1 A distance education teaching certificate curriculum and training was offered for faculty prior to the Fall semester starting in Fall (Standard III.A.5.a) (13) The Online Teaching Certificate Program (OTCP) was developed by the Distance COS (DECOS) Senate subcommittee in the spring of 2011 to respond to the need created by COSTA and COSAFA master agreements requiring that instructors have pedagogical and technical training (certification) before being able to teach an online class as COS. The program is free and open to adjunct and full-time faculty. It is taught entirely online using the Blackboard platform. The curriculum was developed by a DECOS task force and implemented by the Distance Education Coordinator (DEC). The DEC, who holds a Ph.D. in Higher Education with a cognate in college teaching, developed the program based on the DECOS curriculum and facilitates the program. Since its inception, there have been six OTCP cohorts: Summer 2011; Fall 2011; Spring 2012; Summer 2012; Fall 2012; and Spring The Fall 2013 cohort is currently engaged in the program. The total number of graduates since the first cohort is 54. 3 OTCP Objectives for the Four Instructional Modules Achievement of the OTCP objectives will lead to the outcome that an individual will be well-prepared to begin teaching online using effective course quality elements and demonstrating compliance related to legal and ethical issues of online teaching. Module I Objectives This module is an introduction to the fundamentals and philosophy of teaching online. It will cover important aspects including technological and communication skills, suggested practices for teaching online, and regulations governing online teaching and learning. When you have completed the module, you should be able to do the following: 1. identify technical and learning skills necessary for online learning. 2. identify technical and teaching skills necessary for online learning. 3. describe and practice synchronous and asynchronous communication skills.
4 4. compare and contrast face-to-face and distance education delivery and philosophy. 5. describe suggested practices in distance education. 6. analyze and apply California regulations for distance education 7. apply learning theory to online teaching strategies. 8. modify content representation and incorporate multiple methods of engagement and expression (assessment), for multiple learning styles. 9. apply the theories related to building online communities. 10. construct a research-based, online teaching framework. 11. build a basic Blackboard course shell Module II Objectives This module is an introduction to legal and ethical issues related to online teaching and learning. 1. Explain an instructor's responsibility in connection to copyright and fair use of instructional materials for the online classroom. 2. Select digital instructional materials that meet all the legal requirements for online accessibility. 3. Explain your responsibilities related to confidentiality and privacy. 4. Develop a strategy that promotes academic integrity and explores the implications of plagiarism. 5. Discuss the Digital Divide. Module III Objectives This module will familiarize participants with some technology tools available for online teaching. 1. Examine and evaluate selected Bb tools. 2. Locate and evaluate a tool that will benefit you in teaching your particular discipline or field. 3. Develop your thoughts about integrating technology into your online teaching. Module IV Objectives
5 Develop an online course structure in keeping with the Rubric for Online Instruction (Chico State) within a Bb course shell. OTCP Regulations Test California regulations require that online instructors initiate regular and effective contact with online students over the duration of the course. Regular and effective contact involves the use of which of the following technologies? Announcements in the course management system Discussion Boards All of the above Title 5 requires that an institutions Curriculum Committee separately approve distance education courses. Closed-captioning must be available for students who need it when you require students to view a video. Name two things that you have to consider when evaluating the accessibility of a website.
6 The ACCJC does not address issues related to distance education when determining the accreditation status of an institution. What is the major issue related to the Higher Education Act that concerns distance education? Explain your understanding of our regular and effective contact policy here at COS. Include specific elements of the policy. You must comply with U.S. copyright law when providing your online students with instructional materials under copyright.
