3 THE SETTING AUC New Cairo In the suburb of New Cairo on the outskirts of Cairo lies the 260-acre, state-of-the-art AUC campus. Weaving Egyptian urban and architectural traditions into the design of a modern campus, AUC New Cairo is spacious, technologically advanced and environmentally friendly. It is considered the most progressive campus in the region, receiving a special award from the Urban Land Institute in 2009 for its construction and design. It houses modern classrooms, laboratories, lecture halls and other essential facilities to support current and future teaching methods, curricula and educational technologies. Accommodation for participants from outside Cairo will be arranged in a five-star hotel near campus, with daily transportation provided to and from the hotel and campus, depending on availability. 4 STRUCTURE & METHODOLOGY IEEI s Leading Banks Post-Financial Crisis Executive Development Program consists of 14 training days in April and May The program is offered in both Cairo and Istanbul, according to the following timeline: AUC New Cairo, April 17-18, and April 22, 2013 Sabancı University, Istanbul, April 24-29, 2013 AUC New Cairo, May 18-22, 2013 The program will include interactive discussions, case studies, lectures and simulations, as well as a visit to Istanbul Stock Exchange and meetings with senior bankers in Turkey. It will conclude in Cairo with a panel of keynote speakers who will address participants. Guest speakers will include Mona El Baradie, executive director of the Egyptian Banking Institute; Ahmed Al-Gebali, managing director of QAF Investment Bank in Egypt and the chairman of the Board of Directors of UM Financial Group in Canada and (others to be confirmed). CURRICULUM Leadership and Effective Operational and Strategic Thinking This module will provide a solid understanding of current leadership thinking, including the what is it and what does it do schools of thought. Each approach affects how people lead their organizations. Leadership competencies, interdependent leadership and optimum leadership strategies, as well as how to undertake organizational transformation while maintaining ethical business practices, will be discussed in-depth. In order to execute strategies, it is essential to learn about the tools that influence and build leadership culture. Islamic Banking and Finance The Islamic banking and finance industry is gaining momentum, growing at a rate that is four times higher than its secular counterpart. There are plenty of opportunities in Islamic finance, but they need to be carefully assessed. This session will provide a clear understanding of the practice of Islamic banking and finance, as well as the development of Islamic financial products. Furthermore, it will examine the systems of governance and regulations applied to Islamic banking and financial intermediation, and will evaluate the controversies and challenges facing Islamic banking and finance. Lessons from the Last 100 Years During the last century, major market shocks altered economies and opportunities. This session will discuss what has remained the same and what has changed over the last 100 years, with a focus on the last decade, and will explore the lessons that can be learned. Ethics in Financial Markets: The Turkish Experience This module will give a general overview of Turkish banking legislation and the underlying reasons for industry crises in 1994, 2000 and Participants will investigate the restructuring that occurred following these crises and will discuss why Turkey s banking system was not adversely affected by the 2008 global economic crisis. Participants will also learn about the Banking Regulation and Supervision Agency, as well as governance principles and ethics. Capital Markets and Securities This module will cover securities and financing through capital markets, and the roles of intermediaries, issuers and investors. There will be a focus on equity capital markets, debt capital markets and international securities transaction flows. The course 3

5 will also investigate inter-market connectivity and post-trade solutions, as well as contemporary trends in capital markets in the region and around the world. Basel III and the New Capital Adequacy Landscape A globally harmonized initiative to strengthen solvency regulations following the collapse of many banks as a result of the 2008 financial crisis is ongoing until The initial Basel I and II rules were concerned with regulating capital adequacy within the banking system. The new Basel III regulations extend the requirements to meet leverage and liquidity ratios. The need to measure and appraise these requirements arises from the potential instability inherent in the fractional reserve banking model that is embraced by most conventional banking systems. Bank Management: Current Issues in Regulation and Risk Management This session will be interactive, based on case studies about capital adequacy and liquidity requirements. Participants will have the opportunity to do stress testing using real examples of major crises. It will also cover relations with regulators through a comparison between the Dodd-Frank Act and Basel III. Participants will delve into operational risk in international banks and ways for banks to become operationally sustainable. Corporate Governance Corporate governance in banks has become controversial since the 2008 financial crisis. The question of whose interests the bank board should prioritize is a crucial one. Striking the balance between the interests of shareholders, depositors and other stakeholders is pivotal for the success of a bank in today s changing environment. This session will employ both theoretical and practical perspectives, drawing extensively on recent case studies. Having strong corporate governance would require a bank s board to follow strategies that best serve the bank s stakeholders, respect the rights of employees and encourage them to work to their full potential. In addition, it would allow the bank to identify and avoid potential problems, as well as ensure the fair distribution of power and transparency within the administration. Public-Private Partnerships Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) have become a popular model for investment, especially in national infrastructure, as successful infrastructure networks are key to economic growth and productivity. This module will discuss how financial institutions can adopt a comprehensive strategy to promote PPPs in order to increase private investments in infrastructure projects. Participants will examine the legislative and institutional frameworks designed to facilitate major infrastructure projects through PPPs, in addition to policies that have to be adopted. 4

6 Small and Medium-Size Enterprise Lending As new technologies and globalization reduce the importance of economies of scale, there are more opportunities for smaller firms. Fostering small firm networks and clusters may be the fastest path to a dynamic small and mediumsize enterprise (SME) sector. The session will explore the traditional problems facing SMEs, including lack of financing, difficulties in exploiting technology, constrained managerial capabilities, low productivity and regulatory burdens. It will also examine how these problems become more acute in globalized, technology-driven environments and how financial institutions can effectively include SME finance in their product line. Mortgage Finance Mortgage finance has been the driving force for growth in most developed countries. This industry is still emerging in Egypt, despite the approval of the Mortgage Law of 2001, and has infinite potential for growth. This module will examine the mortgage finance industry in Egypt, its purpose and function, the laws governing it, mortgage terms and different types of mortgages. It will also explore the process, the reasons for the slow growth of this industry, the problems facing the market players and possible strategies for overcoming these problems. PARTNERS Egyptian Banking Institute The Egyptian Banking Institute was founded by the Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) in 1991 as an independent entity of the CBE. It is the first to be accredited in Egypt and the Middle East by the Accredited Council for Continued Education and Training. The Egyptian Banking Institute is the official training arm serving Egypt s banking sector, offering a comprehensive range of educational and training programs, and coordinating joint courses in conjunction with leading overseas training providers. Sabancı University Executive Development Unit The Executive Development Unit (EDU) was established to act as the interface between Sabancı University and the business world in the area of executive training. EDU operates as an independent unit within the university. Its facilities include a 50-bed executive hotel, conference halls and training rooms. 7 European Bank for Reconstruction and Development The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) fosters transition to market economies in countries from Central and Eastern Europe to central Asia and North Africa. The EBRD provides project financing for banks, industries and businesses both new ventures and existing companies. The EBRD also works with publicly owned companies, and provides loan and equity finance, guarantees, leasing facilities and trade finance. 8 The Application Admission Criteria: Selective enrollment of the most qualified and diverse group enhances the overall learning experience. The admission committee looks for applicants who have management responsibilities with diverse skills and experience. In seeking executives with demonstrated promise, the committee takes into account the candidate s organizational level, managerial experience, career goals and ability to contribute to the program. Language: This program is offered in English, and there is a considerable amount of reading material, such as case studies and articles. Moreover, participants are required to actively participate in the classroom and in smaller study-group discussions on a daily basis. Proven proficiency in written and spoken English is essential for the completion of assignments and engagement in fast-paced discussions. Admission Process: To apply, fill in the online application at Applications are accepted on a rolling basis and are reviewed upon submission. Applicants should apply to IEEI or to the Egyptian Banking Institute directly. Certificate: IEEI awards a certificate upon the successful completion of the program. Participants must have attended at least 80 percent of the program to receive the certificate. Fees: The fee of $11,500 covers tuition, class material, certificate and meals, as well as accommodation in Istanbul on the Sabancı campus. Participants are responsible for their visa and travel arrangements. Payment details will be provided in acceptance letters to applicants. The deadline for applications is April 9, Cancellation Policy: Candidates who submit cancellations up to 30 calendar days before the beginning of the program will receive a full refund of their tuition fees. Those who cancel less than 30 days in advance will not receive a refund, but they may nominate an acceptable substitute or attend another program within one year. Cancellation requests must be received in writing.
