With our 600 Euros additional service, you can utilize our expert assistance. Who can sign- up? All athletes from 16 to 20 years old. Which sports are we talking about? Swimming (Men s and Women s), Tennis (M & W), Volleyball (M & W), Basketball (M & W), Track and Field (M & W), Grass Hockey (W only), American Football (M only), Soccer (M & W), Water polo (M & W), Bowling (W only), Fencing (M & W), Gymnastics (M & W), Ice Hockey (M & W), Mixed Rifle (M & W), Skiing (M & W), Fencing (M only), Baseball (M only), Golf (M & W), Lacrosse (M & W), Rowing (M & W), Softball (F only). What is the ideal time to start working with LZ Sport? The earlier the better because teams fill up fast and coaches start recruiting 1 and a half to 2 years in advance, even internationally. THE BEST IS TO START IN THE 11 TH GRADE. LIVING IN THE USA: Are we safe inside American universities? YES! Generally, you live in a campus with other students who often time come from various countries around the world. What is a campus? This is the place where everything takes place. A campus is made of student buildings with classrooms, administrative offices, a library, athletic infrastructures (pool, gyms, sports courts, sports fields ) sometimes a health center but also residential buildings where students live. Living on campus inside the student dorms is often very enjoyable because of the positive atmosphere and the mix of cultures. What does the day of a student- athlete on scholarship look like? In the morning you could have class from 9 a.m. to 1p.m., you then eat lunch and rest a little till let s say 3 p.m. Practice from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. and after you might have some time to study and socialize. If the coach decides so you could practice from 6 a.m. also! How is the relationship with the professors? Very cordial and closer than in Europe, where a certain distance between student and professor exists. Professors are well paid and their salary actually depends on regular student ratings. They make sure to assist students and to be available for them through open doors or office hours. How many hours of class do I have per week? Between 15 and 18 hours a week, so 3 to 4 hours a day. 3
How much time do I spend practicing each day? Around 3 hours. Some coaches can require 5 hours of practice during training periods; this really depends on your coach. How is the atmosphere on campus? Excellent! Imagine you live in the same place with thousands of students between 18 and 25 years old coming from all the continents of the world for the same reason: pursue their studies but also HAVE FUN! Will I have the opportunity to visit the rest of the United States? Of course! You will probably have some American players on your team, they might invite you to the family house for holidays or you might travel around the US with some friends. Also, you will get the opportunity to visit many other American cities when you will travel with your team to play the away games. STUDIES AND DIPLOMAS: What can I study in the United States? Anything that is available at the university you attend. You can therefore usually study business, history, psychology, any field in science engineering languages, design, etc. Should I immediately pick my major (my diploma)? NO. You have around 2 years to specialize and choose your major. At the beginning of your coursework you take general education classes. This gives you time and helps you decide on your field of study. I am an average student. Will it be hard for me to obtain a university diploma? Not necessarily. If you are serious, you should be able to graduate. Usually the level of knowledge coming out of high- school outside is higher than in the USA, therefore international students often have an advantage compared to the American students. How long do the studies last in America? Approximately 4 years for a Bachelor degree (main American diploma). After the Bachelor, you can pursue a Masters degree which lasts between 1 to 2 years. Is the bachelor diploma recognized outside of the United State? YES OF COURSE! Generally, it transfers out to 3 years of university depending on the country. Is the Bachelor diploma recognized in the workplace? This diploma is recognized worldwide and a big majority of bachelor students find work fairly easily with this diploma. What happens if I already started my university or college career and I want to attend an American university? This is not a problem. It is possible to transfer the classes (credits) you took in your home country or start over as a 1 st year student. What is the difference between a college and a university? Junior colleges are institutions you can attend for 2 years; universities are attended for 4 years. Another difference exists: there are 4 year colleges and 4 year universities. Colleges give out bachelor and master diplomas, where universities give out bachelor, master and doctorate diplomas. This is not an indication of academic quality, for example Boston College 4
and Dartmouth College are very popular for their academic excellence and are 4 year Colleges. Should I buy insurance before leaving for the USA? YES! You will buy the university s international student insurance offered by the school you will attend. This insurance costs from $500 to $1200 per year depending on the university. SPORT What is the minimum sport s level required to obtain an athletic scholarship? An average/solid club level. Should I be a national team player or a professional athlete? NO, absolutely not! You must be a decent junior with a competing club. Could I pursue a professional career after college? Of course! The American collegiate league is the level right under the professional sports league in America. The best collegiate athletes regularly sign professional contracts after they graduation. Some examples: John Isner (Tennis, University of Georgia), Michael Jordan (Basketball, University of North Carolina) How are the sports conditions in large NCAA universities? FANTASTIC! The team is often composed of not only a head coach but of 2 assistant coaches, a trainer (that follows the team on every practice and game) and team doctor. Generally, you go on trips by plane or bus (very comfortable ones); the team often sleeps in very good hotels. Players receive meal money on each trip. Some big universities have football people stadiums, Basketball arenas that can welcome 7000 to spectators, weight lifting rooms and gyms dedicated to student- athletes THE INFRASTRUCTURES ARE HIGH QUALITY AND AMAZING! How does the competition system work? You represent your university in competitions or games against other universities. The universities are regrouped geographically in conferences ; they play one against the others during the season. At the end, the best universities play at the NCAA final Tournament which is the most important competition of the year. Wining an NCAA American title is the dream of every American student- athlete. What is the equipment and apparel received at the university? If you attend a big university (generally NCAA institutions with student and more), you will receive a lot of gear: shoes, sweats, cleats, tennis rackets and whatever else you need. Universities often have apparel sponsorships (Adidas, Nike, Russell ). If you attend a smaller university, equipment might be more modest, depending on the team s budget. How do Americans practice? They physically work very hard. Practices are often intense. Can I ask my coaches to work individually on top of the team practices? Yes, of course! Coaches love athletes that want more and are motivated to improve their game. 5
How many foreigners per team are there? There are no limits or quotas! Your entire team can be made of foreigners. Coaches are only interested in the sports level of the player; if that means recruiting only internationally that is what they will do! In tennis, for example, it is common to have entire teams made of foreigners (a minimum of 6 players constitute a team and they can all be foreigners). ATHLETIC SCHOLARSHIPS Why do athletic scholarships exist and why do universities invest so much money in sports? Collegiate sports are very important when talking about a university s image. Sports represent a big tradition as well. Universities give out scholarships to athletes and those in return compete for the school in the NCAA championship. What is a full scholarship? A full scholarship covers the entire cost of education, food, housing and books for one academic year. What is a partial scholarship? A partial scholarship only covers a portion of all the costs previously mentioned. For example, if the total cost to attend a university is $ dollars per year (education costs, food, housing and books) and you receive an 80% scholarship, therefore $ dollars, you will have to cover the remaining $6 000 dollars. Am I allowed to work on campus? Yes, you can work on campus part- time. During the school year, you can usually make $500 dollars a month; during the summer, you can earn up to $2 000 dollars a month. If you are hard- working, you can work and finance yourself all year long without asking your parents for money. What kinds of student jobs exist? There are jobs you can do at the library, the cafeteria, the gym; give private sports lessons 80% of students have a campus job. You can do the same! What criteria do coaches use when giving a scholarship to an athlete? Exclusively your sports level. They search for athletes that can improve the level of their team. What are the sports for which we can obtain full athletic scholarships? One can receive a full athletic scholarship for every sport. For men s basketball, American football and baseball full scholarships are given, for other men s sports it is usually partial scholarships. How about women s sports? Women almost always obtain full athletic scholarships. For how long is my athletic scholarship valid and is it possible to lose it? You must renew your athletic scholarship each year (sign the athletic scholarship agreement). The coach can decide to take away your scholarship but it is very rare. You can lose your scholarship if you do not respect the university or team rules. You can receive an athletic scholarship for as much as 4 years. 6
THE VIDEO Can I lose my scholarship in case of an injury? Absolutely not! In the case of an injury, you keep your scholarship, it is strictly forbidden to take away a scholarship because of an injury. For example, if you get badly injured during your junior year (3rd year) and you cannot participate anymore that year you will still receive your scholarship for the remainder of the 3rd year and the entire 4 th if you still cannot play or practice at that moment. Is the video important? Very much so! This is the only way that American coaches can analyze your sports abilities and level. Should I video tape my practices or my official games? It is better to video tape official games but there are not precise rules. For volleyball, basketball and soccer 4 official games are ideal. A highlight video needs to be made, which is a mixture of your best moments. You need to show as much footage as possible. A volleyball practice could be very interesting if made correctly; a tennis practice of 2 hours is also recommended with a mixture of drills and game points (1 or 2 sets). For which sports is a video needed? For pretty much every sport. Though it is recommended for track & field and swimming sometimes it is not mandatory because results and times speak for themselves. For more in depth examples and videos from our previous clients please visit our LZ Videos Channel: SAT, ACT, TOEFL EXAMS What exams do I need to take in order to be admitted into an American university? The SAT or ACT and the TOEFL. What is the required level of English I need to have? An average high- school level will do in order to start preparing for these exams. If you are serious in the preparation, you can pass these exams in a few months. If your English level is very high you could maybe pass them right away or in less than a few months. Where do I take these exams and how much do they cost? There are exam centers in every country, generally in all big cities. The SAT costs $81 dollars and the TOEFL costs between $180 and $240 dollars depending on the country. How many times can I take these exams? As many times as you want. Your best score is the one the universities will retain. How important are these exams to obtain a scholarship? After your athletic level, passing your exams is the most important thing to go to the United States. For example, if you are offered a full athletic scholarship but your exam scores are not high enough (depending on the university these criteria can change) you will not be able to confirm your scholarship and therefore be admitted into the university. 7
How can I prepare for these exams? Preparing with specialized professors for these exams is the best way. You need to start preparing for these exams as early as possible and with teachers that are specialized in SAT and TOEFL exams. You can contact us for more information on professors. We can recommend teachers that can prepare you via SKYPE. That way you can fit your classes into your busy schedule more easily. NCAA, NAIA, NJCAA What is the NCAA National Collegiate Athletic Association? This organization exists since 1952; it regulates the American collegiate sports league. The NCAA is made of 3 divisions (NCAA 1, NCAA 2, and NCAA 3) and year institutions. What is the NAIA- National Athletic Intercollegiate Association? This organization is also an American collegiate sports league (approximately 300 universities, all 4- year institutions). What is NJCAA - National Junior College Athletic Association? This organization regulates the junior colleges sports championship (JUCCOs are 2- year institutions). What is needed to attend a JUCCO? And what do I do after I obtain a diploma from a JUCCO? You must graduate from high- school and obtain a high- school diploma. Then, you must pass the TOEFL (no SAT is required for JUCCOs). When you graduate from a JUCCO and obtain your associate degree you can transfer to a 4- year university or college and therefore play and obtain an athletic scholarship for an additional 2 years in the NCAA or the NAIA. F1 STUDENT VISA When do I apply for my student visa? You must obtain a scholarship first. Then, you must be officially admitted into the university. Only after, will you receive from your university the i20 which is the most important document in receiving your student visa. 8
