1 Elisa Blackmon Personal Finance & Business Math, Statistics & Probability, Beginning Sewing My name is Elisa Blackmon. I am a 1995 graduate of Texas A&M University, with a Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting. After graduating, marrying my college sweetheart and moving to San Antonio, I finally acknowledged my lifelong desire to be a teacher and pursued a secondary Mathematics teaching certification. I taught public school at Smithson Valley Middle School and Reagan High School before becoming a stay at home mom. For about an 8-year period, when my kids were babies, I did private home tutoring for various high school math courses. Two years ago, I began homeschooling, and am now excited to get to teach in a classroom again. Kacee Carlson Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, Advanced Math My name is Kacee Carlson, and I am a happily married mother of 4 wonderful children. I hold a B.S. in Secondary Education, with a major in Mathematics. I am happy to call San Antonio home, and my family has lived here for the past 9 years. I have worked as a private math tutor for the past 19 years, while moving frequently with my military husband. This is my 4 th year at SAC Day, and I have enjoyed it greatly. I truly love teaching math, and I love helping students conquer their fear of math. I use a variety of different methods and tips to help students learn difficult concepts. Students say that I explain things in a way that makes sense to them! Thinking mathematically is a lifelong skill, and I hope that all of my students will gain confidence and an appreciation for math. A few of them might even learn to love it like I do! Page 1 of 6

2 Katie Dillard U.S. History I and U.S. History II and Speech and Debate My name is Katie Dillard. I love to teach, but I mostly love to learn. Loving to learn is something I acquired over my high school years, and is something I have been able to instill in my students since that time. I really believe that when a person chooses to own their education, really apply themselves, there s nothing they can t accomplish. This past year I have had the privilege of tutoring algebra, and speech and debate. My pastimes include docenting at the Museum of Texas Handmade Furniture in New Braunfels (studying German and Scottish History), and finishing my Education Degree through Louisiana Baptist University. I m excited about the opportunities God has been so gracious to lay before me, and I look forward to a great school year! Angela Belle Gamble Creative Writing My name is Angela Belle Gamble, and I home educate my 4 children in Spring Branch, Texas. I graduated from Baylor University in 1994 with a Bachelor of Science in Education and a specialization in English. I did part of my student teaching in England, where I was exposed to some teaching methods that differed from that in the United States (not to mention gaining a great love of tea). I taught public school in both California and Texas. Once I had my own children, God led me to homeschool them, which has been an amazing journey. I have always adored good literature and loved the craft of writing. I ve been journaling since I was in elementary school, and much of what I write is for the sheer joy of writing. Over the years, I have had the opportunity to spend some time in workshops with published authors, including a recent novel and memoir boot camp with a published author from Austin. I am currently in the process of writing my own novel, and I thoroughly enjoy what I do. It is this love of writing that I hope to share with students as they move forward in creating their own poetry, short stories, novels and personal journals. To realize that I really CAN write is an insightful discovery, and to walk with the confidence of I am a writer is priceless. My idea of a perfect day is curling up with a good book for hours with my children, as we drink tea and talk together. When I m not doing that, I can often be found writing my novel, gardening, and taking an occasional nap with my cat. Page 2 of 6

3 Joni Gibson Government and Economics My name is Joni Gibson. I have been married for 22 years to a man I met while I was teaching Sunday School. Yes, I married my student! While there have been ups and downs, I love him dearly and enjoy doing life with him. We have one daughter, Becca who is in high school. I love the outdoors, spending time at the lake, camping and hiking and am also an avid reader. I also love teaching Bible studies and have taught various small groups for the past 20+ years. I graduated with a political science degree and worked in the legal field for 14 years. As I felt God moving me into ministry, I attended Southwestern Seminary at their satellite school in San Antonio. I received my M.Ed. degree and started my ministry at the church where I met my husband and where I had been a member for over 20 years. After 7 years on staff, I became a stay at home mom during Becca s formative years. Before homeschooling, I taught government and economics for several years at San Antonio Christian Schools. I love teaching Government and Economics at SAC Day and sharing about how God is interwoven into the founding of our nation. I also enjoy teaching my daughter at home. I am truly blessed to be able to teach and to instill my love of learning to others. Melanie Hudson Pre-Algebra, Biology and Human Anatomy My name is Melanie Hudson. I have been married for 14 years and have 2 children, ages 6 and 9. I am an active member of Community Bible Church, have led MOPS, sing in the choir and run two Facebook pages, one for families dealing with cancer and the other for homeschool families. I have a Cum Laude degree in Biological Science from Rutgers College, Rutgers University. Prior to teaching, I performed research in the Neurobiology Department at Scripps Research Institute. I have tutored all subjects except Spanish and have taught and tutored Algebra 1 & 2, Geometry, Pre-calculus & Calculus, Physical Science, Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Anatomy for 13 years. 4 Naomi Phillips Theatre Production My name is Naomi Phillips and I am very excited to be starting my 3 rd year at SAC Day. For the past 20 years, I have directed, costumed, choreographed, performed in and have done all aspects of the production all across Texas. I teach drama and musical theatre to youth at various theatres, and district schools and home schools. I have a passion for increasing one s quality of life, including keeping the arts alive by motivating youth and adults to be who they want to be. I bring a wealth of experience, creativity, and enthusiasm with me to SAC Day! Connie Redmond Physical Science, Physics & Chemistry I, Chemistry II My name is Connie Redmond. I have been a homeschool tutor since 2009 with HAAC class day and SAC Day. I have 20+ years teaching in various venues: public school in Richardson and Longview, TX, Trinity Episcopal School Longview, Heartlight Ministries, Hallsville, TX and East Texas Charter School, Longview. I have also served as a student teacher supervisor for Le Tourneau University first from Longview and now from a satellite location in Austin. My degrees are in Chemistry and Math: B.S. and M.Ed. from Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, TX. My doctorial work is in Physics from UT at Tyler. My husband of 40+ years and I retired and moved to the hill country in 2005 to build our home. We share acreage with 2 small dogs in Mystic Shores, Spring Branch. I have touched lives of more than 2000 students through the years, sharing my love for God and science. Several of those students have stayed in contact through their lives. I consider it an honor to work with students as they move toward adulthood. They learn analysis skills and problem solving appropriate not just to Physics and Chemistry, but to many aspects of life. 5 Kirsten Swanson Beginning and Intermediate Guitar My name is Kirsten Swanson. I have been homeschooled from kindergarten through my senior year. I am a recent high school graduate and plan on attending San Antonio College, to acquire my degree in sign language interpreting, in the Fall. I have served in the music ministry at my church for the past four years and enjoy it greatly. I have taught guitar for the past four years as well and have been privileged to see two of my students progress and join their school's praise team in the past year. I enjoy working with youth and seeing my students develop in their skills as well as in their love for music. Josefina Valentin-Barreto Spanish I, Spanish II, Spanish III My name is Josefina Valentin-Barreto and I was born and raised in the beautiful Spanish speaking Island of Puerto Rico. I completed my undergraduate degree in Education K-6th grade from the University of Puerto Rico graduating Magna Cum Laude. I then married Dr. Frank Valentin and moved to the US mainland. I have lived in places as far as Korea and love to travel and enjoy different cultures. I led a woman s Spanish Bible Study with different Spanish speaking friends from the Caribbean and Latin America. I understand the different Spanish accents, vocabulary and peculiarities of many Spanish speaking countries and know how to relate to them and teach a universal conversational Spanish easy to understand. I have been a Spanish tutor to High School students and advisor in a tutoring private company on elementary curriculum development. I have been a Spanish I, II and Conversational Spanish tutor at SAC Day. I have three kids (7th, 10th and a college student) which I love to homeschool. I am passionate in teaching my native language in a simple and easy way. I love Bible history, horses and playing tennis. Page 5 of 6

6 Cayce Yarbrough English, Writing & Journalism My name is Cayce Yarbrough and I graduated from Trinity University in 1987 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. I taught in public and private schools for 8 years and have taught homeschoolers for more than 10 years. My experience includes teaching English, History, and Journalism classes will be my 12 th year as a tutor for SAC Day.
