Ecological design initially involves a site visit to determine the conditions that exist on the property. Next, conceptual work to devise a design program and a systematic approach to restoration is developed. Finally, it involves the conversion of collected data, design programs and recommended solutions into a comprehensive set of documents that can be utilized for bidding, implementation, stewardship and monitoring. Photo: Dan Stultz Professionally Managed Site Preparation and Installation Our site preparation and installation services include: Landscape Scale Removal of Invasive Species Utilizing the Latest in Low-Impact Equipment Targeted Removal of Selected Invasive Species in Sensitive Areas Herbicide Application: Boom Spraying and Spot Application Woody Invasive Clearing (Examples: Buckthorn and Honeysuckle) Timber Stand Improvement: Selective Removal to Improve Timber Vigor and Growth Potential Whether it s clearing a wetland from an infestation of Cattails or a woodland understory that has become overgrown with an impenetrable thicket of Buckthorn; from planting a shoreline with vigorous live plugs to seeding large expanses of open prairie; we will plan, schedule, communicate and implement your project with minimal impact to the site. Stewardship for a Healthy Environment Pizzo & Associates offers a wide range of natural area stewardship services, including: Licensed Herbicide Application Ecological Mowing (12" and Higher) Shoreline and Stream Bank Stabilization and Monitoring Canada Geese Control Rough Fish Control Algae Control The process of stewardship must begin immediately. If a natural area is not stewarded it will become overgrown with invasive and weedy species and will be aesthetically displeasing. The stewardship process involves monitoring the vegetation and reacting to changes as they occur through the growing season. A stewardship plan must be flexible. Natural areas are dynamic and Pizzo strives to account for the uniqueness of each individual site through proprietary adaptive management strategies that markedly increase the chances of success.

Safe and Effective Prescribed Fire Our prescribed fire services include: Prescribed Fire Permitting and Execution Experienced Urban Interface Practitioners Insured and Bonded Throughout the Midwest Areas from 1/3 acre up to 1,000 acres NWCG Trained Crews with Extensive Experience Four All-Terrain Vehicles with 100 Gallon Skid Units Six Heavy Duty 4x4 Trucks with 250 Gallon Skid Units The most sensational of all of our services is prescribed fire. Pizzo develops a site specific prescription, taking into account ecology, seasonality, prevailing winds, fuel types and relative humidity to determine the number of crew members and amount of equipment required to execute the fire safely and effectively. Our highly trained crews and supervisors have extensive practical experience working with federal, state & local agencies; each crewmember has completed S130/S190/S290 wildland fire training and is equipped with clothing and equipment that meet the National Wildfire Coordination Group (NWCG) standards. Consistently Better Plants from Our Nursery Our nursery services include: Contract Growing Remnant and Local Eco-Type Seeds Custom Seed Mixes Propagator of Rare Species Seeding Plan Review Wholesale Native: Trees, Shrubs, Perennials, Groundcovers and Vines Logistical Solutions Small Garden Design and Supply Our nursery encompasses 80 acres split between two sites in DeKalb County, Illinois. Immediately adjacent to our production facilities are two remnant wetlands, protected by conservation easements, that account for 75% of our acreage. These provide us ready access to local eco-type seed of a number of rare species typically unavailable in the marketplace. Our production facilities also include 5,000 square feet of greenhouse allowing for extended growing and targeted, date specific delivery. 14
