4 When and why did you decide to be an entrepreneur? I decided to turn my hobby into a business in 2008 after several family and friends suggested that I could make money selling my custom cakes. It was a slow start until I decided to add the mobile dessert truck in After adding the dessert truck, the business took off! How has the Small Business Center assisted you? I have completed the Getting to the CORE of Business program, which has helped me take a closer look at my business and come up with a plan to take my business in the right direction. What is the most challenging aspect of owning your own business? The most challenging aspect of owning my own business has been hiring quality employees. This has been extremely difficult. We have reconstructed our entire hiring process. Since we have made the adjustments, our candidates have been much better. When you launched your venture, how did you get your seed funding? I received the seed money for my business from personal tax returns, bonuses at work and my 401k plan. Emma M. Cromedy, President and Head Cake Enthusiast SouthernCakeQueen, Inc. The Pitch We are Charlotte s first mobile dessert truck. We offer custom cakes, cupcakes, red velvet cheesecake brownies and other delicious treats. The Pink Lady (dessert truck) and Pinky (dessert cart) are both available for rent for birthday parties; corporate, community and school events; baby showers; and weddings. What advice would you give to other aspiring entrepreneurs? The best advice I have received is, man doesn t build a business, man builds a team and the team builds the business. I would also advise aspiring entrepreneurs to find a mentor to assist them. There is no need to reinvent the wheel.
