About this Certificate Program: In many organizations inventories are the largest single asset. If the managers who have responsibility for overseeing these critical resources have state-of-the-art information and techniques, they can save an organization time, money and make a positive impact on customer service and the bottom line. The Supply Chain and Logistics Management Certificate Program offers a comprehensive management development program for professionals involved in inventory management, purchasing, warehousing or transportation. A materials manager who completes six (6) seminars within a three-year period will receive a certificate of completion from The University of Alabama College of Continuing Studies. To eliminate these non-value adding activities and assets, manufacturers must take a channel wide perspective i.e., they need to manage inventory flows regardless of ownership. Only then can costs be contained and customer service be enhanced. This course will focus on integrating the output of a firm s logistics effort (customer service) with other components of the marketing mix, so that customer satisfaction can be maximized and differential, competitive advantage is achieved at all levels in the supply chain. The more skillful your purchasing people are, the better your organization s chances are for turning a profit. Newly appointed as well as experienced buyers can learn these important skills in this seminar, making them some of your organization s most valuable assets. This fast-paced, two-day seminar is packed with useful information, from the basics of purchasing to the finest points of shaving costs. Do you dread the thought of constructing a Statement of Work or specifications? If you are thinking about questions like these, chances are you are not alone. All too often, buyers and procurement specialists rely on luck and wishful thinking to carry them through the maneuvering of writing a contract. Reflect the work of your department in a positive light. 6

7 Elective Sessions (Six Seminars) MANAGING GLOBAL FREIGHT DISTRIBUTION USING NEW STRATEGIES & TACTICS Traffic Management In today s economy, every company is, or soon will be, engaged in trade outside the 48 contiguous United States. It is important to understand the differences involved in shipping or receiving goods that must be moved by means other than the continental rail system or the interstate highway system. Each company needs to have the knowledge necessary to use every tool available to ship and receive its freight while weaving the broader logistics concepts into it. We will concentrate on the issues which are important to the group and will use examples pertinent to the industries represented in each seminar. We will explore packaging and transportation options appropriate for each industry s type or category of product. We will cover international carriage and documentation considerations from both import and export points of view. In a greatly expanded section on e-logistics, we will look at every aspect of how the internet has changed the environment across the supply chain. Attend MANAGING GLOBAL FREIGHT DISTRIBUTION USING NEW STRATEGIES & TACTICS, and learn how to: 1. Assemble a global freight team from within the organization. 2. Understand the costs and issues with outsourcing (3PLs, Freight Payment, etc.). 3. Dealing with Letters of Credit and other financial instruments. 4. Computerizing the transportation and distribution functions. 5. Implementing effective key performance indicators and performance measures. MANAGING PRICE, COST & POTENTIAL INCREASE Purchasing Management Today, purchasing, procurement, contracting, and supply management professionals must be the most informed groups in the company to combat potential cost increases. Worldwide competitive pressures require a greater contribution from the purchasing and supply function and suppliers to improve the organization s relative position on price and cost. Managing Price, Cost & Potential Increases is a highly concentrated seminar that discusses price, cost, and total value analysis theories in the choice of goods and services those which you many have purchased in the past and those you are considering for the future. The comprehensive material presented in Managing Price, Cost & Potential Increases is practical and job-specific as well as relatively easy to apply. Throughout the program you will work out challenging situations through various exercises under the tutelage of your instructor. Attend MANAGING PRICE, COST & POTENTIAL INCREASE, and learn how to: 1. Realize the importance of price-cost information sources and references. 2. Identify the best buy for a given purchase through price and cost investigation. 3. Negotiate total cost of ownership more effectively with suppliers and contractors. 4. Use forecasting and spend analysis techniques to better understand future market conditions. 5. Gain a working knowledge of the methods, techniques, and formulas for analyzing purchasing decisions. 7

8 Elective Sessions (Six Seminars) STRATEGIC PURCHASING & SUPPLY MANAGEMENT TECHNIQUES Purchasing Management Purchasing, a vital element of the company, must be able to function at top efficiency at all times. To do so, there must be flexibility and proper organization. Each purchasing manager must be able to review the purchasing function objectively and determine whether its current structure and system of operation fills the needs of the company as well as the needs of purchasing. In such an analysis, matters like purchasing policies, job descriptions, operational procedures, and departmental structure must be considered with care. The new breed of purchasing professionals has added dimensions to the responsibilities of physical supply management that will continue to bring their organizations into the 21st century. Strategic Purchasing & Supply Management will address these critical management concerns and will provide practical techniques and vital information to enhance the purchasing function s contribution to your organization s bottom line. Attend STRATEGIC PURCHASING & SUPPLY MANAGEMENT TECHNIQUES, and learn how to: 1. Examine purchasing organizational concepts, personnel training and educational factors, and purchasing job descriptions. 2. Prepare plans, set goals and objectives for contribution to the bottom line and cost effectiveness. 3. Decide what sourcing strategies and expectations can be used to enhance supplier quality and productivity and optimize the supply base. 4. Maintain cooperative relationships with suppliers in order to realize maximum cost efficiencies and continuity of service. 5. Prepare yourself for the use of specialized purchase instruments and their contracting alternatives in the contracting process. USING RFID & BAR CODES TO TRACK EVERYTHING Materials Management If you are looking for practical ways of integrating bar coding, RFID, or other automatic identification into your organization, this seminar is a must. Bar Coding and RFID technologies are ways to gather information with minimum human involvement providing accurate and rapid collection and dissemination of data through Automatic Data Capture (ADC). Instituting ADC allows you to know exactly what you have and where it is at all times. Therefore, the information supplied by Bar Code/ RFID systems makes it possible to operate in an almost Paperless environment, even in conjunction with Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) and the Internet. Attend USING RFID & BAR CODES TO TRACK EVERYTHING, and learn how to: 1. Implement tools to support tracking and tracing of containers, parts, tools, WIP, finished and raw materials, labor, and equipment. 2. Determine whether RFID, Bar Code and other technologies will provide tactical solutions to streamline processes and operations. 3. Help justify implementation costs and ROI. 4. Review case studies and real world scenarios. 5. Optimize the value of supply chain systems such as TMS, WMS, OMS, and other applications with the integration of RFID, Bar Codes, and Automatic Data Capture. 8
