Now Now, Next and the Future: IT, Big Data and other Implications for RIM
Forbes: The 3 I's Of Big Data Big Data is: Immediate in the sense that you need to do something about it now Intimidating what if you don t? Ill-defined what is it, anyway? Source: Forbes 2012 David Feinleib is the author of the Big Data Landscape For more information, contact him at [email protected]
What is Big Data? Clearing the Confusion IDC, 2011: Big Data Is Not the Created Content, nor Is It Even Its Consumption It Is the Analysis of All the Data Surrounding or Swirling Around It! IBM, 2012: This data comes from everywhere: sensors used to gather climate information, posts to social media sites, digital pictures and videos, purchase transaction records, and cell phone GPS signals to name a few. This data is big data.
Oracle Defines Big Data as Big data typically refers to the following types of data: Traditional enterprise data includes customer information from CRM systems, transactional ERP data, web store transactions, general ledger data. Machine-generated /sensor data includes Call Detail Records ( CDR ), weblogs, smart meters, manufacturing sensors, equipment logs (often referred to as digital exhaust), trading systems data. Social data includes customer feedback streams, micro-blogging sites like Twitter, social media platforms like Facebook
The Size of Everyday Data Source:
Decline in storage cost Source: From 1980 the cost of a GB was $193,000 To $.07 in 2009 Over the last 30 years, space per unit cost has doubled roughly every 14 months (increasing by an order of magnitude every 48 months).
Prioritization is an Issue Implications between business and IT Top 10 Business Priorities Top 10 Technology Priorities 1. Increasing Enterprise Growth 1. Analytics & Business Intelligence 2. Attracting and Retaining New Customers 2. Mobile Technologies 3. Reducing Enterprise Costs 3. Cloud Computing (SaaS, IaaS, PaaS) 4. Creating New Products & Services 4. Collaboration Technologies & Workflow 5. Delivering Operational Results 5. Virtualization 6. Improving Efficiency 6. Legacy Modernization 7. Improving Margins & Profitability 7. IT Management 8. Attracting & Retaining the Workforce 8. CRM 9. Improving Marketing and Sales Effectiveness 9. ERP Applications 10. Expanding into New Markets & Geographies 10. Security Implication: Where is RIM? Where is Information Governance? Source: Gartner 2012 Survey of 2,300 CIO s

Big Data Spans 5 Dimensions Volume, Velocity, Variety, Veracity, Value Volume: volumes, volumes, volumes 12 TB of Tweets daily Velocity: time-sensitive Catching fraud Variety: data of any type Video, voice, data, photos, etc Veracity: building trust 1 in 3 business leaders do not trust info. Value: leveraging & mining Business analytics, data mining
Future Now, Next and the Future: IT, Big Data and other Implications for RIM
By 2020, our Digital Universe will be 35 zettabytes compared to 1.8 zb in IDC & EMC attempts to put 1.8 zettabytes into some context: Every person in the United States tweeting 3 tweets per minute for 26,976 years nonstop Every person in the world having over 215 million high-resolution MRI scans per day Over 200 billion HD movies (each 2 hours in length) would take 1 person 47 million years to watch every movie 24 7 Now multiply by a factor of 35! -Significant!

Information Innovation: Innovation Key Initiative Overview Source: Gartner
Disruptions & Implications Another effect that must be examined is disruptive impact. How could a particular trend disrupt users' behaviors or expectations, industry or business models, IT organizations or IT markets? (Facebook vs. S For example, the trends toward cloud computing, big data and extreme information management are likely to disrupt many traditional approaches to data warehousing and data management, forcing a shift in how these activities are executed. Source: Gartner
Extreme Information Management Gartner: 12 Complementary Dimensions The report is available at Gartner Research explaining in detail the future of Extreme Information Management FLASHING RED LIGHT FOR RIM PROFESSIONALS!!!!!
Review How do the Trends effect us and our organizations? Now Cheap storage Lack of governance Proliferation of data creating instances Next Volume, Velocity, Variety, Veracity, Value Securing the Digital Universe Future Extreme Information Management New models are turning traditional IT upside down
Call to Action 1. Engage IT to share their challenges (we are on the same team). 2. Learn, learn, learn, to be conversationally intelligent about the developing trends & concepts 3. Engage your organization to solve problems 4. Move outside of the traditional RIM comfort zone into broader organizational participation 5. Create a daily Google If you are not developing your skills and competencies at a rate greater than or equal to your organizations rate of change, then there will be problems in the future
