3 What is planning? A world that is planned well should be Sustainable Fairer Efficient Organised Healthy Safe Enjoyable! A world that is not planned will be Un-sustainable Unfair Un-coordinated Sprawling Unhealthy Dangerous

4 This leads to questions about the use of land such as: Where could people go to work? Where can people play and relax? How will people move around? What will a place look like in 20 years time? What about all the waste we produce? What Future do local Planners people think about these things?

5 The town planning profession has to deal with changing places Today there are 180,000 more people living in urban areas than there were yesterday. 6 Who is the RTPI? The Royal Town Planning Institute is the UK's leading planning body for spatial, sustainable and inclusive planning and is the largest planning institute in Europe with over 23,000 members. Supporting our members throughout their professional careers is at the heart of everything we do. Trudi Elliott, RTPI Chief Executive The RTPI is: A membership organisation and a Chartered Institute responsible for maintaining professional standards and accrediting world class planning courses nationally and internationally. A charity whose charitable purpose is to advance the science and art of planning (including town and country and spatial planning) for the benefit of the public. A learned society. We also run Planning Aid England and have a trading company, RTPI Services Limited.

7 Planning history The term town planning was first used in Britain in The statutory practice of town planning stemmed from the Housing, Town Planning, etc Act 1909, which permitted local authorities under the close supervision of the Local Government Board to prepare such schemes for land in course of development, or likely to be developed. The schemes were particularly appropriate for suburban areas, where they regulated both the layout of land and the density of development, and reserved land for new highways. RTPI Royal Charter signed in 1914 To advance the study of town-planning, civic design and kindred subjects, and of the arts and sciences as applied to those subjects; To promote the artistic and scientific development of towns and cities; To secure the association, and to promote the general interests of those engaged or interested in the practice of town-planning.

10 Bringing planning to the classroom 2014 RTPI President Cath Ranson: "The RTPI Future Planners project offers an exciting and important opportunity to inspire a younger generation. Aims and objectives Raise awareness of planning with school students aged RTPI volunteers foster discussions with students about the importance of town/spatial planning Future studies, skills and job opportunities are highlighted

11 Future planners phase 1 summary: 150 MRTPI volunteers are participating as ambassadors Ambassadors include planning students and graduate planners Flexibility around content to ensure relevance and engagement with local area

12 Future planners phase 2 priorities: Dovetailing content with education curriculum as much as possible Practical materials to assist teachers in related subjects such as Geography Cross-cutting themes of inclusivity and diversity for the planning profession We are keen for input from teachers, examiners and geographers

13 In considering curriculum content and RTPI materials, 3 shared themes are a good starting point: Political challenges balancing interests of citizens, the economy and environment Citizenship how citizens can influence the design of civic spaces and civil projects Resource management preserving our cultural heritage and sustainably creating the future Clear links to geography knowledge and skills

20 Studying planning The RTPI accredits a large number of undergrad and post grad degrees across the UK and Ireland. We also accredit planning schools in South Africa, Botswana and Hong Kong. Alignment with Geography is strong at many institutions and some have joint BSc undergraduate programmes.
