1 Hill View Junior School Internet Access and E-Safety Policy The use of computers, the internet and electronic mail Introduction Hill View Junior School will allow pupils, teachers, other employees and the community access to its computers, network services and the internet. All activity, when using the network and Internet in school, must be in support of education and/or research and must be appropriate to the educational objectives of the School. Whilst pupils will often be directed to sites which provide reviewed and evaluated sources, at time, they will be able to move beyond these, to sites unfamiliar to the teacher. Users who use the Internet from the school site are responsible for everything that takes place on their computer. The problems and issues that have been highlighted by internet use do cause some concern and we are aware that children might access unsuitable material either accidentally or deliberately. The purpose of this policy is to: Establish the ground rules we have in school for using the internet. Describe how these fit into our curriculum. Demonstrate the methods used to protect the children from sites containing pornography, racist or politically extreme views and violence. Hill View believes that the benefits to children from access to the resources of the Internet far exceed the disadvantages. Ultimately, the responsibility for setting and conveying the standards that children are expected to follow, when using media and information resources, is one the school shares with its pupils and parents. 1

2 We feel that the best way forward is a combination of supervision, site filtering and fostering a responsible attitude in our children in partnership with parents. Internet access at Hill View will be filtered by our LA Internet Service Provider. All internet activities are routed through a filtration system on which unsuitable sites have been locked. At the beginning of each academic year, parents will be sent an explanatory letter and the rules which form our Internet Access Agreement. In class children discuss their conduct with their teacher and sign class agreement which is displayed in the classroom. Benefits Access to and the Internet will enable staff and children to: Explore thousands of libraries, databases, museums and other repositories of information. Rapid and cost effective world communication Gaining an understanding of people and cultures around the globe. Staff professional development through access to new curriculum materials, experts; knowledge and practice. Exchange personal communication with other Internet users around the world. Be included in Government initiatives and global educational projects, including video conferencing. Keep abreast of news and current events Take part in live discussion with experts. Publish and display work by creating personal web pages. Children s Access to the Internet Internet access will be planned to enrich and extend learning activities as an integral aspect of the curriculum. Children will: Be given clear objectives on Internet use. Be educated in responsible and effective Internet use Be supervised appropriately 2

3 Learn to search for and discriminate between valid and inappropriate material Learn to copy, save and use material found on the Internet without infringing copyright. Personal Security Guidelines Children should: Never reveal personal information either their own name or others, such as home addresses, telephone numbers and personal addresses. Not use photographs of themselves on Web pages Never meet people in person that they have contacted on the internet without parent/guardian permission. Notify their teacher whenever they come across information or messages that are dangerous, inappropriate, or make them feel uncomfortable. Be aware that the author of an or Web pages may not be the person they claim to be. Managing may contain attached documents and files. These could potentially carry viruses. Staff and adult users are requested to ensure that a virus checking programme is loaded before opening and any attachments. Access Permission Children are responsible for appropriate behaviour on the school s computer network just as they are in the classroom or on the school playground. Communications on the network are often in public nature. General school rules and our Behaviour Policy apply and it is expected that users will comply with the guidelines. Software Children should never download, load or install any software, shareware or freeware, or load any such software from any portable storage device unless they have permission from their teacher. 3

4 Children may not copy other people work or intrude into other people s files without permission. Guidelines for Staff Use of the Internet Sunderland LA guidelines for staff: No one should access Internet resources through any School computer unless they have specifically been authorised beforehand, in writing, by departmental management to do so. Authorised Staff should only access those Internet facilities relevant to their work. School Internet facilities must only be used for School business and not for personal activities. All Internet access, which takes place on the School s system, is to be owned by the School, and will be monitored and checked as is considered appropriate. Staff must only access Internet facilities under their own personal user name and password. Staff should not use School Internet facilities for periods longer than is necessary for the effective conduct of School business. Staff should not apply any authorised downloaded or uploaded materials to any computer or computer system, without being certain beforehand that the purpose is legitimate School business and the download or upload content is not harmful to any computer or computer system. Unless specifically and individually authorised in writing and in advance to do so, staff should not acquire or procure any goods and services for School business purposes via Internet sources. Members of staff, who become aware of any apparent irregular use of school computers, should notify an appropriate senior manager at the earliest opportunity. 4

5 Web Site Guidelines A web site can celebrate good work, promote the school, and publish resources for projects and homework, and links to other sites of interest. The school will ask for parental permission before using the images of pupils on the schools website. Both a child s first and last name will not be used in a photograph. This reduces the risk of inappropriate, unsolicited attention from people outside school. If the pupil is named, a photograph isn t; if a photograph is used, a name isn t Images are appropriately named - not using pupils names in image file names or ALT tags when published on the web. Images are appropriately stored and secured on the LA server. Only images of pupils in suitable dress are used to reduce risk of inappropriate use. A recognised procedure for checking the website, reporting the inappropriate images to reduce the risks to pupils, and responding to any such report is in place.
