2 NOSCA is home of... A national advocacy campaign to galvanize and mobilize school counselors to own the turf of college and career readiness counseling and take the lead in establishing a college-going culture in their schools, districts, and communities.
3 Session Description In this session school counselors will learn how to use the transformative process to promote equity in student outcomes when using the NOSCA Eight Components of College and Career Readiness Counseling. School counselors will learn to use the Eight Components publication as a tool to promote college and career readiness.
4 Learning Outcomes: I. Learn how the transformative process impacts the implementation of the Eight Components to gain equitable college and career outcomes. II. Learn to use tools to enhance delivery of the eight components. III. Learn use multi-level interventions for College and Career Readiness Counseling.
5 College & Careers in America: Where Do We Stand? Once first in the world, America now ranks 10 th in the percentage of young adults with a college degree. For the first time in our history, the current generation of college-age Americans will be less educated than their parents generation unless things change quickly. In the current recession, unemployment rates are twice as high for those with just a high school diploma (10.8%) compared to those with a bachelor's degree or higher (4.9%). In just ten years, more than 60% of all new jobs will require a college education. Source: Complete College America

10 Activity A Beliefs that Close Doors 1. We know all students are not going to college so we should not create false hopes by trying to build their aspirations. 2. Creating a college-going culture for all students is a nice idea but is not realistic. 3. Some students have so many personal problems and family pressures that we should not burden them with the college-going process. 5. AP, IB and other rigorous courses are for the most academically talented students putting non-traditional students in these courses will result in a watered down curriculum. 7. School budgets and resources cannot support a culture and climate of all students college and career ready. 4. School personnel face so many pressures and demands that it is difficult to expect them to focus on the needs and academic potential of traditionally underserved students. 6. The cost of college makes it impossible for underserved populations to consider going to college. 8. Parents who have not attended college do not encourage their children to take and complete rigorous courses in high school or middle school. What is the prevalence of these messages in your school? When do you think students begin to hear these kinds of messages?
11 The Turf is counseling that provides the guidance and support for all students to graduate from high school prepared for college. The TURF
12 College and Career Ready Is ready for COLLEGE and ready for CAREER the same thing? With respect to the knowledge and skills in English and mathematics expected by employers and postsecondary faculty, the answer is yes. College Career Source: Achieve, Inc.
13 What is College and Career Ready? According to the Southern Regional Education Board College Ready means a high school graduate has the reading, writing and math knowledge and skills to qualify for and succeed in entry-level, credit bearing, college-degree courses with out the need for remedial classes. Career Ready means that high school graduates can read, comprehend, interpret and analyze complex technical materials, can use mathematics to solve problems in the workplace, and can pass a state-approved industry certificate or licensure exam in their field. 16 College and Career Readiness Counseling A Systemic K-12 Approach Elementary School To create early awareness, knowledge and skills that lay the foundation for academic rigor and social development necessary for college and career readiness. Middle School To create opportunities to explore and deepen college and career knowledge and skills necessary for academic planning and goal setting. High School To create access to college and career pathways that promote full implementation of personal goals that ensure the widest range of future life options.

18 The Culturally Competent School Counselor Awareness of self and others (individual and group) life realities, world views, and experiences in an inequitable society. I am aware of how my own group membership(s) (race/ethnicity, gender, disability, socio-economic status, nationality, and/or religion) can impact my group and other groups, especially groups that are traditionally underrepresented in college and career readiness. Knowledge of self and others (individual and group) history, culture, norms and, values. I understand and can acknowledge how diverse student groups and their families face systemic barriers in schools and society.
19 The Culturally Competent School Counselor Skills that foster genuine communication and understanding necessary to build authentic and respectful relationships. I can match my communication style and interactions to meet the needs of the diverse groups that I work with in ways that facilitate trust and understanding. Action that promotes equity by: I can provide leadership for open and authentic dialogue. I can advocate against systemic and institutional barriers. I can collaborate for shared outcomes that advantage all students.
