2 SUBJECT AREA PHILOSOPHY The purpose of business education is to provide students with the knowledge necessary for making responsible decisions as a consumer of goods and services. The curriculum includes sequential courses designed to provide students with the skills and knowledge necessary for employment as well as for post-secondary educational opportunities.

3 DISTRICT EDUCATIONAL GOALS 1. To acquire basic skills in obtaining information solving problems, thinking critically and communicating effectively. 2. To acquire a stock of basic information concerning the principles of the physical, biological and social sciences, the historical record of human achievements and failures and current social issues. 3. To become an effective and responsible contributor to the decision-making processes of the political and other institutions of the community, state, country and world. 4. To acquire the knowledge skills and understanding that permit him/her to play a satisfying and responsible role as both producer and consumer. 5. To acquire job entry level skills and, also, to acquire knowledge necessary for further education. 6. To acquire the understanding of and the ability to form responsible relations with a wide range of other people, including but not limited to those with social and cultural characteristics different from his/her own. 7. To acquire the capacities for playing satisfying and responsible role in family life. 8. To acquire the knowledge, habits and attitudes that promote personal and public health, both physical and mental. 9. To acquire the ability and the desire to express himself/herself creatively in one or more of the arts, and to appreciate the aesthetic expressions of other people. 10. To acquire an understanding of ethical principles and values and the ability to apply them to his/her own life. 11. To develop an understanding of his/her own worth, abilities, potentialities, and limitations. 12. To learn to enjoy the process of learning and to acquire the skills necessary for a lifetime of continuous learning and adaptation to change.

4 COURSE DESCRIPTION Business Management/Business Ethics The course, which will be broken up on a semester basis, is designed to give the student an understanding of the characteristics, the organization, and the operation of a business. It covers the major phases of business activity which typically form the basis for the internal organization of the majority of business firms. The second semester of the course will be devoted to the personal qualities that contribute to one's success in the business world. The course is designed to help students develop personal initiative, responsibility, and confidence. Students will learn to work with others, demonstrating acceptable work behaviors; and they will acquire a new sense of responsibility through an awareness of the importance of their roles in the overall operations of the employing organization. Business Management Minimum Proficiencies Students will be able to: 1. Explain the nature of business and the problems affecting businesses. 2. Explain how our economic environment affects business. 3. List the advantages and disadvantages of proprietorships. 4. List the advantages and disadvantages of partnerships. 5. List the advantages and disadvantages of corporations. 6. List the activities of marketing and its importance and role in the economy. Business Ethics Minimum Proficiencies Students will be able to: 1. Explain the process of personality development. 2. Explain the importance of attitudes, habits, and ethics that will enhance employability. 3. Discuss the importance of getting along with others. 4. Discuss the effects of motivation on your work. 5. Explain constructive ways of coping with conflict. 6. Explain how to cope with stress. 7. Explain the effects of discrimination especially in regard to one's work place. 8. Explain the part that good communication plays in the work place.

5 COURSE OBJECTIVES Business Management Objectives 1. Students will be able to identify the nature of a business. 2. Students will be able to describe the effect of international trade on American business. 3. Students will be able to explain the role of small business and some of the problems they face. 4. Students will be able to explain the changing nature of the population of the United States. 5. Students will be able to discuss the three major social problems that affect business. 6. Students will be able to explain how energy and pollution problems affect business. 7. Students will be able to explain how business responds to social problems. 8. Students will be able to explain the importance of import-export trade barriers. 9. Students will be able to explain how economic growth can be promoted and controlled. 10. Students will be able to compare capitalism, socialism and communism. 11. Students will be able to explain how federal laws help control and promote competition. 12. Students will be able to explain how patents, copyrights, and trademarks are beneficial to business. 13. Students will be able to describe at least three methods used by state and local governments to regulate business. 14. Students will be able to explain the responsibilities of owning your own business. 15. Students will be able to list advantages and disadvantages of proprietorships and partnerships. 16. Students will be able to explain the basic features of a corporation. 17. Students will be able to explain how a corporation is formed and organized. 18. Students will be able to discuss the importance of marketing and its role in the economy. l9. Students will be able to explain the four elements of marketing. 20. Students will be able to explain the channels of distributing products from the producer to consumers. 21. Students will be able to identify two major methods of promotion and four other promotional methods used by businesses.

Students will be able to explain how to be a "team player" in their place of employment. 11. Students will become familiar with the basic management styles and which they prefer. 12. Students will be able to describe the four kinds of conflict. 13. Students will be able to explain how to cope with conflict. 14. Students will be able to describe symptoms of stress. 15. Students will be able to describe the correct way of dealing with stress. 16. Students will be able to describe prejudice and stereotyping. 17. Students will be able to explain the various kinds of discrimination. 18. Students will be able to describe correct ways of dealing with discrimination. 19. Students will be able to establish good communication channels. 20. Students will be able to explain the value of a good reputation and honesty in their place of employment. 21. Students will be able to explain how they can move ahead in their careers.
