3 1. Introduction The ServerLink 8 / 16 / 32 port Cat 5 KVM switches allow you to control attached servers and computers from your console drawer or optional second user remote console. With the optional Cat 5 based remote console port you can you remotely control servers and computers up to 300 metres away. The built-in Cat 5 transmitter synthesizes VGA monitor and keyboard/mouse signals and transmits the signals to the remote Cat 5 receiver using standard Cat 5 cabling. With the optional IP based remote console port you can control one or many computers locally at the server site or remotely via the Internet using a standard browser. Securely gain BIOS level access to systems for maintenance, support or failure recovery. 9 Cat 5 Transmitter (T-Dongle) Installation Cat 5 T-dongle has four connectors and includes a PS/2 to USB adapter. 1. RJ45 connector for connecting Cat 5 cable to KVM switch. 2. HDDB15 male connector for PC/Server VGA port. 3. Purple mini din 6-pin plug for PS/2 keyboard port (Connect purple PS/2 to USB adapter for USB enabled computer). 4. Green mini din 6-pin plug for PS/2 mouse port. NB. Use the purple PS/2 to USB adapter to connect to a computer s USB port. Do not connect the green PS/2 mouse connector. (Leave disconnected) Figure 2-2. PS/2 T-dongle and PS/2 to USB adapter It is recommended to power off all the computers and servers before the installation. If you cannot turn off a PS/2 computer, then plug in T-dongle connectors in the following order: firstly PS/2 mouse connector, secondly PS/2 keyboard connector and lastly the VGA connector to the PC. 7

10 2.2 Optional Second User Remote Console Installation IP Module Please refer to IP Module Manual on CD-ROM for full details. IP Remote Console Installation: Power off the KVM switch. Remove the cover of the add-on slot, slide in the IP Module and make sure the module is fully inserted into the slot. The IP Module redirects local keyboard, mouse and video data to a remote administration console. It allows you to control one or many computers locally at the server site or remotely via the Internet using a standard browser. Figure 2-3. IP-Module 8

11 2.2.2 Cat 5 Module Please refer to Cat 5 Module Manual on CD-ROM for full details. Cat 5 Remote Console Installation: Power off the KVM switch. Remove the cover of the add-on slot, slide in the Cat 5 transmitter module and make sure the module is fully inserted into the slot. Extend your console up to 300 metres away by connecting the Cat 5 cable to the R-Box at the remote end. Figure 2-4. Connect to Cat 5 Receiver (R-Box) 9

12 2.3 Power ON Check connections and plug in power supply Double check whether all cables/connectors are properly connected. You can check the color of keyboard and mouse connector to make sure the keyboard and mouse cables go to the correct ports. Plug the power supply to the KVM switch and plug the AC power plug into the electrical receptacle. 2.4 When video signal is foggy or unclear The R-Box (Cat 5 Receiver) enables the user to access the KVM switch up to 300 metres away with superior auto-adjust RGB gain/delay control capability. The R-Box can use Cat 5/Cat5e/Cat6 UTP (unshielded) or STP (shielded) cables. If your application needs high video resolution over longer distances, we recommend using high quality STP cabling. It is highly recommended to use optimal cable length (shortest possible run) to get the best video quality possible. 2.5 Daisy Chain Connection Use one end of the daisy chain cable to connect to the Daisy Chain port of console Master KVM switch and connect other end of daisy chain cable to the Local Console port of the next Slave KVM switch. Please repeat the procedure for next Slave KVM switch. You can daisy chain up to a maximum of eight banks. The console OSD (On-Screen-Display) menu will show only the port information of the Console Master KVM switch. When the Master unit starts up, it will query all daisy chained Slave units, and automatically set up the Bank ID for each Slave unit. The Master unit will auto-query the daisy chained Slaves every 30 seconds. 10

13 Figure 2-5. Daisy Chain Connection 3 Hotkey You can conveniently switch ports on the KVM through simple key sequences. The default hot key is SCROLL LOCK. If you prefer to use a different hot key, go to OSD menu and change the default hot key. To send commands to KVM switch, the SCROLL LOCK key must be pressed twice within 2 seconds. You will hear a beep for confirmation and the keyboard will be in Hotkey mode. Enter Command within 2 seconds. If you have not pressed any key within 2 seconds during Hotkey mode, the Hotkey mode will be terminated and revert back to Operation System control state. 15 4 OSD (On Screen Display) ServerLink 8 / 16 / 32 Port Cat 5 KVM User Manual There are two methods to activate the OSD menu. 1. Active OSD by pressing the Hotkey twice, then Space Bar within 2 seconds Scroll Lock Scroll Lock Space Bar Figure 4-1. OSD Activation 2. Activate OSD by Mouse Hold the left mouse button press and release the Esc key to activate Port Display. Hold the right mouse button press and release the Esc key to activate the OSD. The OSD Menu has a 3 tier dialog window: 1. Login Window --- When powering on the KVM switch, it will display a login window and prompt for a user name and password. The OSD Menu can support one SUPERVISOR and eight USERS. When you login as Supervisor, please go to USER SECURITY to change the SUPERVISOR user name and password and to add new USER s. SUPERVISOR can access all Main menu options. USER can access only PORT NAME and PORT SEARCH for switching. 2. Port Name--- port switching using OSD 3. 16 4.1 Login Window Figure 4-2. Login Window When powering on the console, a login window will be displayed. If there is no input for username and password for over one minute at the login window, the monitor s signal will be turned off. The default SUPERVISOR user name is all eight zero digits The default SUPERVISOR password is all eight zero digits After login or switching to another port either by OSD or Hotkey, the screen will display the following information. One digit BANK NUMBER, two digit PORT NUMBER, PORT NAME and current Hotkey. Any keyboard input or mouse movement and the screen will revert back to the PC. S c r o l l L o c k Figure 4-3. Login Window Security Logout If there is no input for username and password for over one minute at the login window, the console monitor s signal will be turned off. During normal operation, if there is no input from the console keyboard or mouse for over 10 minutes, the KVM switch will turn off the screen display and then display the login window waiting for the user name and password. 14

OSD Function Key LOGOUT Requires next user to enter username and password again. The first line bar is the Bank number, following line bars are the port names. Use Up Arrow key, Down Arrow key or OSD MOUSE to move. After you have selected the PC port, you can either press the Enter Key or move the mouse cursor to the PC name and double click the left button of mouse to switch to the PC port immediately. Press PgUp key or PgDn key for selecting previous or next Bank. 15

Use Up Arrow key, Down Arrow key or OSD MOUSE to move to the port name you want to change, Press Ins key or click the right button of mouse for editing PC name. Press Esc key to cancel editing PC name without any change or Enter key to complete the new PC name. 17

22 Only the SUPERVISOR can edit the ACCESS LIST. The first columns are the PC names and port numbers. The following 8 columns define the access right of each USER. Press Enter Key to activate/deactivate the access rights for each port. O indicates access is enabled. There are three levels you can choose, FAST, MIDDLE and SLOW. Using " and key on keyboard to move the highlight bar to the movement speed you want to use. Press Enter key and the mouse cursor movement speed will change. 22
