These are Introduction to Educational Sciences (Fall semester) and Introduction to the Teaching Profession (spring semester). My students include Turkish and Iraqi students in training to become future high school teachers in their countries. From January 2007 to the present, I have been teaching English for Academic Purposes at Bilkent University (Ankara, Turkey) helping Turkish undergraduate students develop academic English reading, writing, and speaking skills. To facilitate this, I ve designed and implemented content-based curricula utilizing philosophical and social science texts on such themes as human development and creativity, social change, ethics, and science and religion. I also teach sophomore courses in Social and Political Philosophy designed to help students learn to read, critically analyze and respond to classical and modern philosophical texts by such philosophers as Plato, Aristotle, Cicero, Mill, Hobbes, Rousseau, Wollstonecraft and Marx. From September 2003 to May 2006, I worked in the Durham Literacy Council s Teen GED program and Teen Career Academy helping youth who dropped out of high school prepare for the GED high school equivalency tests and explore possible career paths. In 1998, I was the Assistant Coordinator for the Adult English as a Second Language Program at Wake Technical Community College. Supervised and provided on-going support and staff development for seven ESL teachers. From 1995 to 1998, and again in 2002, I taught beginning, intermediate and advanced level English as a Second Language at Alamance Community College, Durham Technical Community College, and Wake Technical Community College, in North Carolina. In 2002, I taught US citizenship classes at Wake Technical Community College to Developed the Work First Learning Modules curriculum that Alamance Community College used to empower welfare recipients to successfully

2 transition into the working world. These modules helped learners clarify values and goals, develop employment and life skills, and strengthen their self-confidence through identifying and overcoming self-defined obstacles. These modules were a successful component of the North Carolina Department of Social Services' Work First Program in Alamance County, North Carolina. Diversity/Anti-bias Training 1992 to 1994 Co-facilitated a community-based diversity and anti-bias education project known as the Institute for the Healing of Racism in Northampton, MA Helped plan and facilitate the First New England Gathering of Institutes for the Healing of Racism bringing together organizers of similar institutes throughout the New England states of the USA to share and learn from each other s experiences in promoting the healing of racism Was trained as a Prejudice Reduction Leader by the National Coalition Building Institute. Research in Education Fall 2009 Completed and successfully defended my dissertation, which examines how education may help to promote the development of critical moral consciousness in adolescents. My research for this dissertation consisted of a qualitative case study of a moral education and community development project in a public high school in the US Under the auspices of Professor George Noblit of the School of Education at UNC-Chapel Hill, I worked with a team of graduate students to design and implement a program evaluation of the Rose Garden Forum at Chapel Hill High School (Chapel Hill, NC), a novel program designed to reduce the academic achievement gap between atrisk and academically successful high school students Under the auspices of Professor Lynda Stone of the School of Education at UNC- Chapel Hill, participated with a research team in a study of the Parent Advisory Council (PAC) of Durham Public Schools. The purpose of the study was to explore participants views regarding parental involvement in school and the possible relationship of these views to their democratic values. Our findings are reported in our unpublished paper, We the Parents: Parental Involvement in Schools and Democratic Values Participated in the Adult ESOL Curriculum Framework Inquiry Project facilitated by the non-profit organization Literacy South (Durham, NC). This action research project, conducted by myself and a group of ESL teachers from Wake Technical Community College (Raleigh, NC), involved reviewing various frameworks for ESOL (ESL) education and researching/analyzing of our own students and classroom experiences. The results were published in the volume Building Together: The Inquiry Writings, for which I contributed one chapter and wrote the introduction. A proposed Adult ESOL Curriculum Framework was developed by the participants as a result and presented to the North Carolina Community College System As a graduate student at the University of Massachusetts, under the auspices of Dr. Sonia Nieto, I conducted an extensive study of the Northampton Public Schools (Northampton, MA) evaluating this school system's efforts to promote educational equity for its increasingly diverse student population between 1987 and The findings and recommendations of this study received considerable publicity in Northampton, MA and

3 provided a basis for public dialogue regarding the progress of Northampton Public Schools. Paper Presentations and Publications Presented my paper Towards a Systems-based Theory of Morality and Aesthetics: Implications for Education at the 30 th Annual Conference of the Association for Moral Education, which took place in Dana Point, CA in November 2004 Presented my paper Towards a Theory of Morality and Aesthetics Adequate for the Twenty-first Century: Some Implications for Curriculum at the 2003 Southeastern Association of Educational Studies Conference in Chapel Hill, NC Contributed and wrote the introduction to Building Together: The Inquiry Writings, published by Literacy South, a non-profit organization that was based in Durham, North Carolina and dedicated to promoting participatory and libratory approaches to literacy education. Cross-cultural Experience I have considerable international experience. Outside of the United States, I have lived in South East Asia ( ), Central America ( ), the Caribbean ( ), Israel ( ) and Turkey (2007 present). I am accustomed to and value working as a team member with people from diverse cultural backgrounds.
