Lesson 1 Age Range: Year 3 No. of Students: 30 Length of Session: 45 minutes Room/Location: Playground Learning Objectives: To introduce tag rugby To know how to tag another player To pass a rugby ball to another team member Resources: Cones, tags and rugby balls. Time Activity Teaching points Resources Saftey 7 mins 8 mins To know how to tag another player. Scarecrow Tag To pass a rugby ball to another team member. Passing backwards -Spilt each third of the netball courts into half so that you have 6 grids. Pupils then to get into groups of 5. 4 players out of 5 to have tags. The player without the tag is trying to stuck all the players with tags by pulling their tag off, holding it in the air and shouting tag. They must then return the tag to its owner. (To extend: All players have tags, when a players tag is taken they are the new tagger ) -Stretch out as a class. Children to get into pairs or groups of 3. Children to stand in a line, shoulder to shoulder, facing the same direction. Children to move slowly forwards, passing the ball backwards. They must ensure that the person with the ball is in front of the others. Discuss how the tag needs to be handed back to player and then held in the air when tagged, rather than dropped on the floor. In a game the ball would then have to be passed back. Ball carrier must keep the ball in both hands. Remind pupils that in rugby the ball must always be passed backwards, rather than forwards. Try to catch ball without slowing down. 24 tags and cones and eyes open. 6 balls Awareness of space.
1 To know how to tag another player. Tag Stretching. Children to stand on a marked out line on the playground. 5 volunteer children to be on. The children on the line must run to another marked out line, past the taggers without getting tagged. The taggers must tag as many children as possible to get them to join them. (To extend: Give everyone a ball to hold onto while running and ask them to score a try at the end) Discuss what has been learnt about tag rugby while stretching out. Q: How do we tag? Q: What do we need to remember when we tag? Q: What did you learn about passing? Make sure children are tagging correctly. -Remove tag. -Hold in the air and shout tag. -Return to the owner. Recap skills looked at in the lesson. 6 balls Awareness of space. and eyes open.
Lesson 2 Age Range: Year 3 No. of Students: 30 Length of Session: 45 minutes Room/Location: Playground Learning Objectives: To throw the ball backwards to another player To practice attacking and defending skills Resources: Cones, tags and rugby balls. Time Activity Teaching points Resources Saftey Moving with the ball. Teacher to have 6 cones in a row x4. Each house to stand at a row of cones. The children need to take it in turns to run to the first cone, balance the ball, run around the final cone, pick up the ball and run or pass the ball back. The second person then runs to the second cone and so on until all cones have been used twice. The ball can balance on its side or on its end. If the ball falls from the cone the child must return to balance it and then run round the final cone. 24 cones. 4 Rugby balls.
10 mins Pass and support follow the leader. (See support sheets in year 3 PE planning folder) Children in groups of five in a separated section per group. Children to stand in a line one behind the other. The person at the front of the line has the ball. They run round while the others slowly follow. The person at the front passes the ball to the next person and then runs to the end of the line. Gentle passes and 2 hands on ball at all times. Balls and tags. and awareness around them. 10 mins Running and defending Score a Try Children in groups of five in a separated section per group. One player is nominated as the defender and stands in the middle of the section. One by one, holding a ball, the attackers try to pass the defender and score a try at the far side of the section, without being tagged along the way. One point is given to the attacker if they get past alternatively one point is given to the defender to catching the attacker. All attackers run once then the defender is changed. Dodge the defender.
1 Decision making 5 v 5 Pupils to have a third of the netball court each. Start the game with a free pass at the centre. The attacking players must try to run past the defenders to score a try. If tagged, the ball carrier must pass the ball backwards to a teammate within three strides or three seconds. After a successful tag tackle, the defender must hand the tag back to the tagged player and stand next to them. From this position they cannot attempt to intercept or obstruct the pass. Attackers: -Run forwards. -Dodge the defenders. -Only pass if tagged or if you see a teammate in a better position. -Support players must stand behind the ball. Defenders: -Keep the heads up-focus on the tag. -Always hand the tag back after a successful tackle. Tags and balls. Stretching. Discuss what has been learnt as stretching out. Q: What tips could you give another class that had never played rugby? Q: Have you learnt anything new today? Recap skills looked at in the lesson.
Lesson 3 Age Range: Year 3 No. of Students: 30 Length of Session: 45 minutes Room/Location: Playground Learning Objectives: To refine attacking and defending skills Resources: Cones, tags and rugby balls. Time Activity Teaching points Resources Saftey Passing - Follow the Leader (See support sheets in year 3 PE planning folder) Children in groups of five in a separated section per group. Children to stand in a line one behind the other. The person at the front of the line has the ball. They run round while the others slowly follow. The person at the front passes the ball to the next person and then runs to the end of the line. Stretch out as a class. Remind pupils that in rugby the ball must always be passed backwards, rather than forwards. 6 balls and look for space
10 mins Passing, supporting and catching Chain reaction Children to stand in lines of 5. Player 1 to stand with the ball. Player 2 to kneel on one knee. Player 3 to kneel on both knees. Player 4 to lie on their front. Player 5 to sit cross legged. (This will ensure that the children stay in line and pass backwards) Ensure players are in the correct starting position and explain that this is to help them stay behind the player with the ball. Player 5 to have ball by the end of the run. 6 balls Children to pass the ball down the line while moving. Then the next set of 5 children go. 10 mins Game related practice- Pass, defend and attack Ensure pupils swap positions and pass the ball from the left this time. Keep same lines as above. This time ask players 4 and 5 to become a defender. They must begin at the other side of the pitch and their aim is to tag the player with the ball to get them to pass. The attackers need to try to get to the other side for a try without the ball being caught by a defender. Pupils to pass ball if tagged. Must try to run quickly to end of channel. 30 tags and 6 balls and watching where they are running.
1 Decision making 6 v 4 Use a third of the netball court for each game.1 pupil from a team of 5 from earlier to move to the other team. Start the game with a free pass at the centre. The defending team must step back. The attacking players must try to run past the defenders and score a try by placing the ball on the line. If tagged, the attacker must pass the ball backwards to a teammate within three strides of three seconds. After a successful tag, the defender must hand the tag back to the tagged player, stay on his/her side and must not attempt to intercept or obstruct the pass. Discuss what has been learnt as stretching out. Ensure pupils understand the rules of tagging and that the defender must stand to the side of the attacker so as not to intercept the pass. Ensure the children are passing backwards. Recap skills looked at in the lesson. 30 tags and 3 balls
Lesson 4 Age Range: Year 3 No. of Students: 30 Length of Session: 45 minutes Room/Location: Playground Learning Objectives: To make tactical decisions during a game Resources: Cones, tags and rugby balls. Time Activity Teaching points Resources Saftey Stretch out as a class Running and defending- Bull dog Whole class to play. Every child to have tags on. Whole class to stand along a line on the playground. 5 children chosen to stand in front of the rest of the class. The children on the line need to run to the other side without their tag being pulled. If their tag is pulled they need to join the 5 nominated children in trying to catch the rest of the class. Attackers to look for space. Defenders to try to defend as one team and hand back tags to attackers after successful tackle. 30 tags and look for space.
7 mins 8 mins Passing and decision making - 5v1v1v1v1v1 - Problem Solving Split court into 3 channels along the length of the netball court. 10 children per section. Play the game bull dog as above but the formation of the defenders has changed. This time the 5 defenders are only allowed to move sideways and they are standing 5m apart. The other 5 children must get past all 5 defenders. Defenders only allowed to move sideways. Attackers to pass to teammate if in better position, but must pass backwards. Supporting players must stay behind attacker with the ball. 30 tags and 4 balls 30 tags and 4 balls and look for space. Red=attackers Green=defenders Swap positions over so that all pupils get a chance to defend.
1 Decision making 5 v 5 Children to play a rugby game using tactics. Use a third of the netball court for each game. 10 children per game. Coaching points: Attackers: -Try to run around the defender but pass if a teammate is in a better position. -Support players by staying behind the ball. Coaching points: Defenders: -Keep the head up focus on the tag. -Always hand the tag back after a successful tackle. Ensure pupils understand the rules of tagging and that the defender who tagged the attacker must stand to the side of the attacker so as not to intercept the pass. Pupils to use new skills. 30 tags and 3 balls and look for space. To make this easier (for attackers) use the same defender formation as above or ask defenders to walk or hop. To make this harder (for attackers) allow defenders to move forwards, backwards and sideways. Defenders can choose their own defensive pattern so the attackers cannot predict it. Discuss what has been learnt as stretching out. Recap skills looked at in the lesson.
Lesson 5 Age Range: Year 3 No. of Students: 30 Length of Session: 45 minutes Room/Location: Playground Learning Objectives: To refine decision making skills during a game Resources: Cones, tags and rugby balls. Time Activity Teaching points Resources Saftey 1 Decision making 6 v 4 Stretch out as a class Use a third of the netball court for each game. 10 pupils per section. Teams to be set up as 6 v 4. Start the game with a free pass in the middle, ensuring that the defending team retreats 7m. The attacking players must then try to run past the defenders to score a try. If tagged, the attacker must pass the ball backwards to a team mate within 3 strides or 3 seconds. After a successful tag tackle, the defender must hand back the tag and stay on the players side until their backward pass to their team mate has been taken. They must not intercept. To make the game harder: If the team in possession has not scored a try after seven tag tackles, possession is awarded to the other team with a free pass. To make the game easier: No pass interceptions allowed. Ensure pupils understand the rules of tagging and that the defender must stand to the side of the attacker so as not to intercept the pass. Attackers: -run forward. -dodge defenders. -only pass if tagged, or if a team mate is in a better position. -support players must stay behind the ball. Communicate between players. Defender: -keep head up-focus on the tag. -always hand the tag back after a successful tackle. 30 tags and 3 balls and awareness of others
10mins See notes in planning folder. Decision making - Move it Wide - Attack the space Have 2 groups using each third and go one after the other. 2 defenders (green) and 3 attackers (red) stand at the top of the pitch as shown below. When the whistle goes the defenders must run round to the right and past the green cones A, C and E. The attackers must run left and past the red cones B, D and F. The attackers aim is to score a try along the A, C, E line. The defenders aim is to stop them by catching their tag. You can have all 3 attackers with balls to make it easier or one ball between them to make it harder. Run wide. Call for ball. Get in good positions to receive ball. 30 tags and 6 balls. 18 cones Then swap positions so all children have had a go at each position.
10 mins Decision making 5 v 5 Use a third of the netball court for each game. This is similar to the game just played above, but this time the one ball carrier must run around cone D and one of the defenders must run around cone C. Two defenders and three attackers (one of whom has the ball) stand on the middle line A-B as before. When the whistle goes the attackers without the ball run around cone B and the ball carrier runs around cone D. They need to score a try alone line A-E. Meanwhile the defenders run around cone A and C. They need to prevent the attackers scoring by tagging them. Ensure pupils understand the rules of tagging and that the defender must stand to the side of the attacker so as not to intercept the pass. Pupils to use new skills. Encourage the attackers to draw defenders wide and look to produce gaps in the middle of the grid. Attackers will need to move around and pass quickly. 30 tags and 3 balls To increase pressure on either side, the teacher can stagger the start of the attackers or defenders. Discuss what has been learnt as stretching out. Recap skills looked at in the lesson.
Lesson 6 Age Range: Year 3 No. of Students: 30 Length of Session: 45 minutes Room/Location: Playground Learning Objectives: To apply all tag rugby skills in a competitive environment Resources: Cones, tags and rugby balls. Time Activity Organisation Teaching points Resources Saftey Running and defending- Bull dog Stretch out as a class. Every child to have a tag. Have 5 nominated players in the center of the court. Use all of the netball court. The children must get past the 5 defenders in the center of the court without their tag being pulled. Attackers to look for space. Defenders to try to defend as one team and hand back tags to attackers after successful tackle. 30 tags and look for space. 3 Mini tournament Children to be split into teams of 5. Three courts to be used in 5 v 5 formation. Teams to move around so that have played at least 3 teams. Discuss what has been learnt as stretching out. Ensure that all the skills learnt have been recapped and explain that they now have to put them all into practice in a competitive environment. - Keep both hands on ball - Pass ball if tagged -Tagger must hand back tag and stand to side of partner so they can pass - Pass ball backwards support players to stay behind ball Recap skills looked at in the lesson. 30 tags and 3 balls. and look for space.
