1 CORBM 1 Florida Keys AHEC Tobacco Training and Cessation Project Second Trimester Report (January 1 March 31, 2008) I. Tobacco Training Activities Activity Discussion 1

2 CORBM 2 Description of Training We are currently providing 3 training programs for health care professionals. The outlines are Programs attached: 1) One Hour Provider Training Description: This module uses text, picture and graphic slides giving an overview of smoking in the US, nicotine addiction, nicotine replacement therapies, and how to do a brief intervention with smokers (5 As, 5Rs). Also included is an overview of the FKAHEC cessation program and the logistics of referring patients. Goal: The primary goal of this presentation is to help the provider develop an understanding of today s paradigm of smoking cessation including the brief intervention and to start the referral process of patients to the smoking cessation program. Objectives: As a result of this training participants will be able to: 1. Demonstrate an understanding of the severity of the tobacco problem as it exists today. 2. Discuss nicotine addiction and related therapies. 3. Demonstrate an understanding of the brief intervention 4. Refer patients to the FKAHEC program. 2) Two hour Provider Training Description: This module uses text, picture and graphic slides giving an overview as described above. Additionally, this module introduces the Quit Smoking Now program, which uses components of the Big Bend AHEC program, the UMDNJ program and the American Lung Association program (facilitator guide and participant workbook attached). These components are used to teach the basics of smoking cessation counseling. It is directed toward health care providers who want to provide a more comprehensive intervention than that described in the One Hour program. Goal: The primary goal of this presentation is to help the provider develop an understanding of smoking cessation and present the tools necessary to provide counseling. Objectives: As a result of this training the participants will be able to: 1. Achieve the objectives of the One Hour Program. 2. Additionally, the participant will be able to demonstrate an understanding of a counseling session with a smoker who wants to quit. 3) Four Hour Provider Training Description: This module uses the text, picture and graphic slides as described above. Additionally, participants are given detailed instructions on how to facilitate a Quit Smoking Now 6-week group program. Goal: The primary goal of this presentation is to give the participant the necessary tools to become a group facilitator under the auspices and direction of the Florida Keys AHEC. Objectives: As a result of this training, participants will be able to: 1. Achieve the objectives stated above. 2. Additionally, lead a 6-week group program according to the guide presented. *Additional live programs scheduled for last reporting period. (Motivational Interviewing, Complementary Approached and Tobacco Dependence) 2

3 CORBM 3 Health Professions Schools Participating in Clinical Training University of Miami School of Medicine 3 rd year Family Medicine Clerkship Students Student Run Health Fairs (DOCS), mainly 1 st and 2 nd year UM medical students Students will provide on-site screenings at preceptor sites starting in last reporting period. Florida Keys Community College Nursing Number of Health Professions Students Trained by Discipline Medicine: 4 Nursing: 23 Total Number of Health Professions Students and Hours Trained in Monroe County: 23 students 88 hours of training FKCC Nursing School to receive additional training on MI in June All Students to receive tobacco dependence training in next school year. The program could not be implemented in all classes this year as curriculum was set. (Curricula provided last quarter) Total Number of Schools in Monroe County: 5 Number of school-age youth trained on tobacco prevention in Monroe County They re Rich, You re Dead 7 programs were conducted at 5 schools; 610 youth and 15 teachers provided with a 1 hour program in tobacco prevention instruction, totaling 625 contact hours Other Programs 5 programs were conducted at 5 schools; 407 youth and 39 teachers provided with a 1 hour program in tobacco prevention instruction, totaling 416 contact hours TOTALS: 12 programs; 1017 youth reached; 39 teachers; 1041 contact hours 4
