LONG TERM ATHLETE DEVELOPMENT (LTAD) A clear path to better sport, greater health, and higher achievement There are seven stages within the basic LTAD model: Stage 1: Active Start (0-6 years) Stage 2: FUNdamental (girls 6-8, boys 6-9) Stage 3: Learn to Train (girls 8-11, boys 9-12) Stage 4: Train to Train (girls 11-15, boys 12-16) Stage 5: Train to Compete (girls 15-21, boys 16-23) Stage 6: Train to Win (girls 18+, boys 19+) Stage 7: Active for Life (any age participant) KiwiVolley Science, research and decades of experience all point to the same thing: kids and adults will get active, stay active, and even reach the greatest heights of sport achievement if they do the right things at the right times. This is the logic behind the Long-Term Athlete Development model (LTAD). VOLLEYBALL LIFELONG PARTICIPATION MODEL (VLPM) The VLPM is designed to assist players, coaches, parents, and administrators in their planning and teaching of the game of Volleyball. Stage 1: Active Start (0-6 years) Stage 2: Fun, Fitness, and Fundamentals (girls 6-8, boys 6-9) Stage 3: Building the Volleyball Skills (girls 8-11, boys 9-12) KiwiVolley 1

2 Stage 4: Become a Volleyball Competitor (girls 11-15, boys 12-16) Stage 5: Train and Learn to Compete (girls 15-21, boys 16-23) Stage 6: Train and Learn to Win (girls 18+, boys 19+) Stage 7: Volleyball for Life (any age participant) This plan has divided the life cycle of a Volleyball player into three phases each sub-divided into series of stages having unique development goals. Introduction - KiwiVolley Stage 2 - Fun, Fitness, and Fundamentals Stage 3 - Building the Volleyball Skills Recreation KiwiVolley High Performance The VLPM is designed to provide a structured development pathway for all Volleyball participants to fulfil their potential and remain involved in sport. Introduction Start the Ball Flying 2

3 Children and adolescent newcomers learn basic knowledge and skills for sport in general and have their first Volleyball type experience. Recreation Create a culture of lifelong Volleyball participation for personal enjoyment and well-being. Volleyball is a sport well suited to the promotion of lifelong activity and wellness. Volleyball provides a form of physical activity that is easy to understand requires very little equipment or specialized facilities and involves simple physical movements that promote cardiovascular and musculoskeletal health. High performance All Volleyball participants should have the opportunity to pursue excellence through elite sport participation. For those that have the capability and desire to become truly elite, this might mean wearing the uniform of their National Team as they attempt to reach their full potential at the highest level possible in the sport of Volleyball. PHYSICAL LITERACY Individuals who are physically literate move with competence and confidence in a wide variety of physical activities in multiple environments that benefit the healthy development of the whole person Physically literate individuals consistently develop the motivation and ability to understand, communicate, apply, and analyse different forms of movement. They are able to demonstrate a variety of movements confidently, competently, creatively and strategically across a wide range of health-related physical activities. These skills enable individuals to make healthy, active choices that are both beneficial to and respectful of their whole self, others, and their environment. 3

4 Fundamental Movement Skills (FMS) Skills and activities fall under three fundamental movement skill categories: Locomotor skills involve the body moving in any direction from one point to another. Locomotor skills include: o Walking o Running o Dodging o Jumping o Hopping o Skipping. Stability skills involve the body balancing either in one place (static) or while in motion (dynamic). Stability skills include: o Landing o Balance (static and dynamic) o Rotation. Manipulative skills involve handling and controlling objects with the hand, the foot or an implement (stick, bat or racquet). Manipulative include: o Throwing and catching o Striking with the hands, feet and an implement (e.g. kicking, volleying, batting and dribbling). 4

5 Introduction (Entry level) KiwiVolley Stage 2 - Fun, Fitness and Fundamentals Participants Females: 6 to 8 years old Males: 6 to 9 years old Many participants will move from Volleyball to other sport programs Amount of time in Volleyball The child should participate in as many activities as possible: Ideally 4 per week (one or two 60 to 90 minute Volleyball sessions and two in other sports or activities Be physically active for the other three days of the week. Gymnastics and Athletics are excellent options. Season duration: 12 to 20 weeks per year Physical Literacy Physical Literacy is the primary goal at the Fun, Fitness, and Fundamental Stage. Introduce children to as many new and different movement patterns as possible. Young athletes need to have a virtual warehouse of athletic based skills in order to reach optimal levels. The value of basic "games" such as tag, tug of war, obstacle courses and relays that improve the child s athleticism should not be underestimated. The physical capacities (body awareness, strength, postural control, flexibility, speed, agility, balance, coordination, plus more) that children acquire towards the end of Stage 2 through active play will be beneficial for both competitive and recreational activities in any sport. Growth and development also influence the capacity to learn motor skills. Rapid growth during puberty makes it difficult to achieve stability in basic coordination skills. Females develop coordination faster than males. Children are more skilful in gross movements involving large muscle groups than in precisely coordinated movements involving interaction of small muscles Development of fundamental movement skills is age related, not age dependent. When teaching children to develop FMS, it must be done in a manner that is appropriate and sensitive to individual needs and abilities. o Fundamental Movement Skills o Manipulation skills o Fundamental Volleyball Skills 5

6 Environment Create conditions that affect the way the children participate: Instil the love of movement and sport through active participation. It is not about developing great athletes or love of winning. Kids should have an opportunity to learn by discovery the goal is to stimulate their curiosity, desire and willingness to participate. Things have to be fun and not so organized. They will learn by doing, not listening and watching. Active participation. Fast, continuous, vigorous movement. Aerobic play and games should make up most of the child s daily physical activity. No pressure to achieve. Children should not be afraid to make mistakes. Mistakes happen as part of the learning process. Develop self-confidence and a positive attitude. Let them discover how good they can be. This is a sampling stage. Children should sample a wide range of sport activities and Volleyball should one of these sports. Social May be some difficulty in transitioning from individual to team play. Use small groups to teach a positive interaction with peers. Team activities. Games should be considered an extension of practices, another opportunity to learn: Concept of sharing, i.e. passing Awareness of others and objects around them and follow their movement Modified game, Modified equipment The cornerstone characteristics of Volleyball can be changed and adjusted to learn Fundamental Movement Skills in a positive, fun way. Modify the elements of Volleyball to create children friendly versions that resemble adult Volleyball yet allow the kids to play at their level. The following lists some successful modifications that maximize involvement (i.e. playing time, number of contacts with the ball) in a safe and fun way. Playing area Reduce court size Badminton court, Sportime net systems Mix up the dimensions long and narrow or short and wide Net Height adjust to age, ability and outcome Equipment Balls should be Light (Official adult ball is 260 to 280 grams): Mikasa SKV 5 Kids Volleyball 6.0 ounces (170 grams) Circumference (Official adult ball is 25.6 to 26.3 inches or cm): Mikasa SKV 5 Kids Volleyball 6.0 ounces (170 grams) Size inches ( cm) 6

7 Soft and flexible: Cover should take the sting out of striking the ball foam backed rubber or soft cloth fabric Number of players per team 2, 3, or 4 Scoring No scorekeeping. The focus is on play and not finding a winner. 7

8 Introduction (Entry level) KiwiVolley Stage 3 - Building Volleyball Skills Participants Females: 8 to 11 years old Males: 9 to 12 years old To the onset of growth spurt: FEMALES: Occurs at about 12 years of age. The sequence of developmental events may normally occur 2 or even more years earlier or later than average. MALES: Occurs about 2 years later than females. The sequence of developmental events may occur 2 or more years earlier or later than average. Early maturing boys may have as much as a 4 year physiological advantage over their late maturing peers. Eventually the late matures will catch up when they experience their growth spurt. Amount of time in Volleyball Maximum of two 60 to 90 minute Volleyball sessions per week. All children should participate in as many as possible other sports. Participate in other sports 2 3 times per week. Duration of Volleyball season: 12 to 20 weeks per year Physical Literacy Children between the ages of 8 and 11 are at a peak stage for nervous system development. This means that most of their body awareness, coordination, movement mechanics and balance will be developed by the age of 12 making it a critical time for youth athletes to train. Participants will continue to develop, extend and refine agility, balance, coordination Major skill learning stage: all basic sport skills should be learned before entering Stage 4 Building a Volleyball Competitor. Focus On the development of: This is a major skill learning stage Critical stage for Physical Literacy (Fundamental Movement: Object Control: and Fundamental Sport Skills) o Many children will also use this stage as an entry level o Physical Literacy skills acquired in Stage 2 Fun, Fitness, and Fundamentals should be taken to a higher level 8

9 o These skills are the cornerstones of athletic development. Volleyball skills start to be emphasized: overhand pass; forearm pass; spike; block; and serve. Volleyball is a skill based sport. Acquiring proper basic techniques will ensure successful participation in recreational or competitive Volleyball. Simple, developmentally appropriate Volleyball tactics can be used to play modified team Volleyball. Participation in other sports is still encouraged. Focus on fundamental movement skills developing movement not muscle. Balance, agility, quickness, core stability, posture, reactivity and strength will be trained through fun and challenging drills. Environment Create conditions that affect the way the children participate: Competition Single sport training and competition as well as team sport positioning in team sports should be avoided as it promotes one-sided physical, technical, and tactical development and increases the likelihood of injury and burnout. The annual competition calendar for adolescents should reflect the focus on training and not on competition. A 70% training to 30% competition ratio is recommended. The 30 % includes matches and competition specific training. Volleyball Skills Team activities: o Players can learn about communication skills and values such as respect, honesty, and integrity - values in dealing with others. Should have an opportunity to learn new skills and improve previously learned skills Technical skills can be consolidated: o Individual: perform skills in game sequence block and attack or pass and attack or block and block, etc. o Multiplayer: 2 players; 3 players; activity away from the ball Volleyball Tactics Emphasis should be on applying the basic skills to game like situations. The players should make decisions on when to use the skills and how the skill should be properly applied. Team play o No switching positions or specialization. Play each position in the rotational order. o No Libero 9
