2 Basic Course Information Meets: Mondays and Wednesdays from August 21 December 11, 2014, from 5:30 p.m. until 6:45 p.m. in DHUM 337. Text: Public Speaking: An Audience-Centered Approach by Beebe (9 th Edition) I use the stand-alone text book, not other materials bundled with it; you don t need an access code for online work. Buy the book from an online source, an electronic version, use the copies on reserve in the library, or stop by my office to use my copy. While the book will be used in this class and will be useful for your test and speeches, it s your decision to purchase it. SPC 1608: This course focuses on practical methods of speech composition, organizational pattern, and presentation; addresses the individual needs of students. [This course] meets [the] speech component of the General Education communication requirement. Prerequisites: College-level reading and writing skills are required. Course Outcomes: In this public speaking course, you will 1. Use both verbal and non-verbal elements in successful speech delivery. 2. Research and organize oral presentations on topics of your choice. You will also adapt presentation to the parameters of the assignment and the expectations of the audience in informative, persuasive, and other types of presentations. 3. Learn theories of effective persuasion and demonstrate understanding of those theories in a persuasive presentation. 4. Understand and apply ethical practices in both research and actual presentations. 5. Become an effective listener, identifying rhetorical patterns and critically evaluation quality of content and delivery techniques. 6. Learn principles of effective group communication through exercises and presentations. 7. Incorporate twenty-first century technology, including visual aids and multi-media, in your presentations. 8. Meet the Gordon Rule requirement for writing. 2

3 Dustin Lemke s 6 Values for Public Speaking 1. Public speaking will help you beyond this class. Communication Variety: I m concerned about all areas of communication in this course: how you send s to professors, how you interpersonally communicate with classmates, and how you use non-verbal signals all send messages about yourself. Open-Door Office: This class affects your life, just like I know your outside life affects this class. Freely ask questions about assignments, outside public speaking engagements you have, or life in general. I m always happy to speak with students. 2. College students are creative, intelligent souls. Student Centered: For the first few weeks, I will be leading the class. Starting early, though, students will take on the shared responsibility of conducting this class. Students will have the responsibility for setting speech schedules, running the Question of the Day, and moderating presentations. Academic Integrity: I want your assignments to be the result of your own work with research sources acknowledged. Cheating will result in zero points; further cheating will earn an F for the course. Regardless of the grade received in any Honors course or the number of Honors courses completed, any student who has committed any academic dishonesty including but not limited to cheating and/or plagiarism will be removed from the Honors Institute and, therefore, will not graduate from the Honors Institute. 3. We need each person s perspective in this class. Respect: Diversity of opinion is imperative, so you should feel safe when presenting ideas, asking questions, and disagreeing. Disrespect toward fellow students will not be tolerated. Full Participation: I expect you to fully participate in all aspects of the class. Fully answering the Question of the Day, active listening while students are speaking, asking questions after speeches, and helping run the course are all encouraged. ADA Accommodations: If you have a disability that falls within the American Disabilities Act (ADA) and requires accommodations, you should contact the Office of Services for Students with Disabilities located in the Students Services Building room 102. You may also reach the office by phone at (813) I want your full participation in the course, so please assertively come to me before you might need assistance. 4. We are in this together. Connecting with Classmates: When you enter the classroom, interact with your classmates: remove headphones and sunglasses, put phones away, make small talk, or maybe try new seat mates. Show respect by not entering the door or using your phone during speeches. 3

4 Attendance: Group dynamic is important, so I want you to attend each class and expect you to be on time and stay for the entire class. Attending will help you know your audience better, help you select better speech topics, and help you learn from the speeches your classmates give. Arriving more than 15 minutes late or leaving more than 15 minutes early will count as an absence, and I don t count any difference between an excused or unexcused absence. Attendance affects grades as follows: 0-3 absences: No penalty 4-7 absences: 5% deduction to your final grade for EACH of these absences 8 or more absences: Automatic failure of course Absence Buy Back: If you miss 4-7 times, you can buy back the absences with extra work that connects the missed class material with speeches found at To pursue this option, speak with me about the expectations. If you miss 8 or more times, there is NO buy back available for any of your absences. 5. Everyone can earn high grades. Speech Workshops: You can always visit my office or questions about assignments. I will also set aside class time when students can work on speeches together or with me. Re-do Days: You have the option to rework a poor speech and give it again for a higher grade. It s possible to earn the full points; re-do times will be non-class time. Bonus: You can earn bonus points by creating and proposing a plan of action to me. 6. Work hard; Play hard. Enjoyable Class: I want you to have a good time, so I ve planned thought-provoking yet fun activities and discussions. Please participate in activities and bring your full personality to your speeches even though we are in an educational environment. If something is not working for you, please let me know so we can fix the problem. Late Work: Turn all work in on time. If you know you will be missing class, feel free to turn work in early or arrange with me to give a speech early. Speech Requirement: At the very least, each person in class must give at 4 speeches. Some students will need to give more than that. If you don t give at least 4 speeches, you cannot pass the class. 4

These are the basic parameters that still need to be followed: Path #9 Advanced Public Speaking A 7 speeches; 5 non-speaking assignments; A or B on mid-term exam B 6 speeches; 4 non-speaking assignments; A or B on mid-term exam C 5 speeches; 3 non-speaking assignments; A, B, or C on mid-term exam Speeches: 1, Level 1 Speeches (Extemporaneous) 2, Level 1 Impromptu Speeches 1, Level 2 Speeches (Extemporaneous) 2, Level 3 Speeches (Extemporaneous); one of these with a Prezi 1, Memorized Speech or Manuscript Speech; Level 2 or 3 Non-speaking Assignments 2 of your non-speaking assignments should be your recording your speeches and analyzing them Note: You re always able to do MORE speeches than required; at times, this might be quite useful for you. For instance, before you give a Level 3 speech, you need to be making A s or B+ s on your Level 2 speeches. If you need to do an extra Level 2 speech, then you ll be a better speaker in the long run. 7

Record in-class speech; self-analysis Pass-Fail Assignments will simply receive either Pass (full points) or Fail (no points). With good faith effort and honest attempts, you will pass this course. You can re-do failed attempts. The goal of this class is to be a safe place for experimentation and practice. For assignments, a grade of 70% or more is passing; a grade of less than 70% is failing. Late Work It s important that YOU keep up with what you have done. The course does have a definite ending, so don t run out of time to give your speeches in class. Speeches need to be given in front of an audience. 8

I will post assignments on MyHCC (Blackboard), but everything should be turned in as hard copies in class. All work done outside of class should be typed in black ink and should look professional. 2. Students will be responsible for creating the schedule of presentations. Work with each other to avoid running out of time at the end of the semester. 3. Items Not Acceptable for the Classroom: weapons (guns, knives, Tasers, etc.), children, visitors, pets, alcohol, drugs, and most foods. This list is not exhaustive, so think carefully before bringing props for speeches. If you have a question, be sure to ask! 4. To be enrolled in this course, the student must apply to and be accepted into the Honors Institute. If the student is not an official member of the Honors Institute, the student will be administratively removed from this course. The removal could take place anytime during the semester, and the student would not be entitled to any refund of placement into another course. 10
