Life safety assurance for moern builing esigns Shaft Wall Systems

Walls that enclose elevator shafts, stairwells an other vertical shafts are the lifeline of a builing. Shoul a fire occur, firefighters control the use of elevators, leaving stairwells as the only means for occupant egress or rescue within the builing. Since these walls are an important part of the builing, they must have the strength to withstan lateral loas an provie neee fire protection. High-Performance Shaft Walls

Overview USG shaft wall systems are non-loabearing gypsum wall partition assemblies constructe from outsie the shaft at each floor. Shafts are enclose early in construction, an the walls are finishe later, along with interior partitions. Installation is quick an easy, using components an application proceures familiar to rywall contractors. This system installs faster than other multilayer gypsum panel systems because it is installe from one sie, leaving the shaft free of scaffoling. The assemblies are constructe of gypsum liner panels friction-fitte into C-H stus in a progressive manner, with gypsum panels, gypsum fiber panels or cement boar applie to the face. 5 Applications Use USG shaft wall systems to construct elevator shafts, mechanical shafts, stairwells, air return shafts an horizontal membranes. These shafts are vital for vertical communication, power, water, fresh air, exhaust an a means of egres. Walls Intermittent Air Pressure Loas Elevator shafts Ieal for elevator shafts since the walls can be constructe from one sie, leaving the shaft free of scaffoling. This allows elevator equipment to be installe simultaneously. Stair shafts Accommoates stair shafts by allowing both sies of the wall to be finishe when require. For ae abuse resistance in stairwells, face layer panels can be substitute with Bran Mol Tough AR Firecoe Core, Bran Mol Tough VHI Firecoe Core or USG Fiberock Bran Abuse-Resistant Interior Panels. Intermittent Air Pressure Loas Sustaine Pressure Loas Mechanical shafts Vertical HVAC piping an uctwork can easily be containe within the system, as well as allowing for wall penetrations when require. Air shafts (unline) The system can also be use for vertical air shafts within the builing. Shafts can be unline when specific conitions are met. Unline shaft walls can accommoate sustaine air pressure up to 10 psf. See page 20 for more information. 5 USG Shaft Wall Systems

Applications Walls Soli Shafts Horizontal Stu Shafts Soli shafts are normally use to construct mechanical or uct enclosures, or in areas where a small section of shaft wall is neee for a single vertical pipe penetration. See page 21 for more information. For certain applications, equipment limitations sometimes make it ifficult to install shaft liner panels an stus vertically. This is true for walls separating shafts when there is only a structural beam provie for supporting the wall. Ceilings Shaft Wall Ceiling Membrane The 2-hr. horizontal membrane (also use in 2-hr. uct enclosures), an the membranes use as the ceiling of 1- an 2-hr. egress corriors, are shown on page 23. When the span of the 2-hr. horizontal membrane is greater than 5'-4", use UL Design K504, per etails on page USG Shaft Wall Systems

Performance Testing USG shaft wall systems provie superior safety an performance for an important builing component. Performance Tests USG shaft wall systems result from a program of extensive testing an continuous improvements to help you achieve the superior performance that your project emans. Systems provie up to four-hour fire resistance an soun ratings up to 52 STC, an resist both sustaine an intermittent lateral loas an fatigue uner cyclic lateral loaing. Testing Methos All USG proucts an systems unergo exhaustive testing to ensure that they meet exacting stanars. USG proucts are classifie as to fire resistance an fire-hazar properties. As part of this protocol, Unerwriters Laboratories (UL) perioically auits prouction of these materials to ensure compliance with necessary properties. UL is an inepenent, not-for-profit organization that has teste proucts for public safety for over a century. Proucts are manufacture an teste in accorance with recognize stanars. ASTM International is one of the largest voluntary stanars evelopment organizations in the worl, an is a truste source for technical stanars for materials, proucts, systems an services. These systems have been esigne an teste using accepte engineering practices with eflection limits of L/120, L/240 an L/360. Aitionally, limiting height tables liste herein account for flexural an shear stresses. A wie range of prouct an system combinations is available to meet performance requirements: intermittent an sustaine air pressure loaing of 5, 7-1/2, 10 an 15 psf. Testing Results Fire Protection In the event of a fire, mechanical shafts an stairs are vital channels for communication, power, water, air, exhaust an egress making the shafts the lifelines of the builing. Since it is critically important that these walls protect occupants an necessary services from fire, USG shaft wall systems have been teste for fire enurance. The primary attribute of USG shaft wall systems an its components is fire resistance. Testing supporting this attribute ensures that this critical performance component will not be compromise when properly installe. This fire testing results in the following: UL Classification of all gypsum panel components UL fire-resistance Classifications for one to four hours UL system testing with all major elevator oor manufacturers UL listing for fire amper installation Fire test ata for electrical panels, call-button boxes an other interfaces UL listing of shaft wall hea of wall See the Goo Design Practices section for more information on fire resistance. Soun Control Soun control test ata emonstrate the effectiveness of USG shaft wall systems in attenuating soun. When properly esigne an installe, USG shaft wall systems will increase comfort levels by reucing unwante noise from ajacent spaces. The stanar assembly offers 39 STC rating; 47 STC is achieve by aing 1" soun insulation within the partition cavity, an 52 STC with single-layer 3/4" Ultracoe panels an 3" soun insulation. 12 USG Shaft Wall Systems

Performance Testing Testing Results Performance Impact-Resistant for Durability Utilizing abuse-resistant an impact-resistant gypsum panels like Bran Mol Tough AR, USG Sheetrock Bran Mol Tough VHI, USG shaft wall systems meet requirements of IBC Sections an Moisture/Mol The best way to minimize amage from moisture an mol is to minimize or eliminate exposure to water before, uring an after construction. In all cases where moisture intrusion occurs, eliminate all sources of moisture immeiately. Bran Gypsum Liner Panels, Bran Mol Tough Gypsum Liner Panels an USG Sheetrock Bran Glass-Mat Liner Panels have water-resistant facings. In aition, Bran Mol Tough an Bran Glass-Mat Gypsum Liner Panels have moisture- an mol-resistant facings an a waterresistant core. When use in conjunction with goo construction practices, these proucts will minimize, but not eliminate, the risk of moisture an mol amage. 17 Performance Selector Wall Systems Limiting Heights USG shaft wall systems are engineere to withstan pressure loas an provie in-service impact resistance to ensure long-term performance an urability. Use this section to etermine the size an gauge of framing for the system you select. You will nee to know elevator pressures an other in-service emans. Structural Performance Limiting Heights Flexing Resistance for In-Service Performance Shaft walls are subjecte to both positive an negative pressures as elevator cabs rise an escen. This piston effect of an elevator in its shaft causes continual flexing of the shaft wall. In tests, USG shaft wall systems were subjecte to over 1 million full oscillation cycles to moel wall performance through the life of the builing. These tests showe that a 25 ga. J-runner is inaequate at the top or bottom of a shaft wall. As the long runner leg is continually flexe from wall eflection, it can rupture an screws can strip out an fracture from the flexing. Oscillation tests showe 24 ga. J-runners minimize these problems an are essential to long-term safety. Maximum partition heights are shown for four ifferent intermittent air pressure loas an three allowable eflections. The applie pressure loa is selecte by the esigner base on elevator cab spee an the number of elevators per shaft. Instea of using only eflection criteria, USG esign ata consier several aitional factors in etermining limiting partition heights. A. Bening stress the unit force exerte that will break or istort the stu. B. En reaction shear etermine by the amount of force applie to the stu, which will ben or shear the J-runner or cripple the stu. C. Deflection the actual eflection uner a loa. Allowable eflection is base on the amount of bening uner loa that a particular wall can experience without exceeing a prescribe ratio relate to partition height. Elevator Shaft Pressures The air pressure loa on shaft walls epens upon the elevator cab spee an the number of elevators per shaft. The following recom men ations are erive from USG tests conucte in three high-rise builings ranging in height from 17 to 100 stories. Recommene Elevator Shaft Pressure Loa Elevator velocity ft./min. We recommen that architects an contractors seek the assistance of safety professionals, especially at the construction site, because there are many factors to consier that are not inclue here. For more etaile information on safety an material hanling, please refer to Chapter 13 of The Gypsum Construction Hanbook. 1 System Performance USG conucts tests on proucts an systems to meet performance requirements specifie by various agencies. Upon written request we will provie test certification for publishe fire, soun, structural an other pertinent ata covering systems esigne an constructe accoring to our publishe specifications. Substitutions of any of the components are not recommene an are not supporte by USG. Stanars The following stanars apply: ASTM C1396: Stanar Specification for Gypsum Boar ASTM C1658: Stanar Specification for glass-mat Gypsum Panels ASTM C1325: Stanar Specification for Non-Asbestos Fiber-Mat Reinforce Cementitious Backer Units ASTM C1278: Stanar Specification for Fiber-Reinforce Gypsum Panel ASTM C840: Stanar Specification for Application an Finishing of Gypsum Boar ASTM C754: Stanar Specification for Installation of Steel Framing Members to Receive Screw-Attache Gypsum Boar, Backing Boar, or Water-Resistant Backing Boar ASTM C645: Stanar Specification for Non-Loa (Axial) Bearing Steel Stus, Runners (Track), an Rigi Furring Channels for Screw Application of Gypsum Boar ASTM C475: Stanar Specification for Joint Treatment Materials for Gypsum Wallboar Construction ASTM C1002: Stanar Specification for Steel Drill Screws for the Application of Gypsum Boar ASTM C1047: Stanar Specification for Accessories for Gypsum Wallboar an Gypsum Veneer Base ASTM D3273: Stanar Test Metho for Resistance to Growth of Mol on the Surface of Interior Coatings in an Environmental Chamber 2 Fire Resistance Use fire test ata to compare an select materials an assemblies, an to secure acceptance by the authority having jurisiction. SA100, Fire-Resistant Assemblies, shows teste fire resistance for various systems. For assemblies teste at Unerwriters Laboratories Inc. (UL), ratings are specific to the esigns teste, an o not necessarily apply to alternate proucts or construction. For example, insulation may not be ae to floor- or roof-ceiling assemblies, unless escribe in the UL esign. Aition of insulation in the conceale space between the ceiling membrane 32 USG Shaft Wall Systems

Goo Design Practices an the floor or roof structure may reuce the hourly rating of an assembly by causing premature isruption of the ceiling membrane an/or higher temperatures on structural components uner fire exposure conitions. Increasing the size or gauge of the stu (e.g., 2-1/2" C-H stu 25 gauge to 4" C-H stu 20 gauge) oes not affect the fire resistance rating of the assembly. For more etaile information, refer to the system fire resistance Performance Selector on pages Structural Criteria Builing structure supporting USG Shaftwall system must be capable of withstaning the loas applie by Shaftwall assemblies. Interior non-bearing partitions such as USG shaft wall are not esigne to carry axial loas. Limiting heights are base on stress or eflection limits for lateral loas specifie in the Performance Selector of this guie. Height limitations epen on the gauge of the steel use, imensions of the stu, stu spacing, an the allowable eflection limit. For limiting height tables, see page 17; for horizontal shaft wall span table, see page 20; an for limiting heights, unline return air shafts, see page 18. Note: Size an gauge of the stus are specifie in the limiting heights tables. Other sizes an gauges have not been evaluate for performance. 4 Control Joints Locating control joints is the responsibility of the esign professional/architect. Integrate these suggestions with Builing Movement project conitions when etermining specific locations for control joints. Control joint is a general term for methos use to minimize (not eliminate the potential for) cracking in partitions an ceilings. Specifically, a control joint minimizes cracking in the face of a partition or ceiling. At the perimeter of a partition or ceiling, it is calle a perimeter relief joint. A control joint is effective in minimizing cracking cause by tensile or compressive movement in a membrane resulting from thermal, hygrometric an structural movement. Isolate shaft wall surfaces with control joints or other means where: construction changes within the plane of the shaft wall shaft wall run excees 30' expansion or control joints occur through the builing itself in stairwells at each floor level Ceiling-height oor frames may be use as control joints. Less-than-ceiling-height oor frames shoul have control joints extening to ceiling from both corners on both sies of the partition. Treat winow openings in same manner as oors. Zinc control joints, when properly insulate an backe by gypsum panels, have been fire-enurance teste for use in one- an two-hour fire-rate walls. Proper installation of control joints in partitions an ceilings requires breaking the gypsum panels or lath behin the control joint. In ceiling construction, the framing shoul also be broken. In partitions, separate stus are use on each sie of the joint with the runner track separate at that location. 5 Pressure Loas Where shaft walls enclose elevator an return air vents, an intermittent pressures up to 15 psf are expecte, Minimizing Win Bran Acoustical Sealant is recommene at intersections with floors, ceilings, columns, ucts, etc. to seal Noise peripheries an penetrations an minimize whistling an irt accumulation ue to air movement. Sealant selection incluing joint treatment, surface coatings an etails to seal the wall uner these sustaine pressures must be provie by the esigner. See pages for information on evaluating pressure loaing an selecting the appropriate framing components base upon these esign criteria. 33 USG Shaft Wall Systems

Goo Design Practices 6 Pressure Loas Shaft walls may be use for air hanling with sustaine pressures up to 10 psf. When air pressure excees 10 psf, Air Hanling air hanling shoul be containe with a metal uct. See pages for information about air hanling an vent shaft enclosures. 7 Penetrations Penetrations of the shaft wall, such as oor frames an uct openings, require aitional reinforcement at corners to istribute concentrate stresses if a control joint is not use. Penetrations greater than 48" wie require supplemental support for the shaft wall at the opening. Where access panels or large uct penetrations occur in shafts having pressure loas, heaers, sills an ajacent channels may require reinforcing to properly istribute these loas. 8 Soun Control Use soun test ata to compare an select materials an constructions. These ata frequently are essential for securing compliance by the agency having jurisiction. See SA200, Acoustical Assemblies, for acoustical performance. Soun control refers to the ability to attenuate soun passing through a partition. The Soun Transmission Class (STC) is a wiely use rating of soun attenuation performance. It is relatively accurate for speech souns but not for music, mechanical equipment noise or any soun with substantial low-frequency energy. It is teste per ASTM E90 an rate per ASTM E413. See the Performance Selector for the STC ratings for USG shaft wall systems. Soun tests are conucte uner ieal laboratory conitions per ASTM proceures. USG proucts are assemble in a specific manner to meet the requirements of these ASTM proceures. Substitution of materials other than those teste or eviation from the specifie construction may aversely affect performance. Fiel performance epens on builing esign an careful attention to etailing an workmanship. Where these partitions are use for soun control, seal the partition perimeter with 1/4" min. roun bea of Bran Acoustical Sealant. Seal aroun all penetrations. 9 Moisture Unerstaning water an mol an its impact on the construction process an builing materials are integral to an Mol goo esign an construction practices. USG offers references an aitional sources that reinforce goo esign, construction an maintenance practices. These practices are generally recognize as necessary to minimize moisturerelate problems an the growth of mol in a builing environment. If you have aitional questions, please contact those sources or USG. The best way to aress mol is to make sure that builing materials o not get wet before an uring installation an are not expose to moisture insie the finishe builing. See Moisture/Mol in the Performance Testing section for more information. 10 Air an Water Flashing an sealants as shown in the construction ocuments an as selecte by the architect an/or structural engineer Infiltration shoul be provie to resist air an water infiltration. The flashing an sealants selecte shall be installe in a workmanlike manner in appropriate locations to maintain continuity of air/water barriers, particularly at winows, oors an other penetrations of exterior wall. 11 Vapor Retarers Water vapor control must always be consiere in the esign of exterior wall systems. Humiity an temperature conitions may require the installation of a vapor retarer to prevent moisture conensation within the wall an the resulting amage. To etermine the necessity an location of vapor retarers, a water vapor transmission an ew point analysis of the layere wall assembly shoul be conucte by a qualifie engineer. 34 USG Shaft Wall Systems

Goo Design Practices 12 Prouct Hanling Gypsum Panels an Storage Protect all gypsum proucts from exposure to excessive or continuous moisture an the elements elements before, uring an after installation. Eliminate sources of moisture immeiately. Metal Framing Protection Give light-gauge metal components such as steel stus an runners, furring channels an resilient channels aequate protection in the warehouse an on the jobsite against rusting cause by moisture. In marine areas such as the Caribbean, Floria an the Gulf Coast where chlorie an sea salt are present in combination with excessively high humiity, use of components that offer increase protection against corrosion is recommene. 13 Application Call-Button Floor Inicator an Electric Boxes Shaft walls will accommoate outlet boxes with epths up to the stu with. See page 25 for etails. Framing Attachment Runners an stus attache to beams or columns may nee to be installe before steel is spray-fireproofe. Excess fireproofing shoul be remove from runners an stus before installing shaft wall liner an sealant. Bran Gypsum Liner Panel Application Butt Joints When an installation of USG shaft wall height excees maximum available panel length, it is necessary to incorporate a butt joint between two liner panels. Stagger butt joints in ajacent panels top an bottom to prevent a continuous horizontal joint. Joint shoul be locate in top or bottom thir of wall. Horizontal joints nee not be backe by steel framing to maintain the fire-rating of the assembly. 14 Painting Systems Painting proucts an systems shoul be use that comply with recommenations an requirements in appenices of ASTM C840. For priming an ecorating with paint, texture or wall covering, follow manufacturer s irections. All surfaces, incluing applie joint compoun, must be thoroughly ry, ust-free an not glossy. Prime with USG Sheetrock Bran First Coat or with an unilute, interior latex flat paint with high-solis content. Allow to ry before ecorating. To improve fastener concealment, where gypsum panel walls an ceilings will be subjecte to severe artificial or natural sie lighting an ecorate with a gloss paint (egg shell, semi-gloss or gloss), the gypsum panel surface shoul be skim coate with joint compoun to equalize suction an texture ifferences between the rywall face paper an the finishe joint compoun before painting. Bran Tuff-Hie Primer-Surfacer skims an primes in a single application. 15 Screws USG Durock TM Bran Fasteners for Steel Framing USG Durock Tile Backer Screws for steel framing Type G screws; 1-5/8", 1-1/4". USG Fiberock Bran Panel Fasteners for Steel Framing Use corrosion-resistant Type S-12 buglehea screws for ga. steel framing. When using 25 ga. steel framing, fasteners shoul be space no greater than 8" o.c. Fasteners must be of sufficient length to ensure a minimum of 3/8" penetration into steel framing. 16 Steel Door Frames Orere separately, shoul be at least 16 ga. steel, shop prime, an have throats accurately forme to overall thickness of the shaft wall plus 3/32" minimum. They shoul be anchore at floor with 16 ga. steel plates wele to trim flanges, with provision for two power-riven anchors or equal per plate. Jamb anchors shoul be 18 ga. steel wele in jamb an screw-attache to anchors. USG reserves the right to make changes or improvements in the esign of all catalogue items without notice an without obligation to incorporate these changes or improvements in items alreay manufacture. 35 USG Shaft Wall Systems
