Child Health and Nutrition (MIH-G04) Spring 2010 Credits 6 ECTS Objectives To provide the students with knowledge on the determinants and global epidemiology of child health and to equip them with skills to plan, implement and assess interventions to promote child health in various environments. Content Historical and regional development in the social status of children Patterns of normal childhood growth and development The UN declaration and convention of children s rights Other major international treaties to promote child well-being Trends in global and regional distribution of child well-being and ill health Burden of globally most important childhood communicable and non-communicable diseases Role of nutrition and nutritional disorders in child health and development The burden of traffic injuries and other trauma Impact of wars and other conflicts on child health The epidemiology of and management strategies against child labor and abuse Main child health interventions and intervention strategies Modes of Study Lectures 21h, tutorials (Problem Based Learning) 16h, individual study between the tutorials 42h, group works 10h, reading the required literature 88h, exam 3h. Total SIT (student investment time) 180h. Requirements for completion Active participation in problem based learning exercises, participation in and completion of group exercises, passing exam. Evaluation Fail/pass on a scale 1-5. The grade is given by the teacher responsible for the course, based on a written exam. Organization Responsible University of Tampere Medical School Person in Charge Professor Reijo Salmela Language English Time Spring 2010, Period III, , weeks 2-9 Attendance Attendance is open for all university of Tampere students but limited to 32 students. If more students wish to take the course, preference is given to degree students in health sciences and others will be accepted in the order of registration. The course will be cancelled if less than 8 students register to participate in it.
