8 What do Cornell Notes Look Like? Here is what lined Cornell Note Paper looks like. 1. ESSENTIAL OR GUIDING QUESTION 3. CHUNK THE NOTES BY DRAWING A HORIZONTAL LINE BETWEEN CONCEPTS 2. TAKE NOTES ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE PAGE AS YOU USUALLY WOULD - JUST SKIP LINES BETWEEN CONCEPTS. 4. CREATE A QUESTION TO GO ALONG WITH EACH SECTION, AND PLACE IT IN THE LEFT COLUMN. 5. SUMMARIZE THE NOTES BY RECAPPING THE IDEAS AND ANSWERING EACH QUESTION

9 CORNELL NOTE PAPER FORMATS THERE ARE SEVERAL TYPES OF CORNELL NOTE PAPERS FOR VARIOUS SUBJECTS, SUCH AS: CORNELL GRAPH PAPER DOT PAPER FOR MATH BLANK PAPER FOR ART AND OTHER SUBJECTS CORNELL MUSIC BAR PAPER THERE S EVEN A STRIP YOU CAN ADD TO TEACHER-CREATED NOTES THAT WILL HELP YOU TURN YOUR COPIED NOTES INTO CORNELL NOTES.

10 BUT WHAT HAPPENS IF I DON T HAVE CORNELL NOTE PAPER? I M SO GLAD YOU ASKED! WOLVES ARE RESOURCEFUL, SO IF WE ARE WITHOUT CORNELL NOTE PAPER, WE CAN USE AN ELECTRONIC COPY ON OUR IPADS, OR WE CAN MAKE OUR OWN!! TAKE OUT ONE SHEET OF LOOSE-LEAF PAPER, AND WE LL LEARN HOW TO TAKE CORNELL NOTES USING REGULAR LINED PAPER.

11 STEP 1: SET UP YOUR PAPER Write name, class, period, date, topic, standard/objective in heading. Leave 1/3 of the paper on the left for questions and 2/3 on the right for notes. Leave 2 inches on the bottom of each page for summary. Be prepared to actively listen and take notes. If Cornell notepaper is provided, upon entering the classroom. Write name, class, period, date, topic, standard/objective in heading. Be prepared to actively listen and take notes.

12 STEP 2: ESSENTIAL QUESTION EACH DAY, YOUR TEACHER WILL POST THE ESSENTIAL QUESTION FOR THE DAY S LESSON. YOU WILL RECORD THE ESSENTIAL QUESTION IN THE SPACE ABOVE YOUR NOTES ON YOUR CORNELL NOTE PAPER. FOR TODAY S LESSON, WRITE THE FOLLOWING ESSENTIAL QUESTION: HOW CAN I USE CORNELL NOTES TO IMPROVE MY RETENTION OF INFORMATION COVERED IN CLASS AND TO IMPROVE MY TEST SCORES?

13 STEP 3: TAKE NOTES HERE S WHAT STAYS THE SAME: YOU LL TAKE NOTES AS USUAL FROM YOUR TEACHER S LESSON OR LECTURE. HERE S WHAT S DIFFERENT: YOU LL WRITE THOSE NOTES ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF YOUR PAPER, AND YOU LL SKIP LINES BETWEEN CONCEPTS OR TOPICS.

14 STEP 3: NOTE TAKING CONT. Take notes while listening to a lecture from the teacher, reading a textbook or novel, watching a video, solving a math problem, participating in a science lab, engaging in Socratic Seminar, and while participating in tutorials, etc. Listen and take notes in own words paraphrase what you hear. Leave spaces for revisions by skipping lines between ideas. Abbreviate words and use symbols, when appropriate. Write in phrases (not complete sentences). Use bullets or lists, when possible. Use indentation to show relationships between ideas. Know what to write: important information vs. trivial information. Recognize cues, This is important... This may be on the next test... and repeated information. Incorporate teacher s note taking style/requirements on the right side outline style, diagrams, graphs, illustrations, etc.

15 LET S PRACTICE! ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF YOUR PAPER, TAKE NOTES AS YOU NORMALLY WOULD ON THE INFORMATION I M GOING TO SHARE WITH YOU ALOUD. BE SURE TO SKIP LINES BETWEEN IDEAS AND CONCEPTS. HERE GOES. LISTEN CAREFULLY AND BEGIN TAKING NOTES AS I READ TO YOU WHAT IS KNOWN AS THE CURVE OF FORGETTING.

16 STEP 4: CHUNK YOUR NOTES NOW THAT YOU VE TAKEN NOTES FROM THE LECTURE, TAKE YOUR PEN OR PENCIL AND DRAW A HORIZONTAL LINE ACROSS YOUR ENTIRE PAPER WHERE YOU VE SKIPPED LINES. NOW, YOU HAVE CHUNKED THE TEXT INTO SECTIONS.

17 STEP 5: IDENTIFY THE MAIN IDEA FOR EACH SECTION READ EACH CHUNK OF NOTES AND DETERMINE THE MAIN IDEA FOR THAT SECTION OF NOTES. WHAT IS THAT SECTION MAINLY ABOUT?

18 STEP 6: CREATE A QUESTION FOR EACH SECTION OUR GOAL IS TO MAKE BETTER GRADES ON OUR ASSESSMENTS BY RETAINING AS MUCH INFORMATION AS POSSIBLE, SO THINK OF A QUESTION (ONE THAT MIGHT POSSIBLY BE ON THE TEST YOU KNOW THERE S A TEST COMING) AND WRITE IT IN THE LEFT COLUMN. NEXT TO THE CHUNK OF INFORMATION THAT HELPS TO ANSWER IT. TRY TO MAKE YOUR QUESTIONS SPECIFIC, LEVEL 3 QUESTIONS. EXAMPLE - (LEVEL 1 QUESTION) WHEN SHOULD I REVIEW MY NOTES? (LEVEL 3 QUESTION) HOW IS REPETITION DIRECTLY LINKED TO LEARNING IN THE MODEL? TAKE A MOMENT AND DEVELOP A QUESTION FOR EACH CHUNK OF NOTES.

19 STEP 7: SUMMARIZE SUMMARIZING IS DIFFERENT FROM PARAPHRASING. WHEN YOU SUMMARIZE YOUR NOTES, YOU ARE WRITING THE ANSWERS TO THE QUESTIONS YOU VE WRITTEN IN ONE SIMPLE SENTENCE. YOUR SUMMARY SHOULD ADDRESS ALL OF THE QUESTIONS AND PROVIDE INFORMATION FROM ALL CHUNKS OF NOTES.

20 GOOD SUMMARY VS. BAD SUMMARY BAD SUMMARY: USING CORNELL NOTES WILL HELP STUDENTS GET BETTER GRADES BECAUSE IT REQUIRES REPETITION (TOO VAGUE). GOOD SUMMARY: CORNELL NOTETAKING IS BENEFICIAL BECAUSE IT HELPS STUDENTS RETAIN INFORMATION BY THE REPEATED USE OF THE NOTES. IF STUDENTS REVIEW THEIR NOTES FOR 10 MINUTES WITHIN 24 HOURS OF TAKING NOTES, FOR 5 MINUTES A WEEK LATER, AND 2-4 MINUTES A MONTH LATER, NEARLY ALL INFORMATION WILL BE RETAINED BY STUDENTS. (ADDRESSES ALL CHUNKS OF INFORMATION)

21 I VE TAKEN MY C-NOTES, SO WHAT S NEXT? STEP 8 : INTERACT WITH YOUR NOTES THE NEXT THING YOU LL DO IS REVISE AND EDIT YOUR NOTES. YOU LL NEED THINGS LIKE COLORED PENS (AT LEAST BLACK, BLUE, AND RED) AND HIGHLIGHTERS. HERE S WHAT YOU LL NEED TO DO: NUMBER YOUR CHUNKS OF NOTES. UNDERLINE THE MAIN IDEA. CIRCLE KEY WORDS AND VOCABULARY. HIGHLIGHT IMPORTANT INFORMATION. DELETE OR CROSS OUT INFORMATION THAT IS NOT IMPORTANT. PLACE A QUESTION MARK (?) NEAR PLACES WHERE YOU ARE CONFUSED. PLACE AN ASTERICK (*) OR A NEXT TO QUESTIONS THAT MIGHT APPEAR ON THE TEST. CREATE VISUALS /PICTURES TO HELP YOU REMEMBER INFORMATION. TAKE A COUPLE OF MINUTES TO DO THE ABOVE ITEMS.

22 STEP 9: REVIEW FOR REPETITION HOW OFTEN WILL I REVIEW MY NOTES? NOW, HERE S WHERE CORNELL NOTES REALLY WORK FOR YOU. FOLLOW THE MODEL FOR REVIEWING NOTES. SPEND 10 MINUTES REVIEWING YOUR NOTES ON THE FIRST DAY (WITHIN 24 HOURS OF GETTING THE INFORMATION). REVIEW NOTES A WEEK LATER (7 DAYS) FOR 5 MINUTES 30 DAYS LATER, REVIEW YOUR NOTES FOR 2 4 MINUTES. THAT S IT! YOU VE RETAINED NEARLY ALL OF THE INFORMATION COVERED! YOU RE SO CLEVER!
