PATHWAYS TO KNOWLEDGE NURSE EDUCATOR CONFERENCE APRIL 17, 2015 SUMMARY REPORT
The Pathways to Knowledge Nurse Educator Conference is a regional conference organized by the Central Virginia Nursing Staff Development Organization (CVNSDO). Congruent with the Association of Nursing Professional Development (ANPD), our purpose is to provide continuing education and networking opportunities to support the unique needs of Nursing Professional Development Specialists, as well as other educators in healthcare.
This year, over 100 nurse educators made their way to Richmond s Marriott West Hotel for CVNSDO s annual Pathways to Knowledge Conference. This proved to be yet another year of great teaching, and networking with colleagues from throughout Virginia, and West Virginia. Participants who attended came from Carilion Clinic Roanoke, Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, Charleston Area Medical Center, Children s Hospital of the King s Daughters, Children s Hospital of Richmond at VCU, CJW Medical Center, Germanna Community College, HCA Capital Division, Henrico Doctors Hospital, Martha Jefferson Hospital, Mary Immaculate Hospital, Maryview Medical Center, Mary Washington Hospital, McGuire VA Medical Center, Memorial Regional Medical Center, Parham Doctors Hospital, Sentara Healthcare, Sheltering Arms Physical Rehabilitation Center, Southside Virginia Community College, Southside Regional Medical Center Professional Schools, St. Francis Medical Center, St. Mary s Hospital, UVA Medical Center, VCU Medical Center.
This year s theme was Precepting: Developing an Effective Workforce The day was highly practical and interactive as it covered: Compassion Fatigue and its consequences on self, patient safety and learning. The goals of precepting, and analyzing how current reality impacts those goals. The four elements in the Relationship Based Precepting Model. Must have" program elements to develop a culture of learning. How mindfulness can improve learning and cognitive function, and its application at work.
Our guest faculty was Traci Hanlon, MN, RN from Portland, Oregon. Traci is a staff development specialist with Creative Health Care Management. She has a background in nursing education and management in various clinical specialties. She is a popular speaker and consultant, and is best known for helping organizations develop transformative orientation, preceptor, leadership and health work environment programs.
Education and Networking
Thoughts & takeaways from the day Compassion fatigue issues Develop a precepting / on boarding committee Using a team approach to precepting Provide resiliency training
Thoughts & takeaways from the day Update our preceptor workshop to include the human component of education. More routine communication between preceptor, preceptee and educator. Recognize the physiologic basis for concepts such as belonging, etc. Monitor for compassion fatigue

Thoughts & takeaways from the day Look at structure vs. process. Change our way of making assignments for preceptors and orientees. Use a holistic approach to preceptor preparation. As an educator, how can I create, what can I do, how can I be to create a safe and healthy place for learning? Engage students and faculty in this selfreflection.
Thoughts & takeaways from the day Make sure preceptors have input choosing patient assignments Discuss with preceptors Discuss with preceptors and Clinical Team Leaders the idea of taking a full load and transitioning the preceptor in front to the orientee in front. Mindfulness an important concept I need to learn more about. Time management is often a bigger issue for new nurses than clinical skills. I should add time management discussions and exercises to my current internship.

Thoughts & takeaways from the day Develop a preceptor committee. Learn more about adaptive inquiry Teach Crucial Conversations to preceptors. Add Appreciative Inquiry into one of my four hour preceptor CE programs.
Thoughts & takeaways from the day Concepts for preceptor education are appropriate for charge nurse and other nurse leader training. Welcome baskets for new employees. Increase the positivity ratio on a day by day basis. Pro active in helping prevent compassion fatigue.
