSBA in Mr. McGuire is a leader in the area of contractual relations with 3rd party payers including physician and hospital reimbursement, pay for performance, capitation and other payment reform initiatives and other payment schemes. Elizabeth G. Nabel, MD, is the president of the Brigham and Women's/Faulkner Hospitals, a position she assumed on Jan. 4, Prior to her position at BWH, Dr Nabel served as the director of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute at the National Institutes of Health. In this capacity, Dr. Nabel oversaw an extensive national research portfolio with an annual budget of approximately $3.0 billion to prevent, diagnose, and treat heart, lung, and blood diseases. A native of St. Paul, Minnesota, she attended Weill Cornell Medical College and conducted her internal medicine and cardiovascular training at Brigham and Women s Hospital, Harvard Medical School, followed by faculty positions at the University of Michigan Medical School where she directed the Division of Cardiology and the Cardiovascular Research Center.

11 Sanjay Pathak, Vice President, Surgical Services & Imaging, Brigham & Women's Hospital Sanjay Pathak joined BWH in 2007 as vice president of Surgical Services and Imaging. In his work, Pathak builds on collaborations with hospital leadership, chiefs of service, nursing and all clinical teams to further the important work of the departments of Surgery, Neurosurgery, Anesthesia, Orthopedics and Radiology. Pathak previously served as corporate director of business planning and market development at Partners HealthCare, where he and his team directed major strategic and capital initiatives. He has been deeply involved in many BWH projects, including South Shore Hospital and the joint cancer center there with Dana Farber. Pathak received his BS in biology at the University of Vermont and went on to Boston University Graduate School of Management to earn an MBA and the Boston University School of Medicine to earn an MPH. He began his health care career at New England Medical Center in clinical risk management. Dr. Poon is responsible for clinical information systems development and management; specifically those impacting Patient Safety and Quality of Care at Partners. Eric G.Poon, M.D.,M.P.H. Corporate Manager, Partners

12 Ann Prestipino Senior Vice President of Surgical and Anesthesia Services and Clinical Development, Massachusetts General Hospital Michael L. Reney BWF Chief Financial Officer, Brigham & Women's Hospital Ms. Prestipino serves as the Senior Vice President for Surgical and Anesthesia Services and Clinical Business Development at MGH and the MGPO. She is responsible for all administrative and financial aspects including the clinical, educational and research programs in the Departments of Surgery, Anesthesia and Critical Care and Pain Management, Orthopaedics, Emergency Services, Urology, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Pediatric Surgery. In addition, she serves as the senior executive responsible for the MGH Heart Center and the MGH Vascular Center and serves as the co leader of the Partners Cardiac Executive Committee. She has been asked to develop the clinical business development function for the MGH/MGPO and to work with CIMIT, the Center for the Integration of Medicine and Innovative Technology. She serves as Senior Advisor to the Partners Emergency Preparedness Committee and chairs the MGH Emergency Preparedness Committee and sits on a wide number of committees involved in both the overall administration of the hospital and the physician organization. She began working at the Massachusetts General Hospital during the 1980 s as the Assistant to the Director of Operations, moving on to the Administrative Director for Emergency Services and then becoming the Director of Patient Services. In 1989 Ann was promoted to the position of Assistant General Director for Surgical and Anesthesia Services and in 1992 became Vice President for these areas. In 2001 she was promoted to Senior Vice President. As chief financial officer for Brigham and Women s and Faulkner Hospitals, Michael Reney is responsible for all financial related services for BW/F, covering $2 billion+ in gross revenues each year. He plays a major role on the executive leadership team in business decisions and financial agreements. Mr. Reney began his career at Brigham and Women s Hospital as an accounting supervisor in He managed eight accountants, was responsible for cashier s office and worked with the clinical improvement team that focused on expanding access for patients and improved registration.with the formation of Partners HealthCare and the centralization of financial services for the member hospitals, Reney rose through the ranks as a senior

13 Selwyn Rogers, M.D.,M.Ph. Director, Surgical Critical Care, Brigham & Women's Hospital Joan A Sapir Senior Vice President, Massachusetts General Hospital manager and director over a 10 year stretch before coming back to the Brigham as executive director/controller for BW/F Finance in Reney holds a bachelor s degree in accounting from Bentley College and a master s degree in business administration with a concentration in health care financial management from UMass. Selwyn O. Rogers, Jr., M.D., M.P.H. is an Assistant Professor of Surgery, Harvard Medical School, and serves as Division Chief for Trauma, Burns, and Surgical Critical care at Brigham and Women s Hospital. Dr. Rogers research work has focused on outcomes following surgical procedures, disparities in surgical care, and improving the quality of healthcare. Using epidemiological and health services research methods, areas of investigation include characterizing outcomes of different patient populations. Future investigation will focus on improving the quality of care and processes of care. Based upon his clinical interests in the care of patients in the Intensive Care Unit, relevant patient populations in clued critically ill and trauma patients. Furthermore, he has a great deal of interest in improving the quality of care of minority populations. He has sought to translate research into practice by promoting health equity with community efforts, including Family Service of Greater Boston, churches, and the Boston Public Health Commission. Dr. Rogers received his Bachelor s degree and M.D. from Harvard and a Master s in Public Health at Vanderbilt University s School of Public Health. He completed his general surgery residency in 1998 and joined the staff of BWH. He completed a critical care fellowship at BWH/MGH. Ms. Sapir is involved in a wide range of operations improvement projects and inaugurated the position of Vice President of Customer Service and Practice Support where she focused on improving communication among care givers, assuring access to specialty services, addressing problems with telephone service in the outpatient practices, and enhancing the service culture. Currently, as Vice President for Neurosciences, Pediatrics and Dermatology, Ms. Sapir provides support and guidance to the Departments of Neurology, Neurosurgery, Psychiatry, Dermatology, Molecular Biology, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and the MassGeneral Hospital for Children. Joan

14 Steven E. Seltzer, M.D. Chairman, Department of Radiology, BWH Peter L. Slavin, M.D. President, Massachusetts General Hospital graduated from Yale University with a bachelors in Psychology, completed a masters in Educational Administration and Organizational Behavior from Harvard and received an MBA from Harvard, concentrating in the management of non profit organizations. Prior to coming to the Mass. General in 1986, Joan was Assistant Director of Boston s Beth Israel Hospital responsible for Ambulatory Care and Emergency Services. Dr. Seltzer has been the Chairman of the Department of Radiology at Brigham and Women's Hospital and the Philip H. Cook Professor of Radiology at Harvard Medical School since He is the immediate past Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Brigham and Women's Physician Organization. His clinical interests are in the field of abdominal imaging, particularly advanced applications of helical CT. His research interests are in the arena of perception and psychophysics, focusing on improving our understanding of how radiologists detect, locate and classify abnormalities on diagnostic images. He has published well over 100 peer reviewed research manuscripts on these topics. Peter L. Slavin, MD, has been the president of Massachusetts General Hospital since From , he served as chairman and chief executive officer of the Massachusetts General Physicians Organization, which included over 1,700 physicians and employed nearly 1,000 of them. From , Dr. Slavin served as president of Barnes Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, Miss. Before that, he did his training in internal medicine at Mass General from and was senior vice president and chief medical officer from Dr. Slavin graduated from Harvard College in 1979, Harvard Medical School in 1984 and Harvard Business School in Dr. Slavin teaches internal medicine and health care management at Harvard Medical School, where he is a professor of health care policy. He lectures widely on topics including quality and utilization management, the economics of teaching hospitals and the state of physician practices.

15 Allen L.Smith, M.D.,M.S. President, Brigham & Women's Physicians Organization Frederick Van Pelt, M.D. Director, Global Programs, Partners Harvard Medical International Service Allen L. Smith, MD, MS, has been president of the Brigham and Women s Physicians Organization since IN this role he is responsible for Physician leadership and management. Managed Care. Contracting. Network Development for the PO. He had been the BWPO s chief medical officer since As the PO s chief medical officer Smith led strategic efforts in network development, medical management and contracting. He has played a crucial role on building and fortifying relationships with BWH and PO affiliates, the government, payors and other organizations that contribute to the success of BWH clinical programs and academic departments.. Before joining BWH in 2004, Smith was medical director of the largest Medicare Advantage plan in New England at Tufts Health Plan. While at Tufts, he also served as assistant vice president for strategy and business. Prior to that, he was a primary care physician at North Shore Medical Center. Dr. van Pelt joined Partners Harvard Medical International in He works with PHMI team members and faculty on programs focused on quality improvement and patient safety. He brings to these collaborations a background in the delivery of acute care, perioperative, and surgical and minimally invasive care services, as well as in change management with an emphasis on systemsthinking and human dynamics. Prior to joining PHMI, Dr. van Pelt served in both clinical and administrative roles in the anesthesia department of the Brigham & Women s Hospital. While at the Brigham he was active in helping to develop and improve the hospital s anesthesia services, particularly in the areas of minimally invasive services and Out of OR anesthesia. Throughout his medical training and career, he has maintained an interest in improving patient care and service. To this end he has published and presented widely on patient safety and quality improvement, participated in numerous initiatives and groups focused on patient care improvement, and consulted internationally on quality and policy issues. He is a co founder of the Clinician Peer Support Service at the Brigham, a service dedicated to providing support to care providers following adverse medical events, and is the former Chairman of the Board for Medically Induced Trauma Support Services (MITTS). Dr. van Pelt,

16 a graduate of Amherst College in Massachusetts, received his medical degree from the University of Massachusetts Medical School, and also earned an MBA from Harvard Business School. He is Instructor of Anesthesiology at Harvard Medical School. Sharon A. Vitti Vice President of Clinical Services, Brigham & Women's Hospital Anthony Whittemore, M.D. Chief Medical Officer, Brigham & Women's Hospital In 2006 Sharon Vitti, was named vice president of Clinical Services. Prior to that appointment she served as department administrator for Obstetrics and Gynecology. As VP she oversees Women's Health, Obstetrics and Gynecology, New Born Medicine and Ambulatory Services. In this role she develops and achieves strategic, financial, teaching, research and clinical goals. Vitti has a master's degree in Public Administration from New York University and a bachelor's degree in psychology and biology from Clark University. She joined BWH as OB/GYN department administrator in March 2004 after spending six years as a senior manager in health care consulting. She also has held administrative leadership positions at the former New England Deaconess Hospital and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Vitti is BWH's first vice president level leader dedicated to ambulatory services. Anthony D. (Andy) Whittemore, MD, is CMO at BWH, a position he assumed January 1, Dr. Whittemore joined the medical staff of BWH in 1976 and served as the director of the Surgical Residency Training Program from 1980 until He then served as chief of the Division of Vascular Surgery and Director of the BWH Vascular Center. Dr. Whittemore also served as vice chair of the Department of Surgery and is Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School. He maintains a surgical practice focused on aortic and carotid arterial reconstruction. Dr. Whittemore has served as chairman of both the Medical Staff Executive and Quality Assurance/Risk Management committees at BWH. These roles provided an opportunity to initiate several hospital wide programs that have made BWH a national leader in patient safety, including the application of bar code technology for medication administration and implementation of a web based medical error reporting system. He was instrumental in creating the BWH professionalism program, the Center for

Zinner currently serves as the Moseley Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School, the Surgeon in Chief at the Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH), and Clinical Director of the Dana Farber/Brigham and Women s Cancer Center. In 1997, Dr. Zinner was appointed to the Board of Directors of Partners HealthCare System, the parent organization that oversees BWH and Massachusetts General Hospital, its affiliated hospitals, and integrated delivery system. He also served on the Advisory Board of the Institute for Health Care Policy at the Heller Graduate School at Brandeis University. Beginning in 1985 Dr. Zinner served to as Vice Chairman of the Department of Surgery and Co director of the Gastrointestinal Service at Johns Hopkins Hospital. In 1988, he became Chairman of the Department of Surgery at UCLA Medical School and Medical Center. Dr. Zinner was appointed Dean for Clinical Affairs at UCLA Medical School in He served in both capacities until 1994 when he moved to Boston to become the Chairman of the Department of Surgery at BWH. In 2004, he established the Center for Surgery and Public Health, a collaboration between the Harvard Medical School (through the Department of Surgery at the Brigham and Women's Hospital) and the Harvard School of Public Health. :
