3 dear friends & supporters, Wow the season at the Center for Puppetry Arts has been a truly remarkable year! Your support has allowed us to broaden our reach to audiences of all ages, and to develop and deliver innovative programs and performances of the highest quality. The Family Series got off to a great start with the opening of Dr. Seuss s The Cat in the Hat. The Center s production of this work was the first known professional adaptation of this script for the puppet stage. Another major highlight of the Family Series was the Center s co-production with Flying Carpet Theatre company of New York 1001 Nights : A Love Story About Loving Stories that featured music by award-winning composer Robert Lopez. In addition to rave reviews by critics and audiences, the show also received nominations in every category for which it was eligible by the Suzi Bass Awards, Atlanta s Theater Awards. For adult and teen audiences, the Center presented three productions in the New Directions Series: Autumn Portraits by Sandglass Theater s Eric Bass of Putney, VT; Great Expectations by David Simpich Marionettes of Colorado Springs, CO; and the Center s own XPT: Xperimental Puppetry Theater. The Museum opened several new exhibits including Cinderella s Tightrope: Adapted Childhood Tales, an exhibit featuring puppets and designs from the Center s own productions from the past three decades, which opened in September 2013 as part of our 35th Anniversary Celebration. We also announced the details on our building plans and designs for the Center s museum expansion, which is set to open in Fall The expanded museum will feature two galleries one for the Global Collection and another for the Jim Henson Collection. The Center s Education Program continued to serve audiences of all ages both onsite and through a variety of outreach programs. From workshops for adults on marionette manipulation and Chinese shadow puppetry presented as part of the Explore Puppetry Series to Preschool Puppetry Playshops offered at area libraries to interactive Distance Learning programs presented nation-wide (and some globally), the Center s talented teaching artists reached thousands of individuals in exciting new ways. Keep reading to learn more about this incredible year and how your support helped us to achieve our mission to touch lives through the art of puppetry. As always, thank you for all you do for the Center. Gratefully, Vincent Anthony Barbara and Bill Wylly Executive Director 2

4 production highlights 1001 nights: a love story about loving stories Audiences were swept off to fantastical faraway places when 1001 Nights: A Love Story About Loving Stories hit the stage for a limited two week engagement, March 25-April 6. Broadway musical powerhouse Robert Lopez and innovative Flying Carpet Theatre Co. joined forces with the Center to create the ultimate family puppet musical. In this celebration of brainy imagination over brawn, a princess used her wits to save a kingdom from an evil decree as she spun tale after tale for a narrowminded king. Featuring genies, jesters, 40 thieves and other captivating characters, the princess s cliffhanger stories kept the king and audiences on the edge of their seats. This playful adaptation of the Arabian Nights fairy tales was first conceived in 1998 by Tony and Academy Award winner Robert Lopez ( Avenue Q, The Book of Mormon, Frozen ) and Adam Koplan, artistic director of Flying Carpet Theatre Co. This newly reimagined production featured early songs by Lopez and was co-directed by Koplan and Jon Ludwig, Artistic Director of the Center for Puppetry Arts. All the puppets were designed by the Center s Resident Puppet Builder Jason von Hinezmeyer and built by the talented crew in the Center s puppet building shop Nights was an inspired combination of Lopez s catchy tunes, Flying Carpet s inventive staging, and the Center s internationally recognized puppetry expertise center performers Dolph Amick Eric Baumgartner Mary Nye Bennett Jared Brodie Alexandra Duncan Aaron Gotlieb Terry Guest Brian Harrison Reay Kaplan Eliana Marianes Mandy Mitchell Chaz Pofahl Nancy Riggs Rudy Roushdi Amy Sweeney Tim Sweeney Geoff Uterhardt John Wright Performance Interns Megan Jance Rachel Kaplan Seth Langer Damian Lockhardt Kelsey Medlin Show sponsored in part by: center company performances Dr. Seuss s The Cat in the Hat Based on the book by Dr. Seuss Play originally produced by the National Theatre of Great Britain Adapted and originally directed by Katie Mitchell Center for Puppetry Arts production directed by Jon Ludwig Rumpelstiltskin Adapted by Bobby Box & Amy Sweeney Based on the story by The Brothers Grimm Directed by Amy Sweeney Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer Adapted and directed by Jon Ludwig Based on the classic television special Stan the Lovesick Snowman Adapted and directed by Jon Ludwig Weather Rocks! 5 dr. seuss s the cat in the hat Dr. Seuss s The Cat in the Hat made its Center for Puppetry Arts debut June 13-July 28. The story featured everyone s favorite moments with Sally and her brother, their pet Fish, Thing 1 and Thing 2 and, of course, the story s namesake, that famous Cat in the red and white striped hat! Zany fun and adventures delighted audiences in this memorable tale! The classic children s book was originally adapted and directed by Katie Mitchell for the National Theatre of Great Britain and was a smash hit in London. The Center for Puppetry Arts was thrilled to realize this delightfully funny story through puppetry. Under the direction of Jon Ludwig, the Center s team diligently worked to create the puppets, scenery and props from scratch, faithfully adhering to the iconic Seuss style. Dr. Seuss s The Cat in the Hat featured tabletop puppetry, animation, and a whole bag of tricks to pull off the Cat s daring feats. Performing the familiar characters were puppeteers Dolph Amick, Aaron Gotlieb, Reay Kaplan, Rudy Roushdi, Amy Sweeney, and Tim Sweeney. xperimental puppetry theater (xpt) Sponsored by Turner Voices, XPT is a longrunning Center program that invites professional and emerging artists to explore and experiment by creating original puppet theater for adult audiences. Artists submit their innovative ideas and, once chosen, work with other XPT participants of various artistic backgrounds and talents to bring their vision to life. After three intense months of collaboration and creation, the teams present their work onstage for one weekend only. Every performance concludes with a talkback between the audience and the artists. Show sponsored by: Dr. Seuss s The Cat in the Hat is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI). With a focus on the challenges of childhood obesity and a grant from Aetna, the Center began work on Camp Whachyawannado, an interactive puppet show that encourages children to lead an active life. DL Puppeteer and Teaching Artist Jeffrey Zwartjes led the project. The Center partnered with Emory University s Rollins School of Public Health to create an educator guide based on national standards in the areas of health, nutrition, and physical activity. Graduate student Emily D Iorio wrote preand post-classroom activities for the guide as well as served as a consultant for the performance script. A free, recorded classroom module on physical activity was also developed for this project and made available on the Center s website and Vimeo channel. Camp Whachyawannado was piloted to schools in the fall of 2014 and is one of more than 20 Distance Learning programs and performances offered by the Center. 11 year two! distance learning and texas a&m university collaboration: folding up! a stem-based puppet show The Center s Distance Learning Program continued its second year of work with Texas A & M University Dept. of Mechanical Engineering thanks to a four year grant from the National Science Foundation. The second year of the grant focused on providing scholarship-based performances to underrepresented audiences in schools across the country. Twenty scholarships were granted to over nd-5th grade students in South Carolina, Georgia, Wisconsin, Alabama, Texas, New York, Wyoming, Indiana, New Hampshire, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, and Tennessee. In addition, Dr. Gregg van Laningham, puppeteer and scientist (PhD Materials Science, Georgia Institute of Technology) created a recorded module as a free resource for teachers to use in the classroom. This module introduces some of the performance s origami-inspired characters and STEM concepts. This program helped to support our school focus. It was very cross curricular -- science, math, communications, art, and technology were all included. ~ 2nd grade teacher, Pennsylvania They liked going on the (virtual) field trip to Texas A&M. (The students) didn t realize that there were opportunities after college, such as grad school. ~ 3rd/4th grade teacher, Wisconsin Center for Puppetry Arts pnc fairfax connection center The Center continued another year of work with PNC at the PNC Fairfax Connection Center in Cleveland, Ohio. Pre-K, four and five year olds, and intergenerational audiences from the community participated in Distance Learning programs such as The Gingerbread Boy, The Little Red Hen & the Grain of Wheat, Anansi the Spider: a West African Folktale, Butterflies, and Dinosaurs. Storytelling, puppet shows, and puppetmaking made this a favorite activity at the PNC Fairfax Connection Center. Center for Puppetry Arts 10

13 camp kudzu Each summer Jeff Domke, the Center s Education Program Coordinator, is an Artist-in-Residence at Camp Kudzu, which provides education, recreation, and peer networking programs for Georgia children living with Type 1 diabetes. Domke conducts puppetry workshops on the history, construction, and manipulation of several puppet styles, techniques, and forms. Each workshop offers an opportunity for the camper to create a unique puppet that allows the camper to learn, grow, and explore through puppetry. Workshops also promote a high self-esteem and a sense of being in control an important trait to encourage for these campers as one of the hallmarks of diabetes and other serious illnesses is that children often feel a lack of control over their environments and lives. In the summer of 2013, Domke worked with the Camp Kudzu kids to help them create puppets and puppet shows based on Turkish shadow puppetry traditions. Center for Puppetry Arts outreach programming The Center for Puppetry Arts offers a variety of workshops and residencies to allow learners of all ages (preschool through adult) and all experience levels (from beginner to professional) to explore and enjoy the art of puppetry. Workshops for school-age children support educational standards and enhance classroom learning, and all workshops can be customized for any lesson plan and any audience! Popular workshop offerings include Artist-in- Residence Experience, Discovering Puppetry in Other Cultures (An International Puppet Presentation), Preschool Puppetry Playshop, Corporate Puppet-and-Team Building Workshop, Puppet Factory, Puppet Invention Workshop, Puppet Manipulation 101 and Puppetry as Theatre Art. 14 volunteer & internship programs volunteer program The contingent of Center volunteers and interns made a considerable impact, both at the Center and all over the community. Over the year, 102 volunteers and 17 interns gave approximately 5,248 hours of their valuable time spread out among every department. For the third year in a row, there has been an increase in volunteer participation, up 40.3% from the previous year. According to IndependentSector.org, the monetary value of volunteers time in Georgia is $22.25 an hour; this estimate helps us to quantify the value that volunteers provide. At this rate, our volunteers and interns impacted our organization by $116,768! Beyond the numbers, the Center s volunteer force is comprised of enthusiastic individuals who are passionate about our mission and the patrons we serve. Some volunteer accomplishments include: assembling thousands of puppet kits; ushering hundreds of shows; greeting museum patrons throughout the year; giving museum tours; volunteering at special events such as Patron Parties, Smithsonian Museum Day and World Puppetry Day; and assisting with a lot of administrative everyday activities. On top of these accomplishments, the volunteers have also helped earn $6,750 for the Center s physical fitness programming through the Atlanta Track Club s Adopt-a-Mile Marathon program. Other noteworthy accomplishments include the addition of three new internships (Film Series, Library/Archives, and Directing) and the 2nd annual Volunteer Appreciation Party. This year we honored 26 individuals who each volunteered 25 hours or more, our Volunteers of the Year, and our Staff Supervisor of the year, Aretta Baumgartner (Education Director).
