3 2 Overview: MusicPlus Digital is a digital whole class ukulele course for Key Stage 2 children. It was produced by Soundhub Kent in collaboration with some of the UK's leading musicians, composers and educationalists to allow more children to get first access instrumental tuition. MusicPlus Digital (MPD) can be used either in conjunction with a specialist music teacher or as a stand-alone resource. Lessons are designed to be 45 minutes in length and to be delivered over 30 weeks. MPD is designed for Key Stage 2 children from year 4 and up. What you need to start: 1) Each teacher using the software needs an MPD login. 2) The pack of lesson plans, score PDFs and a link to the 'Teacher Resources' area on the site. 3) Computers running IE9 or above, a whiteboard and speakers. 4) Enough ukuleles to cover the number of pupils for the largest class, plus a few extras for adults. Typically 32. If your school is to allow children to take ukuleles home then you need one for each child. 5) Someone to tune the ukuleles at the start of each session. Regardless of the method that is being employed it is very important that the ukuleles are tuned at the start of each session. An experienced music practitioner can learn to tune 30 instruments in just 5 minutes. If your school is using MPD as a stand-alone resource then tuning instructions will be given at the CPD training. 6) Someone to set up the ukuleles. New ukuleles require the strings to be stretched and set up so they stay in tune. This takes around 2 hours for 30 ukuleles.
4 3 Delivery Methods MPD can be used in a variety of ways and situations and can be tailored to fit into any primary music programme. Regardless of which approach your school chooses, after one year children will be able to accompany themselves singing whilst playing several chords, as well as playing simple melodies using TAB notation. We recommend that the best approach are those that use a specialist ukulele teacher as the skills and techniques are often best learned from a music professional. However, where one isn't available, MPD is still an effective resource that covers most KS2 national curriculem guidlines. 1) 'Alternate Week' Method Two year groups, both year groups starting from scratch. Over 30 weeks, two year groups learn the program, which is delivered by a combination of a specialist ukulele teacher (SUT) and primary classroom teacher (CT). This method is designed to get as many children learning as possible using the skills of a specialist music teacher, whist allowing classroom teacher's to gain confidence in delivering music lessons. The SUT delivers lessons to each class on alternate weeks, while the two CTs deliver lessons in between using the MPD resource. Here is an example of how this works in practice: Week 1 Week 2 Week 3 Week 4 Week 5 Year 4 SUT CT SUT CT SUT Year 5 CT SUT CT SUT CT
5 4 2 ) 'Specialist Music Teacher-led' Method Over 30 weeks, an SUT delivers lessons using the resource. There are 15 digital lessons to work from. Some weeks will be recapping the previous week's work, whilst other weeks will be carrying on with the digital resource. Lesson plans are provided for both digital and recap lessons if desired. This method is fantastic for schools with existing specialist music teachers (internal or external) that may not be confident on the ukulele. MPD will give these teachers lots of repertoire to work with, whilst also allowing the flexibility to insert their own material in places that require it. 3) 'Classroom Teacher-led' Method Over 30 weeks, a CT delivers lessons using the resource. There are 15 digital lessons to work from. The earlier lessons will not need recapping as much as the later lessons as there are more complex songs and tunes in the later lessons which may need several week's practice. There are backing tracks for the pupils to practise with via 4) 'Alternate Week' Method B Two year groups: Year 4 beginner, Year 5 continuous Over 30 weeks, year 4 learns via MPD which is delivered by a combination of a specialist ukulele teacher (SUT) and primary classroom teacher (CT) on alternative weeks. Year 5, who are having continuous lessons, learn more advanced material direct from the SUT. The CT recaps this material on the alternate week that the SUT teaching year 4. 7 6 Evaluation MusicPlus Digital has been piloted in 30 schools across Kent with fantastic results. After the first year of learning, 90% of schools took up MPD for a second year. MPD Evaluation Autumn Term: The following evaluative material was gathered at the end of the Autumn term We have taken evaluations from students, classroom teachers and peripatetic teachers. The information below is based on data that has been submitted up to the 27th January The students had alternate weeks of digital lessons and lessons with a music specialist. They completed a questionnaire at the end of the Autumn term 2013 after using MPD from September.
