13 The Doctoral School (1999) The PhD courses of Politecnico di Torino are managed by a unique structure, the Doctoral School (ScuDo Scuoladidottorato). The School is in charge of the harmonization of the various PhD, yet preserving their essential differences, the coordination of the training and cultural activities, the control of the PhDs quality, the promotion and management of the strategic choices and of the scientific policy involving the PhDs. 18 PhD ADMISSION The admission to the PhD courses is carried out by means of a competitive selection procedure. The announcement is published once a year (usually in August) on the website of the Doctoral School The application is submitted on-line by using the procedure apply@polito.it Requirements for admission Master of Science Degree obtained no later than 31st of December Certificate of English knowledge (IELTS, TOEFL, PET)

19 Some characteristics of PhD Program 3-year program 1/3 of training activity 2/3 research activity A research project and an academic tutor are assigned to each PhD student. In the case of a collaboration with an industry, the student will also have an industrial tutor The training and research activity is constantly monitored by the Teachers Council The final exam consists in the defence of the PhD thesis in front of an examination board composed of Politecnico and external professors, also from foreign universities

Each student can attend up to 18 months of training/research activities abroad during his/her three years of doctorate. 38 DISAT: the CRE 3 Group CRE 3 Group Presentation The CRE 3 Group (Catalytic Reaction Engineering for Energy and Environment), coordinated by Prof. Guido Saracco, head of Department of Applied Science and Technology (DISAT) is the largest of the Department: 2 full professors, 3 associate professor, 2 academic researchers, 2 post-docs, 10 contract researchers, 10 PhD students, 20 undergraduate students. Their research activities can be gathered under the umbrella Catalysis for Energy Sustainability and Environment Protection. Catalytic treatment of Diesel Exhaust: soot combustion; NO x reduction; catalyst and catalytic trap development Catalytic filters for flue gas cleaning: DeNO x or VOCs removal combined with fly-ash removal in catalytically activate filters Non-catalytic combustion of methane: test of premixed burners and development of their optimum design procedures finalized to produce low emissions Catalytic combustion of methane: development of catalysts and catalytic fibre burners Catalytic membrane reactors: propane catalytic combustion with separate feed of reactants Electrocatalytic processes: deposition and testing of electrodes for fuel cell systems; oxidation of organic pollutants in waste waters Gasoline/Biodiesel/LPG/methane Reforming to H 2 for fuel-cell application: syngas desulphurisation, WGS reactions, CO SELOX reaction, powertrain modelling Short-contact time reactors STC-CPO: catalytic partial oxidation of methane to syngas Recovery of valuable chemical from waste waters via chemical or membrane processes Biomas valorisation: production of biodiesel under supercritical conditions, anaerobic digestion
