Joint Commission January 1994 to July 1997 on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations Oakbrook Terrace, Illinois The Joint Commission is the nation s foremost evaluator of the quality of care provided by health care organizations. Accredited organizations include more than 5,300 hospitals as well as health plans and networks, long term care facilities, and organizations that provide home care, behavioral health, laboratory and ambulatory care services. V IC E PRESID E N T F O R CORPORATE STRATEGY Corporate officer charged with the development of strategic direction and new products for an organization with an annual budget of $110 million and 1,100 employees. Represented and reported directly to the President. Responsible for projects across all parts of the organization, especially marketing, communications, government relations and product line teams. Specific accomplishments include: Conceived and constructed joint ventures to win state government contracts to evaluate quality of managed care in California, Minnesota, New York and Texas. Joint venture partners included medical societies and for-profit health care information firms.
2 Identified market needs and spearheaded new product introductions, including health care quality evaluation initiatives for HMOs, PPOs and provider service networks. Created national leadership initiatives, including the prestigious Codman award recognizing health care organizations that best demonstrate the use of outcomes measurement to improve quality of care. Activities included securing major outside funding. Brought the Joint Commission s workflow in line with modern product management practices. Created cross-disciplinary teams with profit-and-loss responsibility for each line of business. Conducted outreach and ambassadorial activities to traditional physician and health care organization stakeholders. Created new initiatives to reach out successfully to non-traditional stakeholders, including: Fortune 500 corporations, government agencies, insurance companies, and health care consultants. V IC E PRESID E N T, MA R K E T IN G A N D E XT E R N A L R E L A T IO N S Managed staff of 50 and annual budget in excess of $6 million. Areas of responsibility and specific accomplishments included: Public Disclosure Initiatives Oversaw first release to the public of previously confidential accreditation information. Made complex standards-compliance and survey information understandable to the public and the media. Overcame organized opposition from hospital associations. Created new office of performance reports and directed plan for Internet availability. Government Relations Created the organization s first federal and state lobbying capability. At federal level, succeeded in securing Joint Commission-sponsored legislative language in all five versions of proposed health reform legislation during first Clinton term. Maintained strong involvement with executive branch, including management of key HCFA relationship. Conducted lobbying activities in California, Colorado, Florida, Minnesota, New York and Washington. Retained and managed federal and state lobbying firms. Communications Rebuilt department, and managed all aspects of public relations activities including responses to hostile media during crisis situations. Established comprehensive tactical communications support including press conferences, press releases, speaking engagements, newsletters, informational mailings, and corporate reports. Marketing and Customer Service Merged previously separate departments and reorganized along product line teams. Modernized strategic and tactical approaches to marketing. Kraft General Foods Created and directed Kraft General Foods Environmental Institute. Project designed curriculum and provided educational materials about solid waste management to middle schools nationwide. Program accomplished measured goals of increasing understanding of solid waste issues (including consumer packaging) and promoting responsible citizenship action. Program received prestigious national Community Action Network annual award. Ameritech Cellular Services Launched five-state effort to defend cellular telephone services against health concerns prompted by national media exposure for consumer litigation. Directed primarily toward communications with local government agencies, this program enabled a major client to continue successfully its initiatives to construct cellular transmission facilities across the Midwest. Account expanded to include multi-state consumer marketing. S.C. Johnson Wax Procter & Gamble Media Training Defended aerosol product franchise of world s largest producer by means of a major environmental program with consumer, employee, and regulatory and legislative elements. Established partnership between client and World Wildlife Fund. Conceived and executed highly regarded national Roper Organization survey about American attitudes and behaviors regarding the environment. Created and directed highly successful environmental communications program in defense of disposable diapers for category leading, internationally recognized consumer products company. Program elements included demonstrations to consumers of recyclability and compostability of disposable diapers. Directed Chicago s leading communications training practice. Conducted training sessions for CEOs of leading corporations, top corporate management, academic and not-for-profit association leaders, physicians, athletes, civic and political leaders. JOHN B.
