1 This unit provides an opportunity for the children to be creative and make their own instruments from junk. They use these instruments to improvise, compose and play junk jazz music in a variety of different musical structures. 2 medium term Plan 1 Performing verse and chorus structure Interpreting notation Improvising Paper tree Accompany a movie using paper sounds and performance art Paper groove Watch a demonstration of making sounds from paper and create a groove Jazz junk Learn the Jazz junk song and explore its verse and chorus structure When working in groups to make paper grooves, it might help the players to keep in time if one child is appointed to play the beat, while the others play the rhythm. Performing verse and chorus structure Interpreting notation and improvising Understanding ABA structure Jazz junk instruments Perform jazz patterns on junk instruments and add them to Jazz junk Jazz junk performance Identify typical features of jazz song structure and follow a score Jazz junk improvisations Listen to and perform improvisations within an ABA structure To support the groups in using ternary structure, discuss the choices they might make to produce a clear contrast between the A and B sections, eg different instruments, contrasting volume or tempo etc. Performing repeating rhythms Chanting in three parts Exploring sounds Performing rondo form Recycling bin bhangra Learn about bhangra music and dance, and perform a bhangra-style chant Recycled bhangra Perform bhangra rhythms on household waste soundmakers The seagull on the tip Listen to, then compose a rondo At first, untuned percussion players will to say their word rhythms quietly or in their heads in order to keep the rhythms going with the chorus as everyone else sings. They should drop out of singing the chorus in order to do this. As they become more confident, some players will no longer to say the words.

Paper groove Watch a demonstration of making sounds from paper and create a groove watch a movie and list the different ways that sounds are produced; work in groups to create grooves (repeating patterns of percussion sounds). Jazz junk Learn the Jazz junk song and explore its verse and chorus structure learn the verse and chorus of a song; accompany a song by adding hand movements and a chant; watch a rhythm being played on junk and join in; use junk to play a rhythm accompaniment with a song. Support: When working in groups to make paper grooves, it might help the players to keep in time if one child is appointed to play the beat, while the others play the rhythm. Binary Rhythm Groove Verse Chorus Compose brush paper rhythms by varying and extending the combinations of brush tap n, eg brush brush tap n brush brush tap n or tap n tap n brush brush tap n tap n brush brush Jazz junk mentions collages and sculptures made from household junk. The extra display shows some ideas for making junk art.

Jazz junk improvisations Listen to and perform improvisations within an ABA structure listen to jazz music and understand improvisation; play junk instruments in groups, using ternary structure (ABA); organise and structure their own music in groups. Support: To support the groups in using ternary structure, discuss the choices they might make to produce a clear contrast between the A and B sections, eg different instruments, contrasting volume or tempo etc. 4 Materials for making junk instruments, eg paper clips, elastic bands, shoeboxes, cutlery, sheets of A4 paper, pencils, sticky tape, tissue paper and cereal box liners Ternary Improvisation Ask the children to create a score of their ABA jazz improvisations. They should show as much detail as possible, eg which order the instruments enter, the shape of melody and rhythms. Look at the Jazz junk notations and score for ideas. Ever since musical instruments were invented, musicians have decorated them. Look at the examples on the extra display and give opportunities for the children to decorate their junk instruments.

For example,, allocate a different type of household waste item to each colour the blue, pink, green and red colours play together, alternating with the orange and white colours. Think of other ways to interpret the art. 5
