1 Press release EECC reference study for optimized Transponder selection reveals breakthrough sensor capabilities in passive transponders Neuss, Germany, July Today the European EPC Competence Center (EECC) publishes their reference study, the annual UHF tag performance survey (UTPS). With a comparison of 361 transponders in up to 22 performance measurements per tag, this study is the worldwide standard reference for UHF transponders. This year the researchers document not only the latest developments in label and on-metal transponder technology but also include a full chapter on novel applications in the field of moisture sensors. More comprehensive than ever This year the UPTS is more comprehensive than ever, covering 206 label-based tags as well as 155 on-metal transponders. The EECC has examined a very large number of transponders in order to provide maximum value to its users. The larger the number of tags with equivalent performance and behavior, the more users can consider other characteristics such as price and ease of procurement says Conrad v. Bonin, CEO of the EECC. We developed new charts that are easy to understand so that users can compare the performance when talking to tags and listening their response. This kind of comparison is also valuable to users who manage different transponders in a reader infrastructure, or who need replacement for transponder types that are no longer manufactured. Solutions for all applications The large number of tags compared provides options for technically challenging applications. The size of on-metal tags continues to decrease. The smallest Xerafy tag is as small as a grain of rice, 7x2x2 mm. Also, on-metal tags have become super thin (0.6mm); they are hardly distinguishable from labels. The UTPS study has examined 23 different on-metal tags with can be printed with regular printers. These tags can be used as type lables in production. Their functionality is no longer impeded by dirt. The study also highlights the diversity of chips. Many types can be ordered with different storage capacity. Additionally, internal memory on chips is becoming more usable due to the fact that chips such as the new Monza R6-P now have fast write access. For the first time, the study has catalogued all special features for tags. Outlook: Additional sensor functionality

2 A separate chapter was dedicated to new tag solutions that use the fact that tags behave differently under physical influences such as heat and moisture. Chips such as the Magnus S2 of RFMicron are able to adapt its impedance based on interference factors. As a result, tags are less susceptible to physical influences. What s more though, so called Smartrac tags are using their own adaptability to deduce information about moisture of their surroundings. Therefore, the tag now provides data not just about the identity of the product it is attached to but also sensory characteristics. The tag is available as an on-metal version as well, and is already being used in the automotive industry. A true breakthrough! The new UTPS study 2016/2017 is available in print for new customers for a yearly subscription price of 495 (5 year subscription), or for 995 for a single copy. The history of the study The benchmark study UHF Tag Performance Survey (UTPS) establishes a worldwide standard in the measurement of RFID transponders. It is published every year by the EECC. Since 2011, the EECC offers manufacturers to request certification of tag performance for certain applications. In 2012, the EECC introduced the world novelty of material-dependent backlink matrices. Since 2013, the topic of chip sensitivity is covered in a separate chapter. Performance characteristics of write access to chip memory are included since Since 2015, the study analyses the susceptibility of tags caused by different reader signals. In 2016, the study adds the analysis of tag sensory functionality and documents additional features such as memory.
