4 Endoscopic Ultrasonography (EUS) is a clinical procedure developed in the early 1980s, which combines standard endoscopy and the advantages of echography in the investigations of the gastrointestinal tract and contiguous organs. EUS has been shown to be the most effective and accurate technique for preoperative locoregional staging of GI tumors and mediastinum assessment. In order to analyse and foster the use of this technique, in cooperation with our American Colleagues from the prestigious Mayo Clinic, we have organized a Joint Meeting at the Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza Hospital in San Giovanni Rotondo. During the meeting leading European and Italian Experts will work hand-to-hand with the Mayo Clinic Experts. The three-day format will include a presentation of clinical cases, EUS live examinations and lectures on main topics. An interactive discussion between the Faculty and the Audience will lead to a better definition and understanding of the diagnostic and therapeutic opportunities offered by EUS. The policy of the Gastroenterology Department of the Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza is to provide increasingly higher quality standards of care to patients. This can be attained by continuous updates and exchanges of experience. We are confident that this Joint Meeting with the Mayo Clinic will be an occasion to pursue our goals.
