1 College of Nursing 1 Graduation Persistence Rates Matriculated Student Cohort Data Dictionary Variable Definitions: number: The total number of students who matriculated into the program for the academic year. Academic year: The academic year is defined as a fall semester, spring semester summer semester. Not all programs hold courses in the summer not all students attend in the summer. red internally: The total number of students who originally matriculated into the designated program, but later switched into another program at Upstate. : The total number of semesters that the Upstate Course Catalog allocates for a particular program Our catalog allows for the BS Nursing program students 2 years (4 semesters) to complete their BS degree 3 years (6 semesters) for the RN- MS program to complete the RN portion of their degree. The MS Post Master programs both allow for 2 years (4 semesters). 150% of time : The calculation of graduation persistency rates is based off 150% of the time is measured in semesters. : The total number of students that graduated on or before 150% of the time (Please note that in many cases the full time has not yet passed, as such, these numbers are incomplete). : The total number of students that withdrew from the program. On- Leave: The total number of students that have not completed the program or withdrawn/the total number of students from the cohort that remain enrolled in the program (Please note that semesters in which students have taken a leave are not counted against their semester totals). Graduation Percentage / Graduation %: The percent of students that have graduated from the program by the date that the data were extracted (Please note that Graduation Percentage is understated because the program length allocation has not yet been met for all programs. or / : The percent of students that have either graduated from the program OR continue to pursue the program within 150% of the program s time. 4 Performance on Licensing Certification Exams All Masters program graduates are eligible to sit for their national specialty certification exam. However, national certification is not required for licensure as a Nurse Practitioner in New York State, which is a disincentive for many graduates who often delay taking the national certification exam soon after graduation, if at all. This reduces the value of this as a measure of program achievement. It should be noted that the certification organizations do not separate test takers out by masters or post- master s, thus the results presented reflect the results from test- takers that may include first time certification exam test takers who may have graduated in the years prior. Graduates have been increasingly encouraged to get certified. In 2013, 67.6% of employers required certification within one year.
