The money you raise will help us make a real difference to the lives of vulnerable children, young people and their families across the UK. As one of the UK s leading children s charities, Barnardo s works directly with over 200,000 children, young people and their families every year. We run over 900 vital services across the UK, including counselling for children who have been abused, fostering and adoption services, vocational training and disability inclusion groups. Every Barnardo s service is different. But each one believes in the potential of every child and young person no matter who they are, what they have done or what they have been through. With the right help, committed support and a little belief, even the most vulnerable children can turn their lives around. There isn t anything I wouldn t do for my three kids and realise that not every child is so lucky. I wanted to do something, however much I could to help out, and I felt Barnardo s was a very worthy charity Jez Horgan 2

3 You can make a difference Greg s story I was 12 when I met this bloke online. He said he was 18 but he was actually 26. He made me think we were close, then started giving me money, drugs and alcohol to have sex with other men. Barnardo's made me feel safe. They helped me see it wasn't my fault and probably saved my life. Greg Abigail and Esmé s story Esmé has Rett Syndrome and needs one-toone support. She gets tired easily, which really affects her movement and balance. Since she s been going to Barnardo s Little Breaks she s got much more confident. She interacts with other children now and loves getting involved. It s been great for her and for us. Abigail and Esmé I ve fostered 29 children since I started with Barnardo s. I always wanted to work with children, and I feel very strongly about breaking the cycle keeping them out of care by giving them a loving and stable home. Gail 3

5 Fundraising ideas Get active At work Auction of promises Office sweepstake Guess who will win the next Grand National or who ll be Christmas number one! Hold a bake sale Swim Ask staff to donate prizes including baked goodies, making packed lunches for a week, guitar lessons and flower arranging courses. Bring everyone together and auction them off to raise lots of money. Swim or row the length of the channel at your local leisure centre. Walk Design your cycle route and get fit whilst raising money. With friends Brunch Organise a long walk and invite friends and family to take part too. Bring your colleagues together, everyone loves cake! You can transform lives by fundraising in lots of ways Do your own thing Bike Host a brunch with friends and ask for donations. Give in celebration Ask your friends to donate to Barnardo s rather than a gift on your birthday. Party time Karaoke Have a fancy dress party dressed as your favourite childhood character. Impress your friends with your fantastic voice and get them to join in too! Charge per song. Guess who the baby is Collect baby photos of famous celebrities and charge your friends to guess who they are. Shhhhhh Get sponsored to be silent for the day. 5 With your local Community Pancake race Hold a pancake race and charge your family and friends to take part. Put on a street party Bring your neighbours together for lots of fun. You can organise raffles and games to raise extra money. Host a Ball Dust off the tuxedo and raise money for Barnardo s from ticket sales.

6 How to organise your own fundraiser Focus There is a huge number of tried and tested ways to fundraise in the community you just need to find the right one for you. After the event Don t forget to thank everyone who helped out on the day. Then count up your money and send it to Barnardo s using our paying in form download it at org.uk/fundraising-materials. Set a target If you set a target you are more likely to achieve it. Once you ve set your fundraising goal, tell everyone! On the day Write a checklist of all the things you need to do so you don t forget anything. If possible, announce the amount you anticipate raising at the event, remind everyone why you re raising the money and say a big Thank you for coming. Get the basics right Think carefully about what space you ll need. Give yourself plenty of time to plan and get your fundraiser in people s diaries, and set a budget of likely costs involved. Local media You can t go wrong with promoting your fundraising activity through local media. Get in touch with newsdesks at local newspapers or try to get the local radio and television stations interested in your event. Materials Why not see if you can borrow what you need for your fundraising rather than pay for it? We can also provide you with materials, from sponsorship forms to balloons. Check out org.uk/fundraising-materials or call us on Spread the word Tell people why you are holding the event and what impact it will have. A wonderful way to spread the word is on social networking websites such as Facebook and Twitter. 6

7 Stay safe and legal Think your fundraising through, and stay safe. The safety and wellbeing of you and everyone involved in your event is important to all of us at Barnardo s. You can find safety guidelines on our website at Food poisoning is no way to reward people for attending your fundraiser, so make sure you follow our food safety guidelines. By organising your own fundraising event in aid of Barnardo s, you are responsible for making sure the event poses no risk to others. You may need to arrange public liability insurance for some events. Keep cash secure, make sure it is counted and checked by two people and that it is banked or sent to us as soon after your event as possible. You will need a license to collect money in a public place. If it s somewhere like a pub, railway station or supermarket, you will need to ask the manager s permission. Most venues will already have a licence to sell or supply alcohol. If your venue does not, you can apply for one at your local authority. Small raffles held as part of a larger event are great! 8 Make your money go further Online tips Setting up an online fundraising page is quick, easy and very effective. Visit barnardos or Donate to your own fundraising page. If you donate 10, chances are that others will follow your lead. People who use Twitter and Facebook to promote their fundraising page raise nearly ten times more than people who don t so get tweeting. 65 per cent of sponsors would give again if they were asked. So don t be afraid to ask for more if you re short of your target. 20 per cent of online donations are received after a fundraiser has finished, so keep talking about your event once it s over! Make it easy for people! 20 per cent of all donations to Justgiving come from Justtextgiving, a service that allows people to donate to your Justgiving page by a text message. Offline tips Raise an extra 100 with a raffle. You ve already done the hard work organising your event now watch your fundraising total rocket by running a raffle alongside it. Get friends and local shops to donate prizes. If your sponsors are UK taxpayers, we can claim Gift Aid on their donations at no extra cost. That s another 1 for every 4 you raise. So don t forget to use the sponsor form enclosed with this pack to collect even more money. You can also download it here: fundraising-materials. Your company may have a matched giving scheme. Why not ask them if they ll match what you raise? You could double your money! Your work colleagues might be able to help ask them to sponsor you, spread the word or volunteer at your event. 8

9 How to send us the money you raise Once you ve collected all the money from your fundraising event, there are lots of ways to pay it in. By phone Call us on to make a donation by credit or debit card. By post There is a paying-in form included with this pack, and it s also available to download at Fill in the form and post it with your completed sponsorship forms and your cheque, postal order or CAF voucher, made payable to Barnardo s. Or you can write your card details on the form and we will take the payment for you. Please do not send cash in the post. Online You can pay directly into our bank account with online banking.
