3 -1- SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS Please read and follow this user s manual carefully and completely. Important: Please keep this user s manual for later reference. It consists of instructions, front and real panel, installation and operation, troubleshooting, maintenance. If UPS does not operate properly and you cannot solve the problem using the troubleshooting information in this user s manual, please contact your LEONICS local distributor, LEONICS Service Center, send to support@leonics.com or visit To help you much more quickly when contact us, please record the following information. No user serviceable part inside, please refer servicing to qualified service personnel. 1.1 Electrical safety instructions DO NOT work alone under hazardous condition Short circuit current in conductor may cause severe skin burn Must contact certified person when user wants to connect any equipment to utility power line Check whether the cables, receptacles and power source are always at good condition To reduce short circuit risk, if you are not sure whether you have ground system, disconnect UPS from utility every time before you connect any loads to UPS. After connecting all loads to UPS already, then reconnect UPS to utility power DO NOT touch any metal parts of the equipments when connect to UPS When connecting or disconnecting communication cables between equipments, should use only one hand. This is to avoid electric shock from contact 2 surfaces which ground has different potential voltage Recommend to connect UPS to 3-wire power source (2 poles + ground) which connects to branch circuit, fuse or automatic cut out.

4 1.2 Caution! Safety instructions for installing and operating UPS Should install UPS in dry area with good ventilation, low humidity, no chemical particles, no flammable substances. Avoid installing UPS near radio transmission station, heat dissipation equipment or direct sunlight UPS has ventilation grills on the back and sides. To help UPS has good ventilation, DO NOT block ventilation grills Should connect UPS to utility line and turn it on all the time When user wants to connect computer interface to UPS, turn off power switch and disconnect cable from utility line Turn on UPS before turning on loads to prevent surge from the loads DO NOT connect utility power to UPS OUTPUT. This may cause damage to your UPS When heavy rain, please avoid using electronic instruments including UPS to prevent it from lightning Use soft cloth to clean UPS when it is OFF. DO NOT clean it with any solvents DO NOT use UPS with life recovery instruments. The failure of UPS may cause life recovery instruments failure or effect to their performance or effect to safety system of those instruments Ultimate-X UKA-series UPS should be connected to electric ground. 1.3 Warning! Safety instructions for battery There are batteries inside the UPS. Although user has disconnected it from utility power line, the UPS OUTLET or OUTPUT terminal still has electricity. Be careful of electric shock The internal parts of UPS may conduct electric current which is dangerous to user. UPS has no user serviceable parts. DO NOT remove or disassemble any parts of UPS. If user wants to repair UPS, please contact us or our nearest service center In case that user does not use or keep UPS for a long time, to preserve the battery life please follow the below instructions Press POWER OFF button at the front side of UPS and unplug input cable from power source In case that user does not use UPS for a long time. User should recharge battery every 3 months by plugging the input cable to power source. Then press POWER ON button at the front side of UPS and leave it at least 8 hours. -2- INTRODUCTION 2.1 General Leonics Ultimate-X UKA-6000/UKA UPS is True On-line Double Conversion uninterruptible power supply which is the highest efficiency UPS system available in the present market. It is able to protect all kinds of power problems.

5 -3- Leonics Ultimate-X UKA-6000/UKA UPS is designed for any power sensitive electrical appliances and electronic equipments such as computers, communication equipments, medical instruments, electronic scales, measuring instruments, scientific equipments, etc. 2.2 Features - Fully digitalized microprocessor control - Wide input voltage range - UPS start up without battery - Cold start - Advanced battery management - Automatic battery charging in UPS off mode - Lightning and surge protection - Short circuit and overload protection - LED and LCD display - EMI/RMI noise filter 2.3 How Leonics Ultimate-X UKA-6000/UKA UPS works When utility power and loads are normal. When utility power (AC line) is normal and UPS has less than 100% load. UPS converts utility power from alternative current (AC) to direct current (DC) at RECTIFIER. Some of DC power flows to charge battery to be backup power and the rest flows directly to INVERTER to invert power to high quality and stable AC power. Then supply to load When utility power is normal but overload. When utility power is normal and UPS has more than 100% load. UPS converts utility power at RECTIFIER to charge battery only. UPS can transfer connected loads to consume power from bypass power source (bypass mode) automatically When utility power fails but loads are normal. When utility power fails or blackout and UPS has less than 100% load. UPS draws backup power from battery to invert to AC power and supplies to load continuously When operating on maintenance bypass mode. All loads will get power directly and continuously from utility line through MAINTENANCE BYPASS SWITCH. Then it is safe to stop the operation of UPS to disconnect UPS from utility line for maintenance.

6 3.1 Front panel -4- FRONT AND REAR PANEL POWER ON/ POWER OFF: The button to turn on and turn off UPS FUNCTION: The button to test UPS operation and mute alarm sound MULTIFUNCITON SWITCH: The button to select UPS parameters to show on LCD display. INPUT: Indicates input voltage and frequency. BATTERY: Indicates battery voltage and battery capacity in percentage. OUTPUT: Indicates output voltage and frequency. LOAD: Indicates load capacity in Watt and VA. TEMPERATURE: Indicates temperature inside UPS. Remark: When press and hold the button for 2 seconds, LCD display will circularly and orderly display items from OUTPUT, LOAD, TEMPERATURE, INPUT and BATTERY every 2 seconds and it will turn to static output status when you press and hold the button for 2 seconds NORMAL OPERATION: Green LED indicates UPS is operating normally and powered by utility line (on line) or battery mode when utility power fails WARNING OPERATION: Yellow LED indicates UPS is alarming. For example, when utility power is supplied but UPS cannot start up, UPS operates on bypass mode, fan stops operation ABNORMAL OPERATION: Red LED indicates UPS has faults and does not supply power to load DATA DISPLAY: LCD part to show the numerical value of UPS parameters BATTERY LEVEL: Each bar represents 25% of battery backup power starting from the smallest bar to the largest bar (25% to 100%).

7 STATUS DISPLAY: The indicator shows UPS status and faults. ON LINE ON BATT shows when UPS is operating on utility mode (on line mode). shows when UPS is operating on battery mode. ON BPS shows when UPS is powered directly from utility line (bypass mode) LOAD LEVEL: Each bar represents 25% of full load capacity starting from the smallest bar to the largest bar (25% to 100%) 3.2 Rear panel RS-232 Port: Port for connecting RS-232 cable to computer for using with monitoring software (option) INPUT CIRCUIT BREAKER: Circuit breaker for protecting UPS from overload or short circuit at the main AC power source PE/EARTH terminal: Terminal for connecting to ground system INPUT terminal: Terminal for connecting input power cord from main AC power source to UPS Jumper terminal: Terminal for connecting input power cord to UPS. In case of connecting one UPS to multiple UPSs in parallel, should remove input power cord connected between jumpers.

8 OUTPUT TERMINAL: Terminal for connecting to loads SNMP CARD SLOT (option): Socket for connecting computer network LAN cable to view electrical data and UPS status via SNMP/HTTP PARALLEL PORT (option): Port for connecting one UPS to multiple UPSs in order to lighten the loads BATTERY EXTENSION PORT (option): Port for connecting to external battery bank to extend backup time MAINTENANCE SWITCH (option): Switch for switching power source in order to transfer loads to consume power from AC utility power source for maintenance. 3.3 Input and output terminal block connection diagram Ultimate-X UKA-6000 UPS, Ultimate-X UKA UPS Input earth = The terminal for connecting ground system of UPS input side Input neutral = The terminal for connecting Neutral of UPS input side Input line = The terminal for connecting Line of UPS input side Output earth = The terminal for connecting ground system of UPS output side Output neutral = The terminal for connecting Neutral of UPS output side Output line = The terminal for connecting Line of UPS output side Remark: If UPS is used in single unit, when connecting JP1 and JP2, the wire should be shorted. INSTALLATION The warranty will be voided, if this product has been improper installation, not following the installation instruction that mentioned in this user s manual. 4.1 Preparing the location Install UPS at least 30 cm at the side and back or other equipments to enable good ventilation and easy access for installation, operation and maintenance.

9 Install UPS at least 80 cm around UPS to enable good ventilation and easy access for installation, operation and maintenance Install at the floor that is capable of supporting the weight of UPS Avoid install UPS in these areas: - that get sunlight for long time - with high humidity, water drops or rain - near chemical vapors or seaside - with dusty - with low pressure - near radioactivity area - with high intensity of magnetic field or electric field 4.2 Unplug input cable from AC power source before installing every time for safety. Turn off battery circuit breaker and open cover of terminal block at the rear side of UPS. 4.3 To select the cable sizes for UPS installing, please refer to the following table: Model Cable sizes Ultimate-X UKA-6000 UL AWG (6 mm 2 ) Ultimate-X UKA UL AWG (10 mm 2 ) 4.4 Refer to the input and output terminal block connection diagram to connect input and output cables to the terminal block. 4.5 To select the cable sizes for earthing, please refer to the following table: Model Cable sizes Ultimate-X UKA-6000 UL AWG (6 mm 2 ) Ultimate-X UKA UL AWG (10 mm 2 ) 4.6 After the installation is done, recheck if the connecting is right and properly tighten. 4.7 If user wants to install the leak current protection switch, connect it to UPS OUTPUT at the rear side of UPS. 4.8 Turn off loads before connecting them to UPS OUTPUT. Connect cables and turn on loads one by one. 4.9 Although UPS has been disconnected from utility power line, UPS OUTPUT still has electricity. To shutdown UPS cannot ensure that internal UPS is safe, turn off UPS and cut off AC power source Recommend to charge the battery for 8 hours before using. After all connections are done, turn on input circuit breaker, the battery will be started up charging To connect inductance load i.e. generator, monitor and laser printer to UPS OUTPUT, UPS power rating should be 2-4 times of total load power because starting power of these loads would be bigger than usual In case of battery extension (if any): DC voltage of UPS is 240 VDC. When connecting the battery extension, connect 20 units of 12 VDC batteries in series (in 1 string) or connect any strings in parallel which batteries in every string should be 20 units.

10 For Ultimate-X UKA-6000 and UKA UPSs, connect one end of battery cable to UPS and the other end is open 2 cables to connect battery. The procedure is very important, please follow the instructions, otherwise there is a risk of electric shock. Warning: DO NOT work with batteries when UPS is operating. Should install DC circuit breaker between battery and UPS, refer the following table to select the circuit breaker Model DC voltage Battery current Ultimate-X UKA VDC 24 Amax Ultimate-X UKA VDC 40 Amax Turn off battery circuit breaker and connect 20 units of batteries in series. Connect battery cables to battery poles (DO NOT connect cables to UPS first, there is a risk of electric shock), connect red cable to battery anode and black cable to battery cathode. Connect battery cables to UPS battery extension outlet. DO NOT connect loads to UPS now, user should first connect UPS input power cord then press INPUT button of UPS and turn on battery circuit breaker. UPS will start up charging battery. OPERATION 5.1 Turning on UPS Under normal utility power line (AC start) Plug the power cord to the wall outlet and press INPUT button of UPS. UPS will start up charging battery automatically. UPS is operating on bypass mode that means UPS transfers loads to consume power from bypass power source. Yellow LED will light on, LCD display will indicate ups bps and output indication is bypass power source value Press and hold POWER ON button for 1 second then INVERTER will start up operation UPS will start up self-test automatically, yellow LED will be off then green LED will light on and LCD display will indicate on line that means UPS is operating on on line mode. When utility power fails, UPS will operate on battery mode and LCD item INPUT characters will blink Under power failure condition (DC start) When utility power fails, blackout or UPS input power cord is not connected to utility outlet, press and hold POWER ON button for 2 seconds to turn on UPS When UPS starts up operation, it will do self-test automatically. LCD display will indicate on batt that means UPS is operating on battery mode.

11 5.2 Turning off UPS Under normal utility power line Press and hold POWER OFF button for 2 seconds to turn off UPS then INVERTER will stop operation UPS will start up self-test automatically, green LED will be off then yellow LED will light on and LCD display will indicate on bps that means UPS is operating on bypass mode and output indication is bypass power source value. If user wants to make UPS has no output, presses POWER OFF button to turn off UPS. UPS will keep self-test until LCD panel has no display and indication and UPS has no output Under power failure condition When utility power fails, blackout or UPS input power cord is not connected to utility outlet, press and hold POWER OFF button for 2 seconds to turn off UPS After turning off UPS, UPS will keep self-test until LCD panel has no display and indication and UPS has no output. 5.3 Running modes Bypass mode LCD panel on bypass running mode will indicate as below figure, LCD graphic LOAD LEVEL and BATTERY LEVEL blocks will be indicated according to real capacity value, yellow LED will light on and alarm will beep once every 2 minutes When LCD item INPUT characters blink that means AC input voltage or frequency exceeds normal input power range When UPS operates on bypass mode, it does not supply backup power and loads consume power from utility line directly. -9- UPS bypass running mode AC mode LCD panel on AC running mode will indicate as below figure, LCD display will indicate on line and LCD graphic LOAD LEVEL and BATTERY LEVEL blocks will be indicated according to real capacity value.

12 When LCD display indicates on batt that means AC input voltage or frequency exceeds normal input power range When UPS is overloaded, alarm will beep once every half second and LCD graphic LOAD LEVEL blocks will blink that means UPS is overloaded, user should reduce some loads and control load capacity not to exceed 95% Press MULTIFUNCTION button to verify AC input voltage and frequency value. UPS AC running mode Battery mode LCD panel on battery running mode will indicate as below figure, LCD display will indicate on batt and LCD graphic LOAD LEVEL and BATTERY LEVEL blocks will be indicated according to real capacity value When UPS operates on battery mode, alarm will beep once every 4 seconds. Press and hold FUNCTION button for 1 second to mute the alarm, if press and hold FUNCTION button for 1 second again, alarm will return to beep warning When battery capacity is decreased, LCD graphic BATTERY LEVEL blocks will be 0. When battery voltage is low, alarm will beep once every second and yellow LED will light on to notify user that battery capacity is not enough, user needs to save data files and reduce some loads. 13 5.3.4 Abnormal mode -11- UPS abnormal running mode LCD panel indicates as above figure, red LED lights on, LCD panel shows the fault mark ( fault code at the right side and fault information at the status section. ), the MAINTENANCE 6.1 Leonics UPS does not need any special maintenance. Just only use it according to this user s manual and place it away from dust and humid area. Anyway, if any of following items occurs, please contact us or our nearest service center Cable is cut or damaged Wet with any liquid UPS metal cabinet is broken UPS is dropped, fallen, crashed or hit User notices abnormal problems under normal operation. 6.2 Under normal operation and continuous use, expected life time of ventilation fan is approximately 20,000 hours. 6.3 Battery maintenance Under normal operation, battery should be charged every 4-6 months and recharge time should be more than 2 hours In high temperature area, battery should be charged every 2 months Normally, battery operating life time is 3-5 years at the operating temperature below 25 C and battery operating life time is 2-3 years at the operating temperature below 35 C. 6.4 Even though the backup batteries are maintenance free type, user still needs to check them every year to make sure that they are still in good condition by following the procedure below Turn on UPS Turn on loads which are connected to UPS OUTPUT Disconnect all loads from utility power line and check whether the loads are still working normally because all loads consume power from backup batteries now.

14 UPS has dangerous voltage inside. The connected loads are exceeded UPS rated capacity and UPS is overloaded. Battery voltage is too low or battery is not well connected. Center. UPS is operating on battery mode, save files and shutdown loads. Check to make sure input voltage or frequency is in UPS input power range. Reconnect line and neutral lines properly. Check load power and reduce some loads until load quantity is less than UPS rated capacity. Check the battery part and well connect it. If battery is deteriorated, please replace it and make sure battery switch is ON position. 1. Battery is not fully charged. Connect input cable to power source and turn on UPS for at least 8 hours. 2. The connected loads are exceeded the UPS rated capacity and UPS is overloaded. Check load power and reduce some loads until load quantity is less than UPS rated capacity. 3. Battery is deteriorated. Please contact Leonics Service Center.
