DePaul University School of Accountancy Accounting 545 Online - Course Syllabus - Fall Quarter, 2013 Professor: Elizabeth A. Murphy, PhD, MBA, CPA Office Location: Room 6073 DePaul Center Address: [email protected] (see availability below) Office Phone #: (312) Availability: Please note that I will do my best to respond to all questions posted on the D2L discussion boards within 24 hours. I have subscribed to all discussion boards so I will receive a notice immediately when there are postings. Discussion boards should be used for all technical accounting questions so all students can see all questions and responses. ALL students can also respond to questions on the D2L discussion boards. If I see anything that needs correcting on the D2L discussion boards, I will follow up. REQUIRED TEXT & MATERIALS: 2 options are shown below; either option 1 or option 2 is fine. 1. Advanced Financial Accounting (10th edition), by Theodore E. Christensen, David M. Cottrell, & Richard E. Baker; McGraw-Hill Irwin, 2014 (hard copy, loose leaf or ebook are all ok; loose leaf is not bought back by bookstore) AND Connect Accounting (for above textbook): 2- Semester online Access Card for Advanced Financial Accounting, published by McGraw-Hill (for doing homework online). (Connect Accounting ONLY has the online homework, not the ebook. See below for Connect PLUS Accounting which includes BOTH the online homework AND the ebook.) OR 2. Connect PLUS Accounting (for above textbook): The PLUS version of Connect or Connect PLUS includes BOTH the online homework AND an ebook. Thus, students are not required to have a hard copy of the text; an ebook is OK; however, see NOTE below. NOTE: Students may purchase just the Connect Plus Accounting, which provides an e-book (instead of purchasing a hard copy of the text along with the Connect Plus access card); however, students are expected to have access to the e-book during class, especially when reviewing homework. If students choose the e-book option and do not have a computer to bring to class that allows internet access to the e-book, they are expected to print out the assigned homework pages from the textbook so that they know what information is given in a problem while it is being reviewed in class. ISBN s: Hard Copy of Text: Looseleaf Copy of Text: Connect: Connect Plus: Hard Copy of Text AND Connect Plus: Link to register for Connect and provide access to online homework for our ACC 545 class: (YOU WILL ALSO NEED YOUR PURCHASED CONNECT ACCESS CARD CODE TO REGISTER AT THE LINK BELOW FOR YOUR CLASS SECTION.) This most up-to-date document is available on D2L. All students enrolled in ACC & MIS courses must be aware of the contents and implications of this document. It is also available on the School of ACC & MIS website at: Online Requirements and Desire2Learn and Connect (McGraw Hill online homework system) This is an online course. You will need at minimum: Frequent access to a computer (Microsoft Windows of Mac OS X) that connects to the Internet. A working account that you check regularly (and that is updated in Campus Connection) Access to a software suite such as Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Power Point). If you do not have access to Office, you can download a free, open source alternative such as Open Office ( that will give you the same basic functionality. Administrator access to a computer to install software (for the online exams). A webcam (for the online exams). The ability to view video files, either in a streaming (Flash) or downloadable (QuickTime, itunes, 3GP) format. This course will use Desire2Learn ( This web-based site will contain the course syllabus, lecture notes, and discussion boards and other resources. You are automatically enrolled in Desire2Learn when you enroll in the course. I will use Desire2Learn extensively to post material for you and for all of us to communicate with each other. Students in ACC 545 are also required to use the McGraw Hill Connect homework system to work homework assignments. Students must pay for Connect Access before they can access the customized homework material online. (See previous page for link to customized course; you get the other required Access Code when you pay for the Connect system.) DISCUSSION BOARDS Students are required to use the discussion board to post questions and request help from each other and the instructor. Even though students are not specifically graded for their use of discussion boards (other than their required introductions), much learning occurs on discussion boards. ALL technical accounting questions must be relayed to the instructor via use of discussion boards, NOT , so that all students can benefit from the questions & responses.
ACC 545 Course Syllabus Page 3 Online Examinations This course uses Software Secure s Remote Proctor Now to ensure the integrity of online exams. Online examinations will not be available to students unless the Remote Proctor Now system is used. Remote Proctor Now works with a webcamera and microphone either built-in or attached to the computer. These devices identify the student and capture video and audio throughout the exam and upload it to SSI s secure servers. This video will be used for the purpose of establishing if any suspicious activity occurred during the test. There is a student demo available here: It is recommended that you view this video. All exam videos can/will be reviewed by the course faculty and the Director of Online Learning. If cheating is confirmed, the student will be referred to the Policy on Academic Dishonesty in the Student Handbook. There is a fee to use Remote Proctor Now. This will be $15 per proctored exam. You will have an opportunity complete a test (practice) online exam at no charge. There are very detailed instructions about Remote Proctor on D2L. Test Environment Requirements The online testing environment should mimic the in class testing environment, and must conform to the following: A quiet, secure, fully lighted room for the examination No other people in the room. No communicating with anyone; with the exception of contact with a faculty member or support in an emergency. This includes the prohibition of cell phone use for any purpose. No leaving the room Nothing except computer and external cameras on the desktop or tabletop - removal of all books, papers, notebooks, or other materials, unless specifically permitted in written guidelines for a particular examination. External cameras, when possible, should be placed on the lid of the laptop or where it will have a constant, uninterrupted view of the test taker. No writing visible on desk or on walls No music playing No other computers running in the exam room No headphones or ear buds allowed Have the web-cam correctly situated: Web-cam must be focused on individual taking exam at all times. Nothing covering the lens of the camera at any time during the exam. Lighting must be daylight quality and overhead is preferred if at all possible. If overhead is not possible, the source should not be behind the student. EXAMINATIONS The midterm and final exams will consist of multiple choice questions and/or multi-part problems involving computations and/or short essays. The professor's objective when testing is to focus on material emphasized and discussed in class materials, included in handouts, included in consolidations projects, and/or included in homework assignments. The professor reserves the right to assign small projects that can serve as substitutes for either a problem or the short essays on the exams; these projects would focus on either written or oral communication skills. The midterm exam will cover only consolidations material; the final exam covers the rest of the material on the course syllabus. MAKE-UP EXAM POLICY Midterm: No make-up will be offered. Anyone with a valid excuse*(see explanation on next page) who gets permission from the professor BEFORE the scheduled time for the midterm exam will take a COMPREHENSIVE final exam which will represent the points in the course assigned to both the midterm and final exam. This comprehensive exam will NOT be curved and will require considerably more exam-taking time in order to provide adequate coverage of the midterm material. Final: Anyone with a valid excuse who gets permission* (see explanation on next page) from the professor BEFORE the final exam AND WHO IS ALSO PASSING THE COURSE BASED ON GRADES TO DATE will receive a grade of "Incomplete" and take a make-up final exam at the time scheduled by the College of Business. This is usually the second or third week of the following quarter. Given the extra time available for preparation, fairness dictates that the make-up final exam be SIGNIFICANTLY more difficult than the regularly scheduled final exam. A grade of Incomplete is given only to individuals who cannot take the final examination at its scheduled time due to an unforeseen difficulty such as an accident, illness, or death in the family. Incompletes are not given to individuals who fall behind in their assignments and class attendance due to work or other reasons. In the latter case, a withdrawal is the appropriate action.
ACC 545 Course Syllabus Page 4 * All requests to take exams at times other than those scheduled for their class must be discussed with the professor prior to taking the exam. That discussion must be followed up with an request being sent to the professor; the request for the exam change and the reason for the request must be included in the . The request will be followed by an confirmation from the professor. All of these steps must be completed for a make-up exam to be considered approved, and all of these steps must be completed PRIOR to the scheduled final exam date. COURSE DESCRIPTION AND OBJECTIVES The course extends the coverage of financial accounting topics beyond the intermediate level. ACC 545 in its online version is not a self-paced course, and requires a substantial time commitment each week throughout the quarter. Experience in the study of Accountancy has shown that to successfully master the course content, the student must read each chapter multiple times. In addition, students learn by doing. Thus, emphasis is placed on problem-solving with assigned homework. The best preparation for exams is for students to be able to complete homework without referencing any resources (text, handouts, etc.) because that is what will occur with the exams. Thus, while being able to reference materials will speed up getting homework assignments done on a timely basis, that approach is not the optimal approach for exam preparation. By the time you take the midterm exam, you need to be able to work the assignments without referencing any resources. See attached course outline for a detailed list of the content. The course objectives may be summarized as follows: 1) provide students with technical mastery of relevant standards governing financial accounting practice; 2) provide students with an introduction to state & local government accounting and not-for-profit accounting; 3) expose students to the theoretically underpinnings of current standards, as well as exposure to alternatives to current standards; 4) enhance students' understanding of financial statements prepared in accordance with current standards; 5) consistent with the above objectives, provide students with the necessary background to successfully complete the requirements to become a Certified Public Accountant; 6) provide practice in the use of the personal computer in solving selected advanced financial accounting problems. COURSE PREREQUISITES Students must have successfully completed ACC 543. ACCOMMODATION STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES Students who feel they may need an accommodation based on the impact of a disability should contact me privately to discuss their specific needs. All discussions will remain confidential. To ensure that you receive the most appropriate reasonable accommodation based on your needs, contact me as early as possible in the quarter (preferably within the first week of class), and make sure that you have contacted: The Center for Students with Disabilities (CSD) at +1 (773) , Student Center #370. ADDITIONAL ACCOMMODATIONS This course includes instructional content delivered via audio and video. If you have any concerns about your ability to access and/or understand this material in its default format, please notify me within the first week of the course so accommodations can be made. ASSISTANCE WITH WRITING THE WRITING CENTER Consider contacting or visiting the Writing Center to discuss your assignments for this course or any others. You may schedule appointments (30 or 50 minutes) on an as-needed or weekly basis, scheduling up to 3 hours worth of appointments per week. Online services include Feedback-by- and IM conferencing (with or without a webcam). All writing center services are free. Writing Center tutors are specially selected and trained graduate and undergraduate students who can help you at almost any stage of your writing. They will not do your work for you, but they can help you focus and develop your ideas, review your drafts, and polish your writing. They can answer questions about grammar, mechanics, different kinds of writing styles, and documentation formats. They also can answer questions and provide feedback online, through IM/webcam chats and . Obviously, the tutors won t necessarily be familiar with every class or subject, but they are able to provide valuable help from the perspective of an interested and careful reader as well as a serious and experienced student-writer.
ACC 545 Course Syllabus Page 5 Schedule your appointments with enough time to think about and use the feedback you ll receive. Bring your assignment handout and other relevant materials to your appointments. STUDENT EVALUATIONS At the end of this course, you will be provided with the opportunity to evaluate this course. Course evaluations provide valuable feedback that can improve teaching and learning. The greater the level of participation, the more useful the results. Your comments about what works and what doesn t can help faculty build on the elements of the course that are strong and improve those that are weak. Isolated comments from students and instructors peers may also be helpful, but evaluation results based on high response rates may be statistically reliable (believable). As you experience this course and material, think about how your learning is impacted. Your honest opinions about your experience in and commitment to the course and your learning may help improve some components of the course for the next group of students. STUDY AIDS 1. Connect Plus allows the opportunity to give students assistance while working homework assignments. 2. The assigned homework that is graded for attempt (need score of 70% to get full credit) is ALSO set up as practice homework after the due date so that students can re-work the assignments online after the due date and before the exams. These practice problems are easily identified as Copy of on Connect. 3. Online textbook information center: Provided for each chapter: (also provided on Connect system) Excel Templates for working homework Check Figures for homework Power Point slides Excel files to accompany slides 4. Consolidations projects and solutions from prior quarter are provided on D2L GRADING POLICY There will be 2 exams in the course: a midterm exam (40%) and a final exam (40%). All students will also be required to post an introduction of themselves on a D2L discussion board by the end of the first week of class. (DEADLINE IS MON., 9/16/13 AT NOON.) There will also be 2 types of homework assignments that MUST be done using the Connect Plus Accounting online resource: 1. Homework assigned where students will be given access to online help (Weighted 10% of course grade) a. Students must complete homework by the homework deadline b. Students who get at least a Connect score of 70% will be assigned a grade of 100%, which represents a valid attempt at working the homework problem; students scoring less than 70% will be given a score of 0%. 2. Consolidations homework, where NO ONLINE HELP is provided, will be graded using the Connect system score. (Weighted 10% of course grade for 5 problems worth 2% each) Summary of Grading: Percent of Component Course Grade Student Introduction on D2L Discussion Board & Connect Homework with Online Help Provided* 10% Selected Consolidations Assignments on Connect with NO Online Help Provided* 10% Midterm Exam 40% Final Exam 40% Total 100% *Assignments MUST be completed using online McGraw-Hill Connect Accounting system.

The DePaul Student Handbook details the facets and ramifications of academic integrity violations, but you should be especially aware of the policies on cheating and plagiarism. Cheating is any action that violates University norms or an instructor s guidelines for the preparation and submission of assignments. Such actions may include using or providing unauthorized assistance or materials on course assignments, or possessing unauthorized materials during an examination. Plagiarism involves the representation of another s work as your own, for example: (a) submitting as one s own any material that is copied from published or unpublished sources such as the Internet, print, computer files, audio disks, video programs or musical scores without proper acknowledgement that it is someone else s; (b) paraphrasing another s views, opinions or insights without proper acknowledgement or copying of any source in whole or in part with only minor changes in wording or syntax even with acknowledgement; (c) submitting as one s own work a report, examination, paper, computer file, lab report or other assignment which has been prepared by someone else. If you are unsure about what constitutes unauthorized help on an exam or assignment, or what information requires citation and/or attribution, please ask your instructor. Work done for this course must adhere to the University Academic Integrity Policy, which you can review in the Student Handbook or by visiting: Academic dishonesty will result in a failing grade for the entire course. PLEASE NOTE: Use of cell phones or other electronic communication devices during any quiz or exam is strictly prohibited. All academic integrity issues will immediately be referred to the Academic Integrity Board for disciplinary action.
ACC 545 Course Syllabus Page 7 STRATEGY FOR HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS AND WHEN THEY ARE DUE ON CONNECT: It is important to stay up to date with any accounting course. However, with consolidations, you must understand consolidation accounting at the acquisition date in order to understand consolidation accounting at the first year end after the acquisition date. You also need to understand a 100% acquisition in order to understand an acquisition of less than 100% of a target company. Finally, you need to understand all of these consolidation approaches to fully understand intercompany transactions. I have structured the consolidations homework into two tiers to help address the need for this cumulative learning: The assignments, where students are required to get a grade of 70% on Connect to get full credit for grading purposes, are intended to be learning exercises for students; students are given feedback while working these assignments online and can take them more than once. (The final grade earned prior to the due date is what is considered for grading, and students can view their own grades on the Connect system so they know where they stand.) These learning assignments are due at the end of the week when the students should have read the text and viewed the online videos and handouts. The assignments where the score earned on Connect counts and feedback is NOT provided while working the assignments online are intended to simulate an exam. Ideally, you should be able to work these assignments without using any resources; the online resources will not be available, and you should avoid using your text and notes (even though that is not a formal requirement. These assignments are due within 5 days of the learning homework due dates mentioned above. However, you are welcome to do these assignments early (right after you ve finished doing the learning assignments. For the topics other than consolidations after the midterm, there will only be one set of homework for each topic (where students must earn 70% on the homework to get full credit. On the next two pages, I have outlined the course content and due dates. On the last two pages of this syllabus, I have put the course deadlines into a calendar for your use.
