1 2009 Summer Professional Development Opportunities for Parkway Secondary Communication Arts Teachers Grades 6-8: Introduction to Reading Workshop using Understanding by Design Gwen Unell, Susan Doering Date: June 4 MS Communication Arts teachers new to reading workshop This workshop conducted by literacy coaches Gwen Unell and Susan Doering provides an orientation to the workshop approach to middle school reading instruction through the lens of Understanding by Design. Along with an overview of the way UbD integrates with workshop structure, it addresses management and assessment issues, units of study in the middle school curriculum, differentiation, and the integration technology and available resources. Grades 6 8: Introduction to Writing Workshop using Understanding by Design Susan Doering, Gwen Unell Date: June 5 MS Communication Arst teachers new to writing workshop This workshop conducted by literacy coaches Susan Doering and Gwen Unell provides an orientation to the workshop approach to middle school writing instruction through the lens of Understanding by design. Participants will learn about the guiding principles of understanding by design, writing workshop, ways to integrate online writing, and immerse themselves in the introductory unit of study: Developing a Community of Writers. Grades 6 12: Best Practices in Adolescent Literacy using Understanding by Design Rebecca Langrall, Deborah Difani Date: June 8 MS and HS Communication Arts teachers 1

2 Based on the desired results we have for students reading, this workshop will address: diagnosis of reading needs using the Jerry Johns Basic Reading Inventory (copies of which are now available in MS and HS professional libraries), management of literature circles to raise the level of analytical thinking, how to strengthen SSR, effective use of the Lexile data, and ways to audit reading assessments in order to increase their DOK. Grades 6 12: Integrating Best Practices in Vocabulary Instruction using Backward Planning Pam Rademeyer, Rebecca Langrall Date: June 9 MS and HS Communication Arts teachers In this workshop teachers will explore how to integrate the Word Roots program adopted last year at the middle school into backward planning using the list of most frequently found prefixes, suffixes, and roots. HS and MS teachers should find transfer value in the examination of word attack skills as they align with the guiding principles of UbD and the most commonly encountered prefixes, suffixes, and roots. Additional techniques that work well for ESL students and students with IEPs will be modeled, in addition to how to integrate high frequency academic vocabulary into assessment prompts using the EDL vocabulary resource. MS Literacy Coach Training Rebecca Langrall Dates: June 10, 11, and 12 ISC, Room 1301 MS Literacy Coaches Coaches will be working with Nancy Love's USING DATA TO IMPROVE LEARNING FOR ALL and THE DATA COACH'S GUIDE TO IMPROVING LEARNING FOR ALL to support their leadership of teams using data to inform instruction. Coaches will also receive training in student-based instructional supervision techniques and how to coach for the development of pedagogical content knowledge. SIPPS Training for MS Reading Specialists Developmental Studies Center Trainer, Ann Leon (search under Rebecca Langrall) Date: June 15 MS Reading Specialists (Teachers of Acceleration 1) 2

3 MS Reading Specialists will receive a comprehensive overview of the new SIPPS PLUS and SIPPS CHALLENGE curricula, including an orientation to materials, lesson structure, assessment, and record keeping. Participants will engage in model lessons and have an opportunity to practice selected lesson segments. Grades 6 12: Shared Inquiry: Great Books Developers from the Chicago-based Great Books Organization Dates: June 16 June 17 8:30 3:00 PM Participants All teachers interested in developing inquiry-based discussion skills This workshop provides concrete, step-by-step instruction in how to use Shared Inquiry discussion and interpretive activities through high quality literature for middle and high school students. In this two-day workshop you will learn: Questioning strategies that keep discussions lively and focused, encourage students to read for meaning and think critically How to use follow-up questions to help students develop their own ideas for further thinking and writing Techniques to involve higher, average, and lower performing students Before and after reading activities that reinforce good reading and discussion The search for meaning in a story or piece of nonfiction becomes an exciting investigation shared by everyone, including the adult leader. Shared Inquiry training has a long and distinguished history as a developer of critical reading and thinking in children, teens, and adults. For more information about the Great Books Foundation, please visit: Grades 6 8: Common Assessment Writing for Middle School Communication Arts Rebecca Langrall, MS Literacy Coaches Dates: June 18 June 19 8:00 PM 3:00 PM MS teachers The purpose of this workshop is to tune the six common assessments generated this past year for reading fiction and non-fiction and to develop three more assessments for each grade level in the area of word attack skills based on targeted word roots (prefixes, suffixes, and stems) for each grade level. Grades 6 12: CA Technology Demo Teacher Training Bill Bass, Melissa Pomerantz, Rebecca Langrall Dates: July 8, 9, and 10 at ISC, Room HS teachers: Melissa Pomeranz - NH, Brigid Dolan - SH, Jason Lovera 3

4 CH, and Carolyn Dixon WH and 5 MS Teachers: Amy Harness CM, Cory Milles NEM, Jenny Bartels SM, Jill Loyet SWM, and Cecilia Ryon WM. This workshop is designed to allow tech demo teachers a chance to explore the following: Implications of their results from the LoTi self-evaluation survey for becoming a Level 4B teacher and beyond; new tools such as ALICE -- software that allows students to learn programming while engaging in digital story-telling; implications of the NCTE's 21st C. Framework for Curriculum and Assessment and ISTE's REINVENTING PROJECT- BASED LEARNING: YOUR FIELD GUIDE TO REAL-WORLD PROJECTS IN THE DIGITAL AGE; generate plans for sharing insights from the Tech Demo project with other teachers possibly through Parkway Digital; and augment lessons on the OCG that integrate technology in motivating ways. Grades 6 12: Introduction to Moodle Bill Bass, Technology Integration Specialist and former HS English teacher Dates: July TBA Time 8-3 Participants Secondary Comm Arts teachers interested in adding a web component to their classes Description Teachers will receive a Moodle account, become familiar with the features of this courseware and begin to load content to support projected class information and activities for the coming school year. Grade 9 Teachers: Freshman Literacy Project Training Rebecca Langrall Dates: July 20, 21, 22, and 23 ISC, Room teachers (2 from each CH, NH, and WH, and SH) TEACHING We will review common assessments and common assessment data; explore cooperative learning structures; implications for our work of the NCTE 21st C. Framework for Curriculum and Assessment, Kelly Gallagher's ADOLESCENT WRITERS and READICIDE, Lanier and Lenski's DEVELOPING AN INDEPENDENT READING PROGRAM, and Marilyn French's I WON'T READ AND YOU CAN'T MAKE ME; and learn how to administer the Jerry John's BASIC READING INVENTORY. Copies of French, Lanier & Lenski, Reynolds, Gallagher s books, and Kagan's cooperative learning will be sent to participants this spring and should be read /reviewed before we meet. 4

5 Making Meaning Training for MS Reading Specialists Peter Braun, author and Developmental Studies Center Trainer (search under Rebecca Langrall) Date: July 24 MS Reading Specialists (Teachers of Strategies 1 and 2 classes) MS Reading Specialists will receive a comprehensive overview of the new MAKING MEANING curricula for Grades 6-8, including an orientation to materials, lesson structure, assessment, and record keeping. Participants will engage in model lessons and have an opportunity to practice selected lesson segments. Grades 6 12: Gateway Writing Project UMSL-based Gateway Writing Project Developers Dates: August 3, 4, and 5 Returning communication arts teachers of the Year One cohort for GWP and folks who will be filling available openings, as identified by their curriculum and department leaders. If interested, please contact your curriculum or department leader. This is the kickoff training for Year Two with Gateway Writing Project trainers from UMSL. In addition to continuing work on best practices in writing instruction, participants will explore the possibilities of new tools for writing in the 21st century; conduct case study research on particular students; and learn how to engage students in responding both authentically and analytically to literature. New participants will receive a binder of materials. All teachers will participate in four release days throughout the year to continue their learning from the summer training. 5
