Adapt-N Guided Hands-on Exercise Pointers: Use Mozilla Firefox as your browser. Do not use the BACK button. Make sure to input your locations as 2012 locations (not 2013). Make sure to input a Season End Date the date through which the simulation runs (usually the sidedress date), when running retrospective runs, as in this exercise. If the system should hang up or otherwise malfunction, please log out, and log back into your account. We apologize in advance for any potential malfunctions that may occur due to the much higher than usual user volume. Exercise: We will generate N rate recommendations for a location in New York or Iowa, or you can use your own location. We will evaluate various management scenarios and interpret the results. 1. Go to Click "Adapt-N Sign in". 2. Log In using your Username and Password (or temporary account info provided). You will now be in the Manage Locations tab. 3. Set up a New Location pick your option: a. Region: Northeast; season: 2012; location name: CentralNY). Type in the location coordinates (lat ; long ). b. Region: Iowa; season: 2012; location name: NorthwestIA). Type in the location coordinates (lat ; long ). c. Alternative: Set up your own location of choice, and give it an appropriate name. Cornell Adapt-N Project Harold van Es, Jeff Melkonian, Bianca Moebius-Clune, Art DeGaetano, Laura Joseph

Run 1 While in the Manage Locations tab, Select your Location (2012, CentralNY). Enter the following: Tab Entry Menu Data Entry Mineral Season End Date June 25, 2012 (time of sidedress) Nitrogen/Cultivar Tab Nitrogen Fertilizer Applications for this Select Fertilizer Practice applied starter (fertilizer banded with seed) growing season Select Starter monoammonium phosphate amount in lb N/acre 30 Placement depth 2-4 Crop Information Corn Variety Field Corn Select Corn Cultivar For NE: Grains: medium- latematurity For IA: Grains: 116 d crm Enter planting date April 29, 2012 Select Expected Harvest 30,000 plants/acre Populations Expected Yield (grain) bushels/acre Soil/Tillage Tab Soil Information Select Soil Texture Silt loam Rooting Depth (inches) inches Select Slope less than 3% Select Soil Test Information There was a soil test in the last 3 years enter sample depth in inches 12 enter soil organic matter in % 2.6 Tillage System Information Select Tillage System Conservation tillage; 50% residue Manure/Rotations Tab Manure N Applications Select Manure Application manure not applied N from Sod Rotation Select Sod Application sod not applied Previous crop Select previous crop grain corn Click "Submit" button in green bottom bar when all info has been entered. Wait for about 10 seconds while your data are uploaded to server, high resolution climate data are accessed, and calculations are made by model. You will then get a results page. Record the Sidedress N Recommendation on the Results Sheet. Click on Full Reports and Graphs, interpret graphs and enter information on results sheet for the June 25 date.

Run 2: Higher OM content Under Soil/Tillage, change the soil organic matter content to 5%, submit again and enter results on sheet. (You do not need to reload via Manage Locations. You can simply go to Soil/Tillage and rerun!) Run 3: Manure Application Under Soil/Tillage, change the soil organic matter content back to 2.6%, and add manure: Manure/Rotations Tab Manure N Application manure applied in 2012 Date applied April 16, injected immediately manure added (gal/acre) ammonium N analysis (lbs/1000 gals) 9.5 organic N analysis (lbs/1000 gals) 8.3 % manure solids 6% Submit again and enter results on sheet. Run 4: Rotation from Sod For Northeast locations: Delete manure application, and enter N from Sod Application to sod terminated in 2011, date October 20, % legume 26-50%, surface killed. Submit and enter results on sheet. For Iowa locations: Delete manure application, and enter N from Sod Application to sod terminated in 2012, date April 1, % legume 26-50%, surface killed. Submit and enter results on sheet. Wet Conditions Under the irrigation Tab, add 2 inches of irrigation on May 25, May 30, May 31, June 2, and June , and 1.5 inches on June 15, We are now simulating wetter late spring weather conditions. Do the following runs with these wet conditions: Run 5: Wet conditions Delete the sod application from above (so the inputs are as in Run 1, except for higher precipitation input), run and enter results on sheet. Run 6: Wet conditions and higher OM Under Soil/Tillage, change the soil organic matter content to 5%, run again and enter results on sheet.

Run 7: Wet conditions and manure Under Soil/Tillage, change the soil organic matter content back to 2.6%, and add manure: Manure/Rotations Tab Manure N Application manure applied in 2012 Date applied April 16, injected immediately manure added (gal/acre) ammonium N analysis (lbs/1000 gals) 9.5 organic N analysis (lbs/1000 gals) 8.3 % manure solids 6% Submit again and enter results on sheet. Run 8: Wet conditions and sod For Northeast locations: Delete manure application, and enter N from Sod Application to sod terminated in 2011, date October 20, % legume 26-50%, surface killed. Submit and enter results on sheet. For Iowa locations: Delete manure application, and enter N from Sod Application to sod terminated in 2012, date April 1, % legume 26-50%, surface killed. Submit and enter results on sheet. Run 9: Wet conditions and late planting Change Sod Rotation back to sod not applied. Change the planting date to June 5, 2012, and change Expected Yield to (grain) bushels/acre. Submit and enter results on sheet. Run 10: Wet conditions, late planting, and preplant N application Under Mineral Nitrogen/Cultivar, add anhydrous ammonia as a preplant application (160 lb/ac, anhydrous ammonia, placement depth at 8-10, on 6/4). Submit and enter results on sheet. Run 11: Wet conditions, early planting, and preplant N application Change planting date back to 4/29, and the expected yield back to bushels/acre. Change the date for the preplant application from 6/4 to 4/25 (anhydrous ammonia, 160 lb/ac, placement depth at 8-10 ). Submit and enter results on sheet. Run 12: Wet conditions, early planting, preplant N application, and coarse soil Under Soil/Tillage, change the soil texture class to Sandy Loam. Keep rooting depth at inches. Submit and enter results on sheet. Run 13: Wet conditions, late planting, preplant N application, and fine soil Under Soil/Tillage, change the soil texture class to Silty Clay. Keep rooting depth at inches. Submit and enter results on sheet.

Examine results, discuss with your colleagues. Which factors had large impacts? Why? Consider: o Rainfall (1 vs. 5) o Organic matter inputs and soil organic matter (1-4) o Organic matter and rainfall interactions (1-8) o Texture and weather (11-13) o Interactions of rainfall with early N availability (5 vs. 7, 8, 11) o Planting date and weather interactions (10 vs. 11) Consider the importance of data input quality. Just to try it out: 1. Modify a location to create a NEW LOCATION To set up a new location based on a location already in the system, do the following: Go to the Manage Locations tab, select Modify Locations, Growing Season: 2012, Action: Copy Location and select CentralNY, and type in a new name and click Submit. Then select Modify Locations, Growing Season: 2012, Action: Edit location: Latitude/Longitude, and enter the new coordinates save update. Your new location is now in the system, ready for simulations 2. Experiment with any other scenarios or locations you are curious about. Discuss with your colleagues.
