This price rise is also witnessed when compared year on year in all of the countries. The UK reported the greatest weekly price increase of 14%, rising from 2.06 per kg, to 2.34 per kg. Year on year, the current price is up 45% from 1.61 per kg. The Netherlands witnessed a rise in average wholesale prices of 9% between week 6 and 7, to 2.55 per kg. This price is 9% higher than it was a year previous, from 2.18 per kg. In Germany, the average wholesale price for grapes increased 6% weekly, from 2.81 per kg, to 2.99 per kg. Year on year, this is an increase of 21%, from 2.47 per kg. (Please see new section for further information). This is a very marginal decline from the prior week s 4.72 per kg. Year on year, average retail prices are slightly down in the UK, by 5%, from 5.01 per kg. 3 6.00 AVERAGE UK GRAPE RETAIL PRICE PER KILO Week UK 2009/2010 UK 2010/2011 UK 2011/2012 UK 2012/2013 UK 2013/2014 UK 2014/2015 UK 2015/2016 During week 7 of 2016, mixed grapes were the most expensive on the market, with an average retail price of 4.24 per kg, this was then followed by white grapes at 3.84 per kg. The lowest priced grapes were red grapes at 3.64 per kg, with black grapes at 3.69 per kg. Compared against the prior week, grape prices for all varieties except white, witnessed a price fall. However, compared against the prior year, the price of black and mixed grapes is slightly up. White grapes retailed for the highest price at 3.93 per kg, with a weekly increase of 1% from 3.91 per kg. The average retail price for red grapes was 3.85 per kg, a 1% rise from 3.81 per kg. German Retail Grape Prices, per KG Week 7 Week W-O-W Average % Red % White % Grapes in the News: Grape prices in Europe have increased considerably in the last few weeks as a result of lower than expected supply from South Africa, and also delayed shipments from Capetown. Whilst Indian grapes have begun arriving on the market, the quantity is not great enough to influence the market. Add to this, Chile s lower trade volumes, due to production problems and strong US demand. However, demand still remains good, though this is being held up by retailers taking a smaller margin. Demand for early Indian grapes has remained steady in Russia for the past two months. Grapes from India are not yet ready for the European market, as the sugars are not high enough. However, demand in Europe is high for Indian grapes that meet the right specification, due to lower supplies from other countries, and so prices are higher. The Nashik region of India, is expected to see an increase in production of some 55% between December 2015 an May 2016, to 1.6 million tonnes. This increase comes as the previous season witnessed high rainfall and hail, negatively impacting production by 30% down 4

5 to 1 million tonnes. The grapes this season are reported as being very good, benefiting from good growing conditions. USDA have stated that they will invest 323,060 in surveys looking at grape pests and diseases, in 15 of their states. During 2015, Peru s fruit and vegetable exports rose 15%, to billion. One of the top export products for Peru was Red Globe grapes, and other new seedless varieties, which produced revenue of 483 million. Of its export markets, the US and EU remain the most important to Peru, at 42% and 40% of shipments respectively. The New Zealand Environmental Protection Authority (EPA), has approved an application for the import of the fungicide Esteem. Esteem is used to control powdery mildrew, and grey mould in apples and grapes. Ever increasing demand for grapes from Asia and the Middle East are presenting challenges for wholesalers. There is now year round demand for table grapes in Asia, especially in China. Whilst there has been a reported price drop in Red Globe prices, this has levelled out, and it is expected that the season will end strongly, with consistent supply from Peru and Brazil. 5
