2 AAP RFC Application Personal Statement Technology Representative Edward Wei, MD PGY3 Tufts Medical Center Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Residency Program I entered the world of PM&R through my love of biomechanics as well as my fascination with technology in medicine. In medical school, I found that the nerves, muscles, and bones in the human body were similar to the electrical, elastic and mechanical systems I studied as an undergraduate. My interest in musculoskeletal and neurological systems helped steer me towards physical medicine and rehabilitation. There are so many different aspects of PM&R that are influenced by the break-neck pace of technological innovations. Subdural spinal cord implants that mimic mechanical, electric, and chemical properties of surrounding tissue may one day revolutionize spinal cord injured patients. Magnetically guided ultrasound scanners can greatly decrease the difficulty curve in mastering ultrasound guided injections while increasing safety and success rates. These are the kinds of new innovations that I would like to share with others. I would like to create a new section under the Residents section on the AAP website for reviewing emerging new technology in the field of physiatry. Ideally, any resident or fellow would be able to submit articles of interest for review and discussion in this section. The funny thing is, applying for this position through the AAP website has re-affirmed for me the importance of keeping websites and online information accurate, up to date, and secure. As I intuitively followed the link under the Resident s section titled Apply online now, I was lead to a broken hyperlink. As it turned out, the link was missing a colon and therefore redirecting browsers to a nonexistent DNS server. As the RFC Technology Representative, I will work closely with the physiatry.org webmaster to ensure that residents and fellows have quick and easy access to the information that they need. As a detail-oriented person, I work fastidiously on all projects that I am involved with; however, I never lose perspective of the whole. With the website, I will always be open to any constructive suggestions for improvement. By keeping the Resident portion of the AAP website up to date, I hope to help make the experience of visiting this information hub a useful and easily accessible one. I look forward to working with the residents and fellows of the AAP Council and to serving my fellow physiatrists.

This was an athletic event, sponsored by the Pediatric Rehabilitation Department of JFK s Johnson Rehabilitation Institute and the Tri-State Wheelchair Athletic Association, in which adult and junior athletes were qualifying for the national and international Paralympic Games Baltimore Rescue Mission Clinic, Volunteer Baltimore, MA Helped run a weekly free clinic serving homeless men and women in Baltimore.
