1 STEWART COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL BUSINESS TECHNOLOGY BUSINESS MANAGEMENT SYLLABUS Instructor: Connie Baggett Classroom: School phone: ext Website: Course Description: Students in Business Management will develop a foundation in the many activities, problems, and decisions that are intrinsic to the management of a successful business, as well as an appreciation for the importance of these responsibilities. Areas to be examined include business organization, ethical and legal responsibilities, communication, decision-making, personnel, safety, professional development and related careers. By gaining an understanding of these areas, students will be better prepared to enhance the business decisions of tomorrow. Expectations In order to complete activities in this class, students will be required to have an account through gmail.com. If students do not have a gmail account, we will set those up during the first few days of class. Research and other projects will require the students use the Internet often. Please be sure you are aware of the SCSS s Acceptable Use Policy located in the SCHS Student Handbook furnished to each student. In order for this class to be fulfilling, order and discipline must be maintained in the classroom at all times. The following are the basic behaviors I expect of all students: 1. Be Here Attendance is important and is a crucial element in a student s final grade. If the student is not in class they cannot participate and the student will likely get behind. If it is necessary to be absent, student may make up work in the mornings. I am at school each day by 6:30 a.m. Afternoon hours are available by appointment. I expect students to be in class and on time every school day! 2. Be Prepared--Be prepared and prompt. Always bring all necessary items to class, such as books, paper, and writing utensil(s). Students will be required to sign the late book if they must go back to their locker. 3. Be Respectful--The proper teaching environment will be maintained at all times. Disruptions will not be tolerated. Equipment should be used only at appropriate times and in appropriate ways. 4. Be Responsible--Students should always be in compliance with the SCSS s Acceptable Use Policy regarding technology and the SCSS s PBS guidelines for behavior. Be honest with yourself and with the teacher. Other more specific classroom expectations will be discussed in class and the global school expectations are in the student handbook. Consequences for inappropriate behavior will follow the Stewart County School System s Positive Behavior Support Program. Resources: Textbook: Business Management, 13th Edition, Southwestern Publishing, Burrow and Kleindl, 2013 Teen Entrepreneur Simulation Computer software: Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, Kuder Assessment and Career Inventory software, various Internet sites Teacher created materials Instructional Strategies Lectures/discussions overhead presentations Textbook chapter readings Questions and answers Computer demonstration and applications Research activities and projects/surveys/self-evaluation Guest speakers Outside resources (i.e. websites, magazines, journals, etc.) Assessments (10% will be deducted for all late assignments) Chapter objective/application tests, career/employment Homework/class work completion Unit Test Projects

2 Students in Career and Technical Education course will be evaluated on standards and performance indicators using the Competency Attainment Rubric on the last page of this packet. Notice there are five categories down the left hand side of the rubric and four levels of attainment across the top. CTE teachers will use this rubric to report to the state department at what level students perform on the standards/performance indicators listed below: Standard 1 The student will develop and apply concepts related to human relations, safety, career development, communications, and leadership skills for a global workplace. 1.1 Demonstrate sensitivity to personal, societal, corporate, and governmental responsibility to community and global issues. 1.2 Demonstrate the interpersonal, teamwork, and leadership skills needed to function in diverse business settings, including the global marketplace. 1.3 Communicate effectively as writers, listeners, and speakers in diverse social and business settings. 1.4 Apply the critical-thinking and soft skills needed to function in students multiple roles as citizens, consumers, workers, managers, business owners, and directors of their own futures. 1.5 Analyze and follow policies for managing legal and ethical issues in organizations and in a technology-based society. 1.6 Investigate the life-long learning skills that foster flexible career paths and confidence in adapting to a workplace that demands constant retooling. 1.7 Assess personal skills, abilities, aptitudes, and personal strengths and weaknesses as they relate to career exploration and apply knowledge gained from individual assessment to research and develop an individual career plan. 1.8 Examine the goals and principles of Future Business Leaders of America. 1.9 Investigates online and office safety procedures and passes a written safety examination with 100% accuracy Demonstrates parliamentary procedure through office staff/chapter organizational meetings Apply appropriate typography concepts to industry documents. Standard 2 The student will analyze the basic role of business in our society. 2.1 Interpret the types and nature of business. 2.2 Analyze opportunities, problems, and obligations of business. 2.3 Evaluate the various careers available in business. Standard 3 The student will analyze ways the social and ethical environment of business has changed. 3.1 Examine the changing nature of the population and adaptations to these changes. 3.2 Analyze relationships of ethics to a socially responsible business. 3.3 Predict the impact of change on the future of business. 3 Standard 5 The student will examine the international environment of business. 5.1 Debate issues related to the balance of trade between countries and their significance to our economy. 5.2 Interpret the role of government in establishing parameters to international trade. 5.3 Relate issues of international trade to the operation of a business. Standard 6 The student will examine how effective decision-making skills are used in the management process. 6.1 Classify the steps in an effective decision-making process. 6.2 Evaluate the procedures for making everyday managerial decisions. Standard 7 The student will describe the communication process and any barriers to communication, including ways to improve communication. 7.1 Illustrate terms needed for effective communication. 7.2 Analyze the networks of communication. 7.3 Interpret why communication is important. 7.4 Examine the various barriers to communication. 7.5 Analyze ways that businesses may improve their own communication. Standard 8 The student will analyze the steps in strategic business planning and the implementation of the necessary goals. 8.1 Illustrate the need for strategic business planning. 8.2 Assess the goals to be included in strategic business planning. 8.3 Analyze the steps in developing a strategic business plan. 8.4 Create a business plan. Standard 9 The student will examine various types of organizational structures. 9.1 Compare and contrast the types of organizational structures used in businesses. Standard 10 The student will analyze the role of human resources in a business organization Examine the types of activities that occur in a human resources department Analyze methods of selecting new personnel and promoting, transferring, and releasing current personnel Analyze how laws and regulations affect a human resource department Compare employee benefits that may be available through an employer. Standard 11 The student will consider the ways a manager can motivate through leadership Analyze the needs of employees Discuss leadership skills integral to groups Evaluate strong leadership skills. Standard 12 The student will examine ways to manage conflict and stress in the workplace Demonstrate an understanding of the nature of conflict and the difference between beneficial and undesirable conflict Compare and contrast the methods of resolving conflict. Standard 13 The student will analyze how to bring together a diverse workforce Define diversity and the importance of having it in an organization Determine the characteristics needed to bring together people from varying backgrounds in order to use their talents toward a common goal.
